Smoke and Ella @ the Delta National Forest
Justin and I loaded Smoke and Ella up yesterday and traveled up to the Delta National Forest. Neither of us really knew anything about the Forest, but we went up there and rode around and when we found a place that looked good we turned them loose and did pretty good until the last turn loose. Now I have always heard what good hunting they have at the Delta National and they do, but it has its bad places too. I would advise any one going there to have someone with them that knows his way around up there. Our first turn loose we turned in at a camping spot with a 4-wheeler trail. We didn't carry our 4-wheelers this time. We turned the dogs into a pretty woods and they went in a little over 400 yrds and struck a cold track. They trailed around in there for about 15 min. and Ella came treed and Smoke backed her. We walked in to them and they were treed up a Persimmon tree. It was loaded with Persimmons. We shinned it for a few minutes and didn't find anything. We leashed the dogs and walked back to the truck and gave the dogs some water. It was dry up there and no water anywhere. We decided to drive down to another spot, and cast the dogs into a pretty woods. They went in about 300 yrds and struck a working track, and got to moving it pretty good for another 300 yrds and locked up treed. We walked into them and they were treed up a hugh oak tree. We shined for a few minutes and found the coon. He moved and we finally found him again. Justin made a good shot on him and out he came(yea, it surprised me to Jeremy) I wanted to get one out on Smoke and Justin's young female. Smoke hadn't been out, but one time in about 6 weeks. We got the coon and walked back to the truck. We still had not seen any water at all. We decided to move again and try to find a spot with a little water. We rode around some until we found a place, we didn't see any water, but there was some mud beside the road in the ditch and the garmin said Wetland and we could see on the Garmin what looked like Lilypads deeper in to the right so we decided to give it a try. We turned the dogs loose and they went in about 100 yrds to the left and hit a pretty good track and started moving it back toward the right and when they were about 150 yrds in front of us Ella locked up treed and Smoke kept moving. We walked into Where Ella was treeing. I mentioned to Justin where Ella got her name and he muttered something about "Don't never let women name your hunting dog" Which I didn't think Ella was a bad name. We got in to her and She had another Persimmon tree and it was loaded with persimmons. We didn't find anything in this one either. Smoke was getting deep and it showed on the Garmin that he was going right up through the middle of what looked like those Lilypads and said Wetland and I knew that it looked and sounded like he was having a rough time. Justin decided he would put Ella in the truck. and after he got back to where I was at Smoke treed. We started to him and the closer we got to him the rougher it got. There was some kind of bushes in there that grew up about 12 feet high and real thick with a lot of limbs on them. You had to just fight your way through them with Mud and water, mostly mud from ankle deep to almost over your boots. About 50 yrds before we got to where Smoke was treed we came to an opening about 30 yrds wide and it was just Lilypads and water. The water across the opening was almost over our boots. There was about 20 feet of those bushes between the water with the lilypads and where Smoke was treed and Justin had reached the edge of them. I was about half way across the water and lilypads. I could see the big Cyprus that Smoke was treeing on above the bushes. I told Justin to give me the rifle and to see if there was anything in there to shake and about that time, I don't know what it was something wherled the water right in front of me. I don't know wheather it was a big fish or an alligator, I never did see it, but it really wherled the water right in front of me. I watched for a moment to see if it was going to show above the water, but it never did. I got the rifle and Justin went under the tree and shook some bushes. but I never saw the coon, but there was a big hole up there so I guess he had made it home. I kept a watch from behind until I got out of the water, but I never saw anything. We watched the Garmins and made a swing around all the thick stuff and had a much easier trip back to the truckand called it a night.
