Fabien you could buy dc50 update your 320 by hooking to your computer and going to garmin.com and yes your dc40 would still work ! that's how I understand it I like the 220 better myself easier on batteries easier for me to see dog page without my glasses and that's the screen I use the most ! so I won't be buying a dc50 anytime soon !

I have always just had DC 30 collars but just recently purchased a 40. The 40 works fine till I loose signal every once in a while, & will not pick signal bk up for about 15 Minutes where my DC 30 looses signal at same time & gets it bk with in seconds. Is this typical with the 40's? A friend of mine has the same problems with his. Is there something that can be done to fix this problem?

If it were me if buy 1-2 let em work the kinks out then get more! Or just wait.
I heard the upgrade could mess with existing DC40 or 30? I run the alpha but my buddy is running the 320. He's Leary. He's getting 1 from clinch mtn when they come out. They always advise start small then add to your system if you do good with it. Makes sense .

I've decided I might better look for a 320 before the 220 goes the way of the beep beep

The TT10 collar for the Alpha is so much better than the 20, 30 or 40's that I had before that you can't even make a serious comparison. Assuming the new 50 is as good as the TT10, it should blow away the other 3.

John if you got it two weeks ago it doesn't need updating. If it isn't working right just call the store and someone will help you. When you were asking about updating I didn't realize you were talking about a new collar. I would probably suggest you update your handheld if it's an older model.

so for those of you that have had the privilege of using and testing the new 50 and the Alpha collars which is the best as far as range and such, excluding the shocking mode. Someone posted that the 20, 30, and 40 collars are no comparison to the Alpha collar and the 50s should be comparable to the Alpha collars performance.

Come next yr is it going to be time for a new alpha collars collar to come out, I am expecting yes with detachable shocking posts or is there room for improvement on them as well.

Garmin needs to:

Build and sell a DC35. DC 30 with the same collar style and charging feature as this new DC 50. I wonder how many Astro 220 users are out there? I expect they could sell a bunch of them.
I have the Astro 220 with DC30 collars and have no problems with it at all, the system works great. If I could buy new DC 30's today I would buy 2 just for when mine finally quit working.

Lot of questions on why the DC 50's will not work with the Astro 220 units. Lots of questions on why the Asto series won't work with the Alpha series. Some point the finger at Garmin by saying they want you to throw away old products and buy newer products.

It is obvious since the Astro 220 and DC 20 days that Garmin keeps coming out with newer products. Each time they have changed it has been due to what we the customers have requested.

The 220 and DC 20 was something completely new to dog tracking. The DC 20 collar would not position itself properly on a dog for it to be used on running hounds. What did Garmin do. They came out with the DC 30. The DC 30 was a well thought out design except for the nylon collar material and charging port.

First generation collars had a square end and small round charging ports. The square end of the collar would fray and ice up in freezing temperatures up north could not be taken off a hound. They changed to a pointed end which helped and they changed to rectangle charging contacts. One big problem they had is GPS antenna plug backing out just enough to not make contact. Many people would then take them apart and damage the plug putting them back together. Garmin to solve that problem designed the DC 40 with the GPS antenna internal again like the DC 20 was. Problem with this design is when two or three other tracking/shocking collars are worn with the DC 40 the gps signal get blocked as the best design was on top of the dogs neck not under it.

Another thing is people wanted more channels as the running dog people kept getting interference. The government controls the frequencies this products runs on and they are limited. The Alpha came out about a half step out of the Astro frequency to allow it to track 20 dogs. That half step prevents it from working with the Astro system. (my opinion someday they could make it work).

Now the DC 50 shows up and it won't work with the Astro 220. Well neither will Birdseye Mapping.
The answer is simple. The communication platform in the Astro 220 will not handle what is needed to operate the DC 50. Please remember the DC 50 is what customers asked for.

Think about the computer your on. You load programs into it that would not work on computers built 5 years ago. Think about your phones, you load more music and pictures in your phone than would work on a phone 5 years ago.

Companies are giving us what we want, but the older models are just not compatible with where the electronic age is taking us. People that either don't want to change or can't afford to change can still use the older version of the products and track their dogs just fine.

I will leave you with this. Learn your astro no matter what version it is and keep it tuned up. At the first hint of a problem find out what it is and correct it. Check the screws on the bottom of your DC 30/40 collars and keep them tight as they will back out and water will get in. DO NOT over tighten your antenna and break the sma connection and please keep the antennas a safe distance from CB/FM Radios to prevent RF damage.

Jdgher at present there are several aftermarket collars for the DC 30 that are the same style as the DC 50 has. Actually why do you think Garmin went to that style collar, they saw what people wanted.

As far as charging it depends on what charging ports your DC 30 has. If they are rectangle you should have no problem charging. If they are the small circle contacts there are a few things you can do. With the collar in your hand and the receiver towards the ground the main problem is the round contact on the right side. The plastic housing is higher than the metal contact point. Not much but 1/1000 of an inch is all you need to have problems. Take a good knife blade and gently scrape some of the plastic away to allow contact.

If you want to go another route then take your charger and on the contact points just put one spot of solder on the curved part of the contact. You probably have noticed they have one charger that is smooth and one they actually put a small contact point on. You do those two things and you will have no problem charging a dc 30.

The last shipping dates from Garmin I saw was around the 19th of this month. I would say by the 25th everyone should be getting theirs and they will be shipping them out.

This date every year with new products usually moves one way or another. I am just sharing the latest info I have.
