my vote isnt there

ive been competition hunting along time and know alot of the people idraw out with and have drawn them in the past.so i look for the coon just as hard as they would help me look for mine,so if i happen to draw ya and dont know ya,ill help ya look for your coon just as hard as mine, but if you fall into the wrong catagory of people, good luck on finding your coon, thats about as honest as i can put it.

The answer for me isn't in the poll. I look at every tree the same until I see some jack ass not shinning someones tree. Then his tree isn't getting shined very hard that's just how it works. I have had a lot of people find my coons and I have found a lot of theirs. I have also had some go blind. The ones I had go blind where both running the Purina race and where being a holes all night so I expected it.

If you will look hard for a coon on a mans tree that has been trying to put the screws to everyone all night. Then congratulations but I'm not that nice. Am I that honest yes. I will show him every coon I see but I'm not going to look very hard if he want for everyone else.

I really dont care if anyone finds my coon or not. I find em alone all week long and it usually doesnt take me 10 minutes if they are up there.

4 pages on this thread, all kinds of comments about personalities, integrity,do unto others, blah blah blah. But not a single comment about what it takes for the dog that does the best job tonight winning the cast. The hunts have become way to much about handling and way to little about the job the dog does.

Heres an idea, first drop right outa the box everyone swap dogs, you call mine i call yours. even though weve never heard them before id be willing to bet the results would put the best dog in the winners circle more often.

More cast have been lost because of the handler not knowing the dog than have every been won by someone trying to be slick. You can take that to the bank. Every weekend a handler instead of the dog looses a cast. So if you think its all about the dog then you have a different idea of the comp hunts then I do. I have a job to do just like the dog does. If we both do it correctly then we will win if either of us screws up our chances go way down.

I think you make my point pretty well. Its pretty simple when your not trying to be slick. Strike em when they open, Tree em when tey bark up... Every thing else is just playing a game to overcome the dogs holes.

There is nothing slick or dishonest about not treeing a dog when you know it isn't going to stay or waiting for the third bark to strike one. Its just my job as a handler.

So your dog is treed you know its treed but think it is going to pull so you dont tree your dog, and you dont think this is dishonest or slick handling but just doing your job. HMMMMMM

And when your dog opens you dont strike him because it might not mean hes on a coon HMMMM We have a different view of honesty.

No sire being dishonest would be telling you that is not my dog. I'll tell you its mine and I ain't treeing him because its not right. I've waited several times and took 4th tree on an old broke down track when I could have took first. That's my job.

Dishonesty is lying and I would appreciate it if you didn't accuse me of it. Thank you.

Didnt mean to offend you. I realize that is how the game is played, and lots of comp. humters would agree with your way of thinking. Its the only way to win with a dog that shouldnt.

Handling is part of it. Anyone thats ever won or lost a cast knows this is true.

No offence taken But I disagree with you on the hunts. The correct dog doesn't win every night but if you have one that is nice it will even out in the end. A lot of guys think they should have won when the opposite is true. So many handlers only listen to what their dog is doing that they don't know whats going on in the rest of the cast. I listen to every dog in the cast and call mine according to how the track and tree sounds. If you expect to do very well in the hunts you have to give your dog what it needs. Be honest about it but don't let pride get in the way and tree your dog every time it locates.

Do you know how many times I've heard handlers after tacking a second tree say "I should have treed first on that one" the whole time they don't know that their dog wasn't the one that was treed first. Because the only thing they listen to is what their dog is doing. Then they go back to the club and complain that someone took a tree from them and they should have one the cast. By next week the story will be that someone called their dog and cheated them.

That's a good example of what I mean. As much as we would like for it to be all about the dogs it just isn't. Choices you make determine the outcome. That's all there is to it. One other thing I'd like to mention that I don't think anyone ever thinks about. The money winner's didn't build the casino's , the loser's did. Same for nite hunt's. The cast winnner's didn't build ukc. The loser's did. Think about that.

john, I know what you are talking about (the best hound). if you and me go to the woods to pleasure hunt I would like to see both dogs do good and will brag on yours more than I would mine he he deserved it.
these guys are talking about COMPETITION. just like any other sport out there today. the coach has a lot to do with it. the best football team don't always win, sometimes you get out coached. when I go to a competition junt I am there to win. I will not cheat to do it but if the rules say I have 3 barks to strike I may use all 3, if I have 5 minutes to tree my hound I may take it.
