Shane keep up the plan u have look foward to seeing u and ur dogs in the winners column.
I guess some lines of redbones out there might need a little improvement on tree power....I really don't know. Most of the redbones I hunt with I have drawn in hunts and they seemed to be pretty good tree dogs, especially the fireball, outlaw, coffman's, sawblade, pepper and yellow river stuff. But then again...most people are not going to bring a dog to a hunt that isnt a good tree dog...
The areas that I have seen that need work is drive, mouth, natural independence and quick locating ability. That last one is where we have to be very careful. That is where the walker guys let it get away from them. Most redbones end up locating pretty quick....by the time they finish out at 3-5 yrs
But before that age and especially in competition I have noticed that they tend to check themselves alot before committing to a tree. In a way this is good because they are moor accurate because of it...but from a competition standpoint it is bad because you will take fewer first trees unless they are off by themselves....which I would like to see more of. There is a fine line we need to watch between fast locating and accurate locating. There are super quick locating walker strains that are also accurate...so it can be done. In fact, there are some lines of redbones that seem to be the same....but I see alot of tight mouthed dogs from those strains and that is not a trait I like to see in a dog.
Alot of people think I am against certain lines of redbones...but I am not. I am however against certain traits that certain lines carry that I do not want to introduce into my line through outcrossing. My favorite little female that I am currently hunting is fireball bred on the top through Doc who went back to Yellow River Rocky, probably the best fireball dog I ever hunted with.
Some guys are using a different approach and method to get where they want to go in this breed....but we all have to admit, I think....that the redbone breed is once again motivated and definately not standing still at this time. Motivation comes in many forms and sometimes all it takes is a few passionate discussions (some might even call them heated ....) to get things moving. I love this breed and I love that soo many other people in it are just as passionate about improving it as I am. Our time is coming....and redbones are going to rise up again in a big way..... just wait and see
