Grady, there was an awesome club in Utah that used to do just that. They would run grade first and then UKC. I loved it because that little warm-up in the grade race usually helped our dogs do better in the UKC races....especially in the water races.

We tried to do that with our club in California, but the hardcore grade people weren't interested in running for just trophies.

Line video

Eddie Ross did that back in the 1980's only one time I seen it fail. 2 greyhounds that looked alike in senior final 1 had a tail and 1 did not looked exactly like one dog.

Radar Ahead and Timex, they tied them. Worked Great.

I see there's a FT and WR in Boyceville and Greenwood WI on the same day (6/16). They're both about the same distance from my house. Can anyone tell me about the ponds at both places, or have pics of them? Who has the bigger pond?

Went to many field trials there back in 1980's was a great place and people.

My old dog Baby Ridge won that race 8 times. We are painting our swim box this week and putting up cable this week or next. Fence is after that.

No, we don't. We tried it a few years ago. Some of our members entered to get the numbers up and after a while it was just our members, so we discontinued it. There is a little more work than the water race.

What's the pond like there....wide, narrow, big, small?

I wouldn't care if I wasn't trying to get "ol bank runner" finished. LOL Then again, by mid-June she'll probably be in heat anyhow.....

Shawn, the greenwood pond is narrow and a pretty fair length. They have fence running the length of the pond so you should be fine with a "bank runner"........as long as she doesn't have a higher preference for climbing fences. They do have a concrete block that is a little ways off the water so that can cause some hesitation for some dogs.

Thanks, Melissa!! Do you know what the pond at Boyceville is like? I hate to see them both on the same weekend since they're not that far apart.....for me anyhow.

See you at Wilton Saturday -- I hope.

That one is also long and not quite as narrow. The bank is pretty dense so again I think you would be fine.

This image was apart of a collage that I had so its not the best but it give you a little bit of an idea about what I mean.

Yep, you will see me at Wilton. Not so much for the water race but I've got a dog for the FT and just maybe one for the bench. I look forward to chatting again.

Thanks a bunch!!

Is the Boyceville pond fenced? Yes, my butthead will try and climb over a fence, and she doesn't like having to jump into the water from a raised area.
She'd be twice as fast if she quit trying so hard to get out and run! But she sure was a fast FT dog. LOL

Interest gauge in 2 day event - reg. Hounds only

How many would be interested in having a money swim saturday and field trial for money and then sunday having a UKC Bench show and UKC swim. We have room for camping and fishing for kids after swims are done. We also have a food and drinks available. On sat any registered hound, no matter what affiliation. Must have a card to prove registered.

On sunday UKC only, 4 swim winners get Trophy and pictures. $10.00 fee on both.

Bench show $10.00 and get pictures.

Money swim - $10.00 fee 4 per swim UKC rules With exceptions we will have re-entries only 1 place line and tree advances $10.00 back for first Place in Heat. Rest of money in heats and re-entries go to final. Final will pay out 75% of this money 4 ways 1st line and second line -1 st tree and 2nd tree. All dogs will be swam as open dogs with draw out method. 25% of final money goes to club to pay expenses. Any Registered hound can compete. No muzzles allowed. any fighting dog will be disqualified UKC rules with exceptions. NO Drugging of dogs either day a vet will be on location. I don't expect a problem here!!

This is a family event!! Traders and vendors will be welcome free setup.

Also we will have $1.00 gate fee each day.

How does this sound to Everybody??? Location Charleston Illinois.

I'd be most interested if it was 2 days of UKC WRs and FTs. Me personally, I'm not into the open events, so I wouldn't travel 7+ hrs for them.

The biggest deciding factors for me are:
*Being able to afford the trip (a big part of that being proximity and cost of dog-friendly motels)
*What titles I'm chasing with the dogs I'm running at the time
*And, in the case of the bank runner I'm trying to title right now, how big/wide the pond is

My husband likes open races but his job keeps him from being able to travel most of the year.

Thank you for reply!!

Might be hard to Get 2 UKC days in a row Thanks it might be possible. Open Events is hound only also. No Crosses.

We will see thanks for imput. Pond will have fences so far out in water, one side is solid brush. Not a high jump, Big Box.

I am thinking august as we have to train our dogs around here cause we haven't had swimming for years.

My thought was in open was draw power also. We are just looking for ideas.

Thanks Jeff A.

Hi Jeff !!!

I will give you My thoughts on Your idea. Please don't be offended cause I know Your heart is in the right place BUT I think Your wrong. Your saying that You want to increase the popularity of water raceing by having grade(not UKC reg.) but full hound races. Maybe you don't know it but this is the least popular of all the types of water races. In the first place You will have a lot of problems trying to decide exactly what is full hound (some registries have very lax breed standards and meaningless pedigrees ) and what is almost full hound ,what will be the decideing factor as to who is allowed to swim and who will drive hundreds of miles to get there only to have You send them home.In the second place, if You really think about it ,when was the last time You saw a grade bench show or a grade night hunt ? The reason is simple ,most people just don't keep grade hounds anymore. Even though I don't like them I think if Your going to have some grade races they should be anything goes in the way of dogs. You should eliminate fighting dogs but that should be Your only restriction. If You can have good sized cash winnings these type water races are often very popular and profitable for the club. As for Your UKC events I think they should be done on a different weekend altogather. I would try to make some of these if I can.

I would agree with stonehill. With out papers how are you going to tell what is full hound and what does it matter. I thought the idea was for more people to come. If they can bring there back yard pet and come out to play it looks like to me it would up the numbers if advertised in the right places.

I have no idea on how to schedule, but why would it be hard to get a 2 day event approved, especially if it was a Saturday and Sunday?

The reason I go to so many of Stigler, OK events is because most of them are 2 day events. 2 ft, 2 wr, 2 bs, heck, by the time it's time to go home I am wore out and broke, but usually have accomplished something towards my goals. As mentioned above, I have to plan my trips on the biggest bang for my buck. *largest chance of making progress on my title goals, hotels, distance all are deciding factors in where I haul to.

I love the idea of winning money, but, when ya start taking "open" and "money" in the same sentence, I will avoid it..Just sounds like bad medicine to me...I have talked to a lot of old timers that used to race when it was mostly "open"..All I have to say is, scary.

""On sat any registered hound, no matter what affiliation. Must have a card to prove registered.""
You are meaning UKC, AKC and PKC? Any others?

A couple years ago, someone showed up at a wr with a HUGE "Plott?" to swim...Well, there wasn't a soul there that didn't think it was a greyhound cross using Plott papers. I don't know what exactly happened, but I don't think the dog was allowed to race..I know it can happen at any time, but I think trying to mix "open" and "sanctioned" and "money"events together or in conjunction of each other will start developing problems. Completely and totally JMO

I don't think you can do an open and sactioned event on the same day. Not in UKC anyway but a person can single regester about anything so I don't see a problem with letting anything that has the entry enter ( if they are agressive there out for good). I think these days you might get parents bring there kids and pet. Now if there is money involved in the open that would make it a differant story. LOL
Might have a kids class and let them bring any breed. The funny as heck to see a poodle beet a mastiff across a pond.

We occasionally have a money race (pot race) with $5 entry after our UKC race. Just a couple guys get it together for fun. Only thing is unless it was very close in the UKC race you pretty much already know which dogs are fastest . Sometimes winners from the reg., ch's and Grch's haven't been in the water together so you don't know for sure. When you're playing locally you pretty much know who's got what.
The bear hunters around here have some very big WR get togethers mostly during the off season to stay in shape and for something to do. Pretty much all hounds but maybe cross bred between the 7 UKC breeds. Haven't been to one in years but they used to class the dogs in A, B and C division by where they placed in a qualifying swim just judgeing the line . Some were super fast and others slow but they placed in a competitive division to have a chance to win a couple bucks.

Just in case someone doesn't know. The UKC rules for WR & FT allow for ties in the HEATS . Dogs earn equal heat points and both advance to the final or semi-final without missing a beat or any arguments. For various reasons it seldom is that close twice. Both events have 2 line judges and if 1 say's this dog and the other that dog it's a tie and they both advance. That's also why you have 3 tree judges to cut the odds of ties at the tree. In the final you have to do it til someone wins.

It sounds like a lot of fun. We don't have many big game dogs. Just a few yote dogs around. Here we would have to depend on some with pets to have anything very big.
How far are the longer water races? The only one I have been to is the Stigler Okla. one. I love doing it and would like to do it here but the only water I know of is pretty far across. I would be afraid of some dogs drowning and people trying to save them.

Oh and I don't think the money thing would be any problem if it was kept pretty low.

Pond at our club is around 300 feet. Some shorter and some may be slightly longer.
Rule book at one time said the longer the better but thats not the case. Dog is like a race horse or any other animal . Some can go farther than others but if you go until they have to quit you;ve usually ruined them.
