Great dogs dont need to get alone if they are in front! Kinda like a spoiled kid that dont wanna play when they cant have it their way! go kick the ball alone? Lack of ambition and desire to compete is poor development socially...... I sure dont want that in my kennels gene pool!

Long before any comp, hounds were used to hunt for food and work to tree or hold at bay the animal desired....Nowhere in history is there talk of the special hound that got alone!....Our 4 fathers would of culled them for not helping in the hunt.....Like a bad employee if they dont work well with other, fire em'!

I talked with a guy one time who didn't like hiss young female because she wouldn't pack with his brothers older dog and was finding fault with her. i ask him why he wasn't faulting his brothers dog for not packing wit his young female. i pleasure hunt way more than i competition hunt but i still want dogs that will do their own thing.

some of these pack dogs probally just get it honest from their owners. you know the ones that don't want to make it on their merits so they attach themselves to a line or breeder so they can share in the successes of others and ride the coattails. kind of like a pack dog of another sort

Why...

do people think that independence equates to a competition style hound? I don't compete in the hunts but won't own one that won't do it by themselves. Most of those pack oriented dogs don't have enough hunt for me when they are cut by themselves. Since when did the old timers need a pack to tree a coon? I've never hunted with a pack of squirrel dogs. I've had the privilege to hunt with some great old houndsmen and none of those men wanted a bunch of me too style dogs. Why? Less game caught and harvested. Give me an independent dog any day. If I had to choose between a dead loner and a packer, give me the loner. When me and my hunting partner went hunting we would tree twice as many coons, which is why I coon hunt, to look at coons in trees. I will go to the tree by myself and my partner too, we ain't scared of the dark and don't need dogs that have to help each other tree a little ol coon.

balance

I want them balanced if he has company that's fine I want him the fastest in there that dosent make him a me to dog at all in my eyes that makes him a ass kicker. but if he can get one by him self to that's great to. but just because he will pack to a extent dosent make him a me to dog. dosent matter to me if he gets treed in front of them or beside them or away from them as long as he is first lol.

I wont own a dog that wont do it alone when hunting alone! Hard to tree bears with dogs that dont work as a team! I see coons as no different.....If turning 4 dogs down means going to 4 separate trees you can have it!.....In Maine you'll be in trouble......Especially in late December...If shooting a coon out, and it was on the ground would you want your dog to leave it and not join in on the action to find another one for himself instead? Why? one is already there????? to each is own....they wont eat here! A loner has all the ingredients of a trouble maker at a tree! He want to be alone for a reason and generally trouble follows!

won't play with others....LMAO

This is not a team sport, ..How many times have you seen a pack of dogs win the World Hunt?? or a cast of dogs Win A.O??. lol
......"I have only seen a single dog win any hunt"...
..Some me too dogs may win events buy their slick , quick tounged handler, But , for the most part it is the one that will tree coon with no help from others and get off by themselves tree a coon and hold pressure and be accurate...

..."Not to mouthy on the ground, deep and lonely with two looking down." Now that's my kind of hound....GetttrreDone!!!

We are not hunting bears in Maine, and the subject of the coon on the ground is miles away of the subject matter of any post on this thread. I've found most loners are the ones staying away from trouble. 4 different trees with meat in all 4 trees=1 awesome hunt.

Murph you ole rascal, you been giving them woodlot coons up that way the what for? Got a question for ya, lots of folks talk about two looking down, how in the world do you train those ole coons up there to look every time? Maybe I'm just unlucky, but more often than not these woodlot coons around here will not look at ya. Could it be one of the many mysteries of the bluetick message board forum?

Take care & keep ole blue in that timber!

because his hound is more then 50% accurate so instead of looking at imaginary coon there is actually one in the tree lol or maybe them pet coon you have up there are not interested in looking since they are so use to you treeing them all the time.................just giving you a hard time stoll, be good

After reading this entire thread, I'm not sure I even know what a good dog is......Pretty sure I've hunted a couple of mean dogs through the years and didn't even realize it......Huh.

I will have to disagree there, what I got I like, they will do it themselves and will get by themselves. I havnt been to a hunt in years and don't care to. Doesn't mean for one second that I don't pack a coon hound.

I've got a sick kid, so I am catching up on some reading.
But if anybody gets tired of this subject, there is some mighty good reading on the Coonhound forum about the use of Garmins in the hunts... Lol.
