This is a very good point...two of the best dogs I ever saw were never competition hunted. Both were females, one a walker, the other a bluetick. When they barked you were soon going to be looking at a coon...not a hollow, not a den.
Usually though, if the dog is fantastic enough, people know and it doesn't end up getting passed up entirely.
Many moons ago a local guy named Gordon Gilroy had a dog named Yadkin River Crowder. Crowder was a nite champion and after he made it I don't think Gordon hunted him in anymore UKC hunts. In fact, if I remember right he took Crowder to the Grand American a few times and one of them they didn't get to hunt because they were delayed in snow. Crowder was Sackets daddy...Sacket was Sacket Jr's daddy and he had Rat Attack. We never thought back then that anything like that would happen...Crowder didn't really have a lot of puppies, but, point is he was a good one and he was bred enough.
