Jaws, I agree with you and Wayne. With the blood that that pup has, he should come on good with a little time. Sometimes we give up on a pup too soon.....

I would not give up so quick on him at least let him have a good shot at his 1st kill season once they see what is going on and no change then I might cut my loss

I just told Ken about an update on my gyp... She really started well for me at about 1 to 1 1/2... but for about the last 6 months she really seemed to not do much of anything... she would hunt too, but never really opened on track or would tree...

she's just now in my opinion starting to show again for me... it's exciting to see her start moving again like i know she can...

i guess what i'm trying to say is that this summer i was thinking just about giving up on her, but i really think she's staring to put it all together again... she's been a different hound here lately than she has been in a long time... i can just tell by her body language and her moving about (and opening up) while in the woods she's coming together... just my two cents...

Mark

young hounds at times go through "spells" you know it's there but it isn't clicking.. It will give you fits... I find myself getting impatient with this the older I get.. You gotta just see it as an adolecent "glitch" most come through it better on the other side. You will see alot of guys say Lay em up for a month... It really does work...

You're excatly right Wayne.

I call them puppy stages. They start quick doing it all, getting better every time you turn them loose, then one night, they act like they've forgotten everything.
I've seen this with breaking colts to ride also. About the time you get proud of them, they make a fool out of you.
It's easier to see this in some than others, but they all go through it.
The good news is, they always come out better than they were before. I always like to see them start these spells, because that means that we're fixing to get them behind us. If you don't shoot him first... lol

I find that to be true especially with females after their 1st heat. Sometimes they are just flat for a couple months and then all of sudden it clicks and your in business! This dry hot summer isnt the best time to be too hard on a young dog/pup either. Be patient, he'll come around for you.

You're gyps' littermates Adkins Blue 9 and Adkins Ellie Mae went through the same thing...... When 9 came "back around" he was much better! Couldn't tell much about Ellie, when she came off of her pups, Mr. Valentino got her....... My son's dog (Patrick Henry) did the same thing, he's back to doing good now, I agree with these fellas, I believe they all go through it........ Just my 2 cents also.....

I call it the SOPHOMORE jinx. It usually happens between One and Two years of age... Some earlier and some latter...

PS: Remember Kenny, Don't shoot that dog...

sophomore jinx... or whatever you guys are calling it...

some of you know, and some don't... but coon hunting with hounds is really still new to me...

but i like hearing what you all are saying... i know i'm not crazy, but i can definitely see a turn around in her... instead of being frustrated and ready to scream - i now am excited to take her out! it's like something is just changing in her... i'll have her out again either tonight or definitely tomorrow. i'll have to keep you updated ken...

and i'm not the only one to see the change in her again... my buddies are commenting on it too... it is just exciting (at least for me) to see her moving good again... FINALLY!!

most all young dogs have a switch that needs to come on some come on quicker and it can seem to happen over night. I tell all new pup trainers to just think of them as kids not all kids start walking and talking at the same age.

alone time...

i'll do that... i can't say i won't take her out with me and my buddies... but i think i will try some alone time with her...

had her out tuesday night with an older walker... she opened up on one track and worked a good bit that night in my opinion... i'm happy to say that sometimes i don't know where she's at (and that's been unusual for her these past few months...)

i'll plan on taking her out by herself sometime this week or next...
