I have seen a few of those 2-3 hour races during the rut around here over the years. A 25 lb boar coon can cover a lot of ground when he doesn't want to climb.

Old Hounds:....Treed coons with ease...I was younger,tougher,and had never ending ambition to hunt............


Current hounds:...Tree coons with ease.....I'm alot older,not as tough,and my hounds have alot more ambition to hunt than I do...............



Pretty much sums it up!

stonehill- Those old cornfield races and beanfields are where you went to train dogs to run tracks ! I have stood on the edges of bean fields and watched the coons run out the end of one row, drop over about 4 head back down another row and repeat it over and over for about 2 hrs. You could say when they started catching them on the ground, that they had track running down !
I always enjoyed the bean and corn field races, you could watch the dogs operate and watch as they learned. They would start following the trail that the coon laid down, but after a few races they would be running head up off to the sides running to catch. It also taught them to split off and run their own when the coons split up. My 2 old buddies decided to leave their dogs with me in a corn field one night while they went off for some reason. Everthing was going good, only had 7 dogs in the corn, before long they started splitting up, then it really got fun ! By the time those 2 buzzards got back I had treed over 10 coons and was give out walking back and forth across that dang corn field ! I did enjoy every minute of all and wish they were still around to do it again.

I believe there are plenty of good hounds today,it's in the blood, and how they are trained!I know some guys start a pup on "off game",then gripe about how junky dogs are....Some guys Start pups on rabbits, to make them track dogs,heck there are beagles that never learn to be a good track dog, if it is in'em they will be good track runners!

Sort through blood, start out with accurate, treedog, track driving breeding,get rid of what don't suit you, and you can find "good stuff"!

It amazes me how many people just want a "treedog",and think they got something,then they breed that and brag when they tree so young.......
But they don't have a coondog.....

They all get better when they die. There's enough good dogs out there right now all you have to do is pick a 3 generation dog and start hunting like you are a young man again. The old dogs will never beat today's hound if you hunt with the right ones. I hunted and owned a lot of the old blood in the 70's. They were good hounds but not like today's blood. I saying there is a lot more people hunting good hounds today than the few hunters that had good hounds in the past. A dead dog will never win the world hunt, but his off spring will.

I prefer the hounds of today. Sounds like listening to baseball, basketball or fishing stories. The older everyone gets the better they were. Lol.
