Smoke and Bobbie

Smoke and Bobbie after a 400 yrd race caught this one in a pond. As you can see here they are both real Kill dogs, but on the other hand, although he doesn't look like it in this picture. This was about a 30 pound coon.

I'm wishing I was with you fellas. Running season closed for 7 nights here in Kansas. Start packing the rifle Wednesday night. Appears you had a great time hunting with Ed.

Illinois Hunt Thursday Nov. 10, 2016

!st drop of the night. we turned loose Smoke and Bob. They went in about 200 yrds and struck a good track and moved it in another 200 yrds and treed. Me and Steve walked into the tree. They were treed up a good sized hardwood tree. We found the coon pretty quick. To make a long story short we did this 3 more t imes and looked at 5 coons in 4 trees. We came back to Mr. Ed's house and dropped off Smoke and Bob and picked up Bobby and Bam Bam. We dropped them off at the edge of a corn field They went in a ways and Bobby fell treed and had a coon. We turned them loose again at another spot. They went in and Bam Struck with Bobby close behind and Bam Treed with Bobby backing him. Me and Steve walked in to them. They were treed up a big den tree. We looked, but we could not find anything on the outside. We called it a night.

Illinois Hunt. Friday Nov. 11

Tonight we started out hunting Smoke, Bobby and Bam. We turned them up a woodland Hollow and they went in about 350 yrds and struck. Smoke and Bobby went left and Bam went Right. Bam got in another 150 yrds and treed and really sounded good. Smoke and Bobby ran theirs another 200 yrds and crossed an open field and caught him in a pond and the fight was on. The coon was so big that they couldn't do anything with him. He weighed about 30 pounds. He went up a tree at the edge of the pond one time and I thought he was safe, at least I thought the dogs were safe, nothing doing he turned around and came back down the tree and joined the fight again. We finally had to shoot the coon to get the dogs and I think they were sure thankful for the help. I took Smoke and Bobby back to the truck and Steve and Kaleb went to Bam. He was still treeing hard and haden't paid the coon fight any attention. I will stop my Illinois Hunt stories here and let Steve tell some, as I know he has a lot to tell. Don't pay any attention
to what he says about me, because he just got mad cause the Coyotes liked to have got him.LOL. I would just like to say that I truly enjoyed these hunts and the visit to Mr. Ed's. Mr. Ed and Mrs. Mary treated us like Royalty and Mrs. Mary is such a great cook. When you set down to her table, you don't have to worry about what she is cooking, You know its going to be good. I also enjoyed meeting their grand son and grand daughter, These were two remarkable young people. I guess Steve is the toughest guy I have ever been around as he was almost down in his back with that Sciatic Nerve and he went all the way To Illinois and hunted those hills and hollows every night and never gave up. I have had that same problem before and its the most pain I have ever had. I sure enjoyed the trip.

The picture above of the dog monument was a tombstone on a grave. I'm not real sure if it was a coondog or not. It looked like a Black and Tan. I thought that the people that did this for him must have known that he really loved his dog. I wouldn't mind having something like that on mine one of these days.

Dennis I sure wish you could have been there, We had a lot of fun.

Sheba 11 and Gin 11

Took these two out for a short run tonight. They went in about 150 yrds and struck a pretty good track, Rolled it out of there another 150 yrds and Sheba locked up treed with little Gin right behind her. Both these females have good mouths and they were really telling it. I walked in to them and they were tree up a large oak that grew up next to a large pine with limbs that went into each other. I would have sure liked to have gotten this one out on Gin, but he had crossed over into the pine and it was too thick in there to see anything in the pine. It would do gin good to get one out on her as she has not had one on her out in the woods yet. Scott she is a chip off the ole block on Tramp and Gin

Mr. Jack as always it was a pleasure to have you here. I have always enjoyed hunting with you and talking dogs. As they say we have a lot of history between us. I have told you in the past how good the smoke dog looked and he didn't disappoint this trip. Please come back soon! Ed

Sheba And Gin

Took these two out for a short round tonight. I took Gin out with Smoke last night and they got on an ole cold track.
Gin worked the track good, but didn't tree much on the cold tree. I wanted to get her on a good hot track tonight, so I took her and Sheba to a bucket feeder tonight and as luck would have it they hit a hot track off of it. It didn't run as far as I would have liked, but she did a good job. When she gets right she is going to be like her ole dad on these tracks as she can really move.

The pleasure was all mine Mr. Ed. I enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you for the compliments on Smoke. You and Steve have three great hounds. Bobby already has and I'm sure before its over with the other two will write their names in Bluetick History. Take Care.

Mr. Jack that is a Great picture of those two treed. Sounds like Gin 11 is going to be a Natural and a Fast learner. I enjoyed the trip we made together and looking forward to the next one. I haven't hunted this week even though I was tempted. Going to wait until I get back from Florida next week then going to hit it hard as I can stand it. Talk to you Soon.

Gin 11

Took Gin out for a short run tonight. Dropped her on a couple of feeder buckets. The first one that I dropped her on I was watching her and I knew she was smelling a cold track. She didn't open on it. she got it straitened out and moved out on it without opening. She moved in 200 yrds and opened a couple times on track and treed. I grabbed the rifle and started to her. She didn't tree hard, but she treed enough for me to get to her. I got to her and she was treed up a medium sized oak with a hugh pine right beside it. I walked in and leashed her and petted her up, and then started looking for the coon. I'm pretty sure he was not in the oak, but he could have easily been in the pine. I don't know wheather or not she had him or not, but I was glad to see her do this alone. It built up her confidence and mine. In here where I was hunting tonight there are about as many pines as there are oaks. I wasn't far from where Gin and Sheba treed the other night with a bbig pine right beside the oak tree, and when a coon gets in one of these pines you can just about forget him. We made one more drop, but never got a bark. We called it a night.

Thanks Steve, It was surely a fun trip for me. Hope you and the Family have a safe, fun trip to Florida.

Good hearing from you Bill, Take care.

Sheba 11 and Gin 11

Took Sheba and Gin out for a short round tonight. Turned them off an ole woods road into an oak and Cyprus bottom. They went in about 100 yrds and struk a pretty good track and worked it on in another 100 yrds and Sheba fell treed with Gin right behind her. I walked into them and they were treed up a medium sized oak that went up into a bigger oak. The second picture is of Gin treeing as I walked
into the tree. I shined the tree that they were treeing in and I could see it fairly well, but the bigger oak that it went into I couldn't see. We went on down the swamp and cast again, but never got a bark. We called it a night.

Mississippi State Championship Youth Hunt

They held the Ms. State youth hunt tonight in Brookhaven, Ms. I think everything got started around 9 oclock this morning. They held all kind of games and such for the youth all day and everything was free to the youths. There were a lot of youngsters there participating in all the activitys. I think Jeremy said that there were 17 that drew out in the youth hunt with ages I believe Jeremy said from 10 t0 16. I have been going for the last 3 years, but I have been coming down with something for the last 3 days, so I had to stay at home. I don't think that they could have picked a worse night for these little fellows to hunt. We have had a slow drizzle rain falling all day. and the later it got it seemed to be getting a little harder, but I tell you these little guys are a lot tougher than some of us older ones. One of the 12 year olds, Lucas Mcree had asked me a couple of weeks ago If he could hunt Smoke in the youth hunt and I had told him sure he could. I didn't get to go with them tonight, but I have been with them before and it is amazing to watch these young guys handle these dogs. Lucas won his cast with smoke and second place over all. I think Jeremy told me Lucas won a dog box and a light. The way mine and Jeremy's luck has been running lately, we may just have to hire this young fellow to handle our dogs. I would like to congratulate all the youngsters that participated in the activities to day and thank all the Mississippi state coonhunters for a job well done. Jeremy or some of the Ms. state Coonhunters will have the full results on the board and on facebook soon.
