My dog has only got into one and I couldnt hold him trying to get them pulled. I am a 200 pound man and it remided me of a bucking horse everytime the pliers got close. I took my hand covered his eyes and got them all pulled easy. When he couldnt see the pliers coming he hardly moved while we pulled them. I walked by three in a short area one night and dont hunt out there to much anymore. My dog didnt have them as bad as the one in the picture but years ago I had one I had to have the vet get them out inside his mouth was full. I wouldnt wish that on anyones dog the rest of the trash animals suck but not as bad as porkys. Except maybe timberwolves I have been hearing more of them where we hunt and them things make me nervous.

I have heard of guys with drawing dogs from hunts do to not wanting to go where a porky or two or maybe even three were killed. is that true? In some ways I do not blame them, but in others I think it is ridiculous. How do you all feel about that?

we are infested with porkys here.I can easily kill have dozen a night and not hurt population.i dont understand.they must breed steady or live for ever.we usually pull a few quills every other night.we usually carry base ball bat.most my dogs have learned not to bit anymore.but it is still frustrating treeing them.hard training pups when you have one every 100 yards.i have shocked and shocked then dog tends not to hunt so good anymore.had one dog lose voice last year tried to swallow baby one.cost over 500.00 at vet.then had to cull him.know we use duct tape.it sure would be nice to hunt with out them

Just got home from up north last night. Training season is closed but tried a quick drop with 2 dogs that had some quills last fall. Fifteen minutes and they found one on the ground. 2 am before I finished and put them both away and been pulling small broken ones that are working thru each day since. Female is ready to go again but the male is on 3 legs with his left front ankle swollen and also the side of his muzzle below the eye. Was hoping these 2 had a better memory than that but once one dives in it's hard for others to stand back and watch. Hate it when they get quills in thier legs and feet . Niether was as loaded up as the dog in the picture on this post but a quill or 2 in the wrong place that you can't get will keep them gimping around for awhile.

Thanks guys!

Okay who brought up the porcupine subject!

My dog hasn't touched a porky in FOREVER, last night I let him go and he goes out of his gord...I figure that it is a bear. NOPE.....PORKY! He let me pull a few right away, and a few more at the truck. Any of you guys try to get your wife to help you with pulling the quills?.....Don't bother. Mine was terrified and crying because of the blood.

I did find a solution to the struggling dog though....Duct Tape on the snout. Keeps their jaw in control, it actually relaxed him so he just laid there and let me pull them.

The worst part is that I got one buried in my finger about 1/8"....HOLY CRAP! I got it out, but man did it HURT!

I guess she was scared to hurt the dog???????? You know how much blood comes out of their chin when you pull, you've been there. That freaked her out a bit. Didn't help the few times that she tried, she ended up yanking out a whisker and a few of those small hairs off his chin. The dog will probably never go for a porky after this high quality treatment.

I kept telling her "NO, PULL THE QUILLS!".

M.Y Good luck tonight if you hunt.

YOU WOULD THINK THAT JUST ONE TIME WITH THOSE S.O.B.'S WOULD BE ENOUGH. BUT I GUESS IT SOMETIMES IS NOT. ARE THEY PROTECTED IN NH. THEY ARE IN PA. I AM NOT SURE ABOUT MD AND WV, BUT I WOULD GUESS THEY ARE. DO NOT KNOW WHY THEY ARE.

i have a story with a not so good ending..

1st hound i ever had was a part plott/redbone..big red male..an he was around a year old when this night he got quilled..so me / brother / an hunting buddy wrestled him to the ground,my brother was stradled legged on him,i was holding is head an ron(buddy) was pulling quillls..
after a little pulling an fighting the dog seemed to relax, which we thought was great, untill we got all the quills out an went to let him up an guess what ? there he lay deader than a nit..
only thing we could figure was my brother had to much weight on him an suffacated him. unless he went into shock an died..
any way be caefull when pulling quills, pull some then give dog a break/breather so to speak...then go at it again..
