Thanks Mr. Jack, I hope you have a great 4th also. Hunting has been getting better but this heat makes it so hard.

Thursday night I was invited to hunt with Sleepy and AJ Smith. I really enjoyed the hunt, but Blueduck didn't do a thing. He wouldn't go hunting, I just couldn't understand that. We did tree 3 coons. A J's dog, Dillon treed 2 which was no surprise. I had hunted with him and he really looked good that night also. Sleepy's young female Rebellet, treed one alone also. Man she sounds good on the tree.

Sheba 11

Took Sheba 11 out for a run tonight. Turned her off an ole woods road into a Cypress Swamp. She went in a ways and never barked on track, just locked up treed. I rode up the road aways to get even with her and walked into her and she was treed up a medium sized oak. I walked around the tree trying to find a place where I could see the tree. It was like most trees around here this time of year, its so thick with limbs and leaves that you just cant see anything. I walked in under the tree and there were some vines and I pulled one and looked strait up the tree and he looked at me. I left the coon to run again, leashed Sheba and moved on down the swamp. Turned her back into the same bottom and again she went in a ways and just fell treed. I walked in to her and she was treed up a big Tuplar Gum in the edge of the slough. I shined it some, but it was too thick to see anything. I leashed her up and moved on around to the sunken swamp and turned her in there, She went in a couple hundred yrds and struck a track, moved it out a couple hundred yrds and locked up treed. I walked in to her and she was treed up a big oak just off a running branch that runs through the swamp. Again just to thick for me to see anything. I leashed Sheba up and we walked back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night. It sure was hot out there tonight with the humidity so high that you could almost feel it.

Smoke

Took Smoke out for a run tonight. We went down the river aways and dropped him off an ole woods road into an oak bottom with a slough running through it. he went in a couple hundred yrds and struck a working track, moved it out of there, crossed another woods road and into a cutover and on through there into another bottom and into a dry branch and locked up treed. I was able to ride to within 100 yrds of him and walked on in to him. He was treed up the tree that you see in the picture above. I couldn't find but one spot where I could see a small portion of the tree and I squalled, but he didn't look I walked in a pulled a vine and walked back out and I could see him moving on up the tree. I seen him a couple more times and then I didn't see him anymore. I leashed Smoke up and we moved on down the river. Turned him into another bottom and he went in 300 yrds and struck a cold track. He had a little trouble getting it lined out, but when he did he moved it on out of there. He was getting on in around 700 yrds and I decided I had better get closer. I hit another woods road and went down it and I saw pretty quick that I was going the wrong way, so I turned around and came back out of there and went in another gate. I went in a couple hundred yrds and stopped to listen and he was treed about 400 yrds in. I hit the starter on my 4-wheeler and it would not do nothing. I have been having some trouble with the cylinoid, so I cranked it with the hand crank cord and went on across a field and stopped and he was a little over 200 yrds in so I walked on in to him and I had to cross a branch and a beaver dam across a slough and before I got to him I crossed another woods road and I recognized the road. I would have had to go around a couple of miles, but I could have drove within 50 yrds of where he was treed. Anyway, I got to him and he had done got hot. He was treed up a big viney pine. The vines wouldn't shake all the way to the top and I could never make him look. I leashed Smoke up and we made our way back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.

Sheba 11's 1st compatition hunt

Chris came by yesterday evening and we loaded up Sheba 11 and traveled to Brookhaven, Ms. to their UKC Slam event. Now a Slam event is probably not the best hunt to take a 1 and a 1/2 year ole dog to because all dogs draw togeather. Grands, Nite Ch. and Reg.. We had a 4 dog cast, 1 dual Grand and 3 reg. dogs. I knew all the guys in the cast except one and I knew that if we could get the coons to cooperate we would have a good hunt. The coons did not cooperate, but we still had a good hunt. We turned them off an ole woods road into a Cypress bottom, They went in about 100 yrds and all got struck in on a good track. The guys that I was hunting with was Mr. Steve Wilson hunting Emma, Sleepy Williamson hunting Rebellett,
Chris Fortenberry hunting Sheba 11 and a young guy from La. hunting a Black and Tan and I cant remember either one of their names, but he was a good guy to hunt with and had a nice dog. I was just tagging alone. Well they all got struck in and went about 50 yrds and Steve treed Emma. No sooner had he treed her. I heard him say Heck I messed up she aint treed she's running wide open. I couldn't help but laugh the way he said it. About that time Sheba Treed to the right and Chris put her on the card. The other three dogs ran a track on out of there. Sheba held her tree and the 5 min. were up and we went to her. She was treed up a medium sized hardwood tree with a lot of vines in it and hard to shine. We shinned the tree for 10 minutes and could never get him to look. Just before Sheba's tree was closed. Steve treed Emma again and the other two guys tree their dogs. About that time Sheba's tree closed and we went to their tree. They were treed up a huge Beech Tree. We shinned the tree for 10 min. and never could get him to look. We called time out and went back to the truck and moved on down the swamp. We cast the dogs again off a woods road. They went in again about 100 yrds and struck, but this time it was a colder track and they were having to work for it. They trailed in there for about 30 min. and Sheba locked up treed. The black and tan and Rebellett treed with her. Emma was a couple hundred yrds to the left still trailing. We waited the 5 min. and walked in to where the dogs were treed. They were treed up a big oak just across a slough. We waded the slough and shinned the tree, but again no luck in finding the coon. They leashed the dogs and we walked back out of there a ways and cast them toward Emma. They trailed for a good ways and I think everyone had treed again and had gotten minused before time ran out and we caught the dogs. This was a good group of guys to hunt with that had good dogs that were capable of winning.

Smoke and Sheba 11

Chris and I got invited up to Justin's place at Crooked Creek
up near New Hebron, Ms. last night. Justin sure has a nice place. We hunted some cornfields. We had Smoke and Sheba 11 and Justin's young dog. We dropped them in the first cornfield and they went in about 100 yrds and struck a good track. They ran the coon into the woods and came back toward us and treed. We walked in to them and they were treed up a big hard wood with a lot of vines and we found the coon pretty quick. We left him to run againand loaded the dogs up and went to another corn field and they struck a cold track. They had a rough time getting it straitened out and Sheba and Smoke moved it on out off there and crossed a creek and moved on out. Justins young dog stayed around the corn field, came out to us and went back and after a while treed in the edge of the woods on the other side of the cornfield. Justin and Chris walked around to her and she had a coon. About the time they got back Smoke and Sheba treed in deep. We went around on another road and road around and got to within 20 feet of them. They were treed up a huge oak and we couldn't get to where we could see the back side of the tree at all . We never could get him to look so we loaded up and called it a night.

Smoke and Sheba 11

I loaded up Smoke and Sheba last night and met Chris down the river a ways and we turned out in a pretty swamp near the river and beanfields. We hadn't hunted here in about 8 months. We turned out near an ole slough. The last time we hunted there we saw several Gators, Chris told me he didn't think there would be enough water in the slough for gators right now. The dogs struck a pretty good track at about 50 yrds and into the slough they went. I could tell bby listening to the dogs in the water that there was plenty of water in there for gators. they crossed the slough Which is probably 100 yrds wide and locked up treed on the other side. We went around the slough and walked into them. They were treed up a huge oak. We could only see one side of the tree due to al the other trees around it. We never could get him to look so we petted up the dogs and moved on around closer to the river. They Struck another good track and ran him down the river a ways and locked up treed. We went around a field and while we were stil in the field Chris said he saw the coon. We left the 4-wheelers in the field and walked on in to them. They were treed up another big oak. It has been a long time since this swamp has been cut and there is some big pretty woods in here. We decided to knock this one out to the dogs and I was sure glad it was a boar coon. We decided to go back down to a sand bar on the river to give the dogs some water. After they got some water, we decided to turn them loose of the sand bar and they only went about 50 yrds and struck another good track. The went about 100 yrds and locked up treed. We rode down the river till we were even with them and made our way into them. It was real thick with bushes and vines that went up into several trees and you couldn't shine any of it. We madeour way back out of there and called it a night.

Smoke and Sheba 11

Chris came by about 9:30 tonight and we loaded up Smoke and Sheba and headed to the swamp. We dropped them off an ole woods road into a wet bottom and they went in about 100 yrds and struck a pretty fair track and moved it out a couple hundred yrds and locked up treed. We rode down the woods road until we were even with them and walked in to them. They were treed up a pretty good sized hardwood tree. We could shine the tree pretty good and if he was there we could not get him to look. We loaded the dogs up and moved on down the swamp. We turned them back into the same bottom farther down. They went in a couple hundred yrds and struck a cold track. They moved it up the slough about 300 yrds and just finally lost it. They came back down the slough and we caught them and loaded them up and went around to the sunken swamp. We turned them into it and they went in a couple hundred yrds and struck a pretty good track, moved it on in 250 yrds and locked up treed. We went around the woods road until we were even with them and walked in to them. Chris found the coon pretty quick and we knocked it out to the dogs. We walked back out and called it a night.

Smoke and Sheba 11

Chris came by Friday evening and he and Jeremy and I traveled to Hattisburg, Ms. To their UKC hunt. Chris was handling Sheba 11 and Jeremy was handling Smoke. I was just tagging alone. Jeremy lost his cast, but he said Smoke did a good job. Sheba had a dead cast. No coons seen. The judge and Chris seen the coon on one tree where Sheba was split by her self, but the other two guys didn't see it. Sat. Night Jeremy and me traveled to Ovette, Ms. to their UKC hunt. Jeremy handled Smoke and I handled Sheba. Jeremy won his cast, but another cast came in with more points. Sheba did a good job. She had first strike and her and a redbone worked an old bad track for about an hour. There was a walker dog with them but she circled back and went deep the other way and treed. We started toward her and just before we walked out of hearing I heard Sheba tree. I didn't tree her because it was really hot last night and I knew that we would have to walk to the Walker Dog and shine her tree and I didn't know if she would stay hooked as hot as it was until we got back or not. So we walked on to the Walker dog and couldn't find her coon. We came back out and when I walked back into hearing of Sheba She was still treeing hard so I treed her. The hunt was about over so the boy treed the redbone and we went to them. Sheba was a hot little girl when we got there. She had been treed close to an hour. She was treed up a big Elm tree leaning out over the creek with some of the limbs coming down close to the water. We shinned the tree and if he was there we never could get him to look.

Chris left Sat. morning going down to the Coast to where one of his sons was playing little League Baseball in the State Turnament. They won the State Tournament and now are looking forward to playing in the Little World Series in Laurel, Ms. at the end of this month. I also found out that this team has only lost one game in the last 3 years. I may just have to not hunt during that time and go watch them play.

HOT

It is Hot for sure Mr. Jack and I'm like you and hate to see a hound tree very long in this heat. Congrats to Chris and the boys on their wins, that's a heck of a record. I worry about those kids playing ball in this heat as much as I do the hounds, don't know how they do it. Mr. Ed said it was Louisiana Hot up in Illinois. Heat Index near 110. Hunting been slow for the young hounds, big, bright moon and not hitting any tracks they can handle. Looked back on my thread and it was the same the past two years for the month of July. Picked up some in August when they in the Vines back in the swamp. I will give you a shout tomorrow or Wednesday about hunting one morning if you like. Unless it rains it's just to hot at dark, Take Care.

Smoke and Sheba 11

Chris and I met up about 9:30 down the river aways and had a good hunt. We dropped Smoke and Sheba out at the edge of a bean field near the edge of an ole slough. They went in about 150 yrds and struck a pretty good track. They rolled it out of there to the back side off the slough which was about 300 yrds and locked up treed. We went around the edge of the bean field and went in to about 50 yrds of them and walked on in to them. They were treed up a huge oak. We found the coon pretty quick and it was moving around a lot. I figured it was an ole sow coon that had little ones some where so we left her to raise her young. We leashed the dogs and walked back to the 4-wheelers and went around next to the river where there are some muscadine vines and we turned the dogs loose there and they struck a cold track and worked it for probably a mile or so up the river and treed. We rode the 4-wheelers to wihin about 75 yrds of them and walked in to them. The coon had really played a good one on them. They were treed on a medium sized oak they had been broke off by some storm in the past about 15 feet high and a big vine lay over the tree where it had broke off and the other end of the vine had went on out thru the woods where the top part had blown. The coon just went up the snag to the vine and walked right on out of there, leaving the dogs treed on the snag. We leashed the dogs and came back to the bean field and rode on around it aways and turned loose at the edge of the bean field and they went in about 15 yrds and struck a hot track and came right up side the bean field and locked up treed. We shined the coon from the bean field and put him out to the dogs. We leashed the dogs up and called it a night.

Chris sure good to hear from you, hope you are able to get away from all that work soon and get Jazz back in the woods.
