Sounds like a typical hound. I enjoy keeping a log and tabulating #s, seems some people think it'd be hard or a waste of time.

Now we're talking about a coondog. When they open their mouth do they get treed on that track with the coon. Do they tree coon that you didn't know you had.

Accuracy stats den trees slicks etc none of it matters so long as your dog is putting forth its best effort and you like it, I have went for weeks and saw a coon in every tree went and saw nothing but dens and slicks but who cares my dog gave it all every night ,Racoons are not dumb and dogs are not the smartest animal alive and neither are we.

If you enjoy your dog there is a lot that's acceptable!lol all dogs miss once and a while that's life but dwelling on numbers and keep in stats is a good way to take the fun out of the hunt and makes it hard to appreciate your dogs hard work.

Keeping up with a dog's performance isn't for everyone. I enjoy it but couldn't believe my numbers at 1st and will agree it may discourage some people. I place accuracy above all else but completely understand guys who put handle, mouth, range, speed or anything else 1st. I started keeping stats when I stopped shooting very many coon.

Yea if u have fun hunting the dog u got by all means wear it out.....but I have buddy's that truly forget bout all the bad hunts and focus solely on them couple of nights where it did something right....one such friend started writing everything down after 2 months he made a pro's and cons list the cons out weight the pros.....so he got a good dog and hadent realized what all he was missing by hunting a sub standard houd

In everyone's opinon what's worse a slick tree or a track that the dog can't finish or is it equally as bad?

Obviously if competition hunts are your thing, both are bad faults.

In a pleasure dog, I absolutely wouldn't keep one that consistently slick trees. Knock on wood, I've never had a dog like that. We don't have a big enough coon population to spend time walking to empty trees.
I have no use for a dog that can't work a track. I've had several that would quit tracks they couldn't finish, but it was mostly due to lack of experience. If they get hunted enough they will learn to figure them out.

first hunting dog was a half border collie half who knows what.when ralph barked up you could cock the hammer back.95 percent accurate with the other 5 being dozer piles hole in the ground or dens.years ago when I got my first hound my grampa gave me some advice on how to train.he never had hounds at the time but told me when he did he started them all out as pups running rabbits.he told me that a rabbit was the hardest thing to track that he knew of in the woods.said if a hound pup couldn't run a rabbit and pick up looses he wasn't worth messing with.he didn't carry a gun used a axe to get his game .in the great depression coon and possum was what was for dinner.i now use the rabbit test on all my pups.to sorry to track a rabbit and desire to pick up looses not worth my time to train any farther and culled.you would be surprised at the number of pups that don't pass the rabbit test.i don't think it has much to do with their nose just the lack of desire to finish tracks and no brains that's the plague of todays hounds.train and hunt with your buddies slick tree dogs you will get the same.get one that can track a rabbit and start seeing coon when they tree.

I have never walked a mile back in the hills to a hound on a track that they didn't finish. A slick tree is worse for me. However, I do want a hound to get gone from a track they can't finish. Jacking around in one spot irritates me.

a dog jacking around on a track can be irritating but that happens sometimes. here is a funny story. i was at a hunt one time in a cast with a slick treeing dog an my gyp opened on a oldder track an made a couple barks didn't hardly get it moveing an the slick treeing dog came busting in there an made a bark or two an blew up treed. i turned to his handler an said i could tell the way my gyp was barking it was a coldder track an he( his dog) didin't even work the track out and he treed him n said it is what it is.
yep you guessed it,125- pionts. that fellow doesn't like a dog that takes more than a few minutes to tree a coon.
to each his own. oh yea my gyp finished the track an she never lost a hunt to that dog but he did make gr nt ch an i hunted against him a few times an only ever saw the dog tree 1 coon.

A good comp. dog isn't always a good coondog and a good coondog isn't always a good comp. dog but occasionally they overlap.

I'm Call in b.s. on that. Speed, consistancy, and accuracy makes for a great competition dog. Just because a dog can boo hoo around forever and finally tree the coon doesn't make it a coondog it makes it a dog that Can tree a coon and that's all. A Shepard can tree a coon.

now that is a sorry statement. unfortunately it's almost correct, it should have started out saying a winning comp dog isn't always a coon dog.

Only when the winning was done by a less than honorable handler.

So does Accuracy, consistency and speed, but just like you put in your post few people put accuracy 1st.

The people that are winning consistently its there #1 priority. You don't have to have it to win but if you want to win big time you have to have it.

If you are feeding, hunting and keeping that dog then you are accepting that hounds accuracy. No more no less .

UNacceptable accuracy.
Someone should post a poll on what gets done when they don't have acceptable accuracy.
My guesses
1. Sold or traded
2. Breed
3. Hunted
4. I'd guess 5% or fewer are culled
