Cody

Go talk to Jason Johnston or Paul Hennigan in WACO TEXAS they run greyhounds 365 days a year . Tell them I sent you to get the information keeping dogs cool in hot weather . Oh and BTW I have been fooling with dogs my entire 42 years. If those two guys wont help you, look up Kenneth Beihle or Kenny Turner. Waco has a lot of greyhound farms, I'm surprised in your 30 years you never knew what and how they fed.

Quit, you might say, Treeing after about 10 - 15 mins on the tree. Breathing so hard (heaving) they could catch there breath. The only thing they want was water, period. At that time I was feeding black gold (black bag) and stopped feeding it. Went down to a lower protein lower fat content and never had that problem again. Seen this happen many times since too. I'm not a nutritionist I'm a realist. Realistically over heating can and will happen in dogs in that heat eating high protein whatever the brand.

Running on a track for 5 min. Is not anything like hunting out in the woods (in the Woods) with no open breeze or air. A track is open. One hour of running then barking until you get there is nothing like a track. Comparing apples to oranges here. Not the same. But thanks for your comment anyway.

What about the coyote hunters who use the same dogs and same feed patterns ?

Consuming carbohydrates and proteins also increases the speed at which dogs body burns calories. When they eat, their metabolism increases because they generate more body heat, a process known as thermogenesis. However, proteins and carbohydrates increase thermogenesis at different rates. It's not the protein that causes the excess body heat, if this was the case, the Inuits would have been gorging on dog food instead of fats for 1000's of years.

Back to this new Purina Active feed.......
You can't find anything about it on any Purina site other than Active Senior. Close as I can tell, it must be one of those special WalMart formulations. You know, like the WalMart model 10/22"s and their inhouse model Remington 870's....cheap'ined up even from the regular factories lowest base models. I'm not a fan of any of WalMarts inhouse models of anything.
Am I missimg something about this new Active feed? Can you get it ANYWHERE other than WalMart?

Im not sure jim. I have fed high standard, pride green and brown bag. Diamone naturals lamb and rice and extreme athlete and I'm far more satisfied with this active dog feed. My dogs love it also. At first they crapped alot after a few weeks it has went way down. They look great and have pleanty of energy.

Cynthia, I like to think I hunt my dogs pretty hard, and most of the time I do. I feed Dog Chow thru the summer in the off season, and when trainning season "bear" and from that time thur the rest of the yr I feed Purina ONe and Dog Chow mixed.

This yr when trainning season started I did what I always did, started mixing the two, I noticed my after starting them on the mixture the dogs getting hotter and consuming more water. I think something must have changed over the last yr. I have since to Pro Plan and Dog Chow mixed. They got hoter less and I am now as well taking the One out of the equation. In the past I have also mixed Dog Chow and high end Pride dog food they did well.

I have always had good luck on the 26/18 pride and Dog Chow mixture. I will always feed some sort of Purina or some form of Pride or a mixture.

I think alot of the hot spot problems, which I have had this summer as well, only on one dog and she was fed Dog Chow, the worst the flea season is the more hot spots we see, regardless of feed. I do see the same thing out of ONE as you are thou.

One thing I do and I know everyone can't do is when I buy feed, I buy the whole skid a ton at a time hoping that that skid came from the same batch and it will last a good while. I didn't do this with the one, only bought 2 bags and like I said see the same thing you are describing.

Good luck with your feed problem and keep the dogs tuned in and true and blue. Love the looks of your dogs and there peds

Now I am not knocking anyone that has replied on this thread but, I am willing to bet that most who have replied on this thread don't hunt hard enough to evaluate any kind of feed. I have tried everything I could ever get my hands on trying to find the best feed I could find. I believe this, most feeds out there will keep the average dog in decent shape. There are a few out there I will never feed again. Corn will make a dog heat up however it is not a problem with most dogs. I have had some dogs that I would not feed dogfood with corn in it because they would heat up anyway and the corn would make it worst. As far as protein is concerned, it can not be to high for me but you must hunt the dog hard enough to use the protien. I love a high fat feed also. I hunt as hard as anyone I know when I am hunting. I have had a dog go down on one feed and switched him to another and kept hunting him everynight and watched him start gaining weight and building muscle in just a few days. Some of the feeds you guys are saying are so great I can't keep my hounds going on the way I hunt. I guess if your feed keeps your dog in good shape at your pace of hunting that is all that matters. If you want to know how good the feed is your feeding, hunt your dog 30 nights staight 4 to 8 hours a night and I will promiss you alot of opinions will change on the dog food debate. JMO

feeding a 63 lb female walker 25oz. a day.still put on weight.could be cut back more.
shine like a new dime,less stool,more energy.
40 lb bag ,feed less{no filler;corn/or soy}.works out the same as 50lb. of others.

tried a couple of bags, feed is ok but way to expensive for what is in the bag. did a little research on this product, it is manufactured in texas. anybody in the midwest is probably paying $4 per bag shipping cost, in this day and age a guy like myself needs to find a good feed that is manufactured locally to keep from paying these huge costs for shipping---jmo

there is plenty of good dog foods out there, no need to pay the extra costs.

Been reading some on the diamond and what people have been saying on this thread. There is a BIG difference between the reg diamond and the diamond naturals. The naturals is what you want to feed, its good solid dog food for the price and my dogs do great on it. During huinting season ill put my coondog on better feed like tast of the wild but other than that i recommend diamond naturals all the way not the reg diamond tho that stuff is junk.

Only diamond feed that I like. Don't really care for the other Diamond feeds. There are some good dogfoods out there but this stuff will keep them full of energy and builds muscle.

I hunt nearly 4-6 nights a week every week. Hunt from sundown till about 2-3 am. Purina dog chow has always worked for the past 3 yrs. Never a heat problem. Ive noticed with this new purina feed that I dont have to feedas much.

I've been down the diamond naturals / no corn road for over a year. I had a hard time keeping weight on with no corn diets. Hounds are atheletes and need the carbs from corn. I've had the best luck with feeds with corn as the third ingredient.
