I agree with Penny.. Another thing to add to what she said..
It don't help that even the DEC's are helping with that by dropping baits (so called rabies vaccine) to the coon and other animals. Basically killing off the prey as we speak..

Ladies and Gentleman,
Let's not agrue about this small stuff, let's ban together and try to do the right thing by keeping our sport alive.
whether it is bench shows, field and water races, comp hunts or a good pleasure hunt.
Let's not let so called anti hunting activists take away things that mean alot to us..

I agree with you folks, that we need to unite and yes there are forces against us.

It's just that bench shows have about as much to do with hunting as a juice harp has to do with classical music.

If something has to be done in the middle of the day, how about a badminton tournament or a hot dog eating contest?

Has just as much to do with hunting and has no chance of ruining more breeds of hunting dogs!

Obviously there are a bunch of folks who enjoy the bench shows, and I am sure most of ya are hunting what ya show!

great for you!

To the folks who don't, a good looking dog that won't hunt is still a cull. Atleast get them fixed, if you care anything about the hunting tradition of these breeds!

There I have said everything I have to say about this. I know I am in the vast minority, but in 20 years when a dog can't tree a coon I am sure someone will look back and think;

"Man we sure got some purdy dogs, don't we? I wonder what they were supposed to do?"

Have a good one folks, enjoy your dog!

This is a pointless thread.

I for one really could careless what your opinions are about showing dogs or cattle or chickens or anything else for that matter.

The point is we support something we love. We are involved with the kids, the sick and the elderly. If what I donate to the club helps buy trophies or feed someone less fortunate, I did it out of the goodness of my heart and enjoyed every second of it.

There are a lot of great clubs out there that are really trying to make a difference in the legislative issues in our states. If me taking my hound and setting him on a bench helps that cause ~so that someone can't just come in and take him, or tell me what to do with him~ then GOOD for me!

Shame on you for making something wonderful sound like we have inserted some kind of a virus in to the hunting world!

If you hunt your dogs Cleo, I don't have a problem with it.

My opinion means zilch!

If you folks think that breeding dogs for better looks and no thought towards hunting is the way to go, then more power to ya!

Just don't be surprised if ya get what ya ask for!

Others have already!

In plain English:

Enjoyment, entertainment, the love of hounds, etc. If you look a few years back there was an article on a young man in a wheel chair couldn't hunt but he could show dogs. Now who are we to tell him which kind of dogs he had to show. He couldn't hunt anymore but still loved his hounds.

Penny is correct in we need to stick together as not doing so will get rid of hunting dogs a lot quicker than breeding the hunt out of them (which will never happen).

To each their own, but we (hunters and hound people) still need to stick together.

they should

bench shows serve no purpose in a hunting breed. [/B][/QUOTE]
It should if your dog has bad conformation it will break down ten times faster than a dog with good conformation.

Shows

Folks....It just boils down to this guy is not real intelligent and is obvious he is a trouble maker with a lot of time on his hands. Do what you will with your hounds! It is as simple as that! Their are many dogs that are "show dogs" that tree coons as good as any other. Their owner may not competition hunt or whatever. It is apparent that this guy hasn't done much homework as far as show dogs go. He probably doesnt even have a coon dog and is gripping about others showing theirs. When he looks back on history and see the dogs that have won major show titles that are also nite champions or grands then he might understand better. All these so called "show dogs" came from some of the best hunting dogs there were.....

Junior ...the funny thing is this guy probably doesn't even know or has ever heard of " Table Rock Mundo Jr." and the records he holds as a show dog and a coondog...There are so many more dogs like Mundo Jr. too. The list would go on!

"Man we sure got some purdy dogs, don't we? I wonder what they were supposed to do?"

If you can't find a dog to hunt in 20 years it will most likely be because it's illegal to turn one loose.
Breeders that are breeding for hunt know what they're looking for when they make a cross and breed for what they want. As long as it's legal to hunt the people who are only interested in ability will breed those dogs. It's been my experience that the owner has more to do with a dogs ability . If they enjoy hunting the dog gets woods time to learn something if they never make it to the woods they don't.

Long after we can't hunt there will be dogs in shows. As a boy I listened to my Grandfather telling about hunting rabbits with a ferret. That can't be done now and you see them for sale as pets. Changing times, laws and a complete lack of need is what changes dogs from hunting dogs to show dogs in the long run.

How many have a use for a wolf hound ? Little purpose for one these days but you still see them in shows.

To those of you who are saying that a dog who is hunted and have scratches and nicks on then will not win on the bench, if you will read in the rule book this can not be held against a dog! Judges like to see a dog who has been hunted in the woods and can get on the bench and looks great. I also hunt at the com. hunts and show as well. But I am like some of the others when you have small children, a full-time student and trying to take care of the housework (that women are suppose to do!) you are not able to stay in the woods late and hunt so the shows give us the chance to show our dogs and still be able to take our children home and put them in the bed. I am so glad that I started showing my dogs who can also hunt in the woods!!

Kudos to Brooke

Andrew and I met because he was buying a pup trainer from me. He lived in PA and drove 7 hours down to TN to pick her up from me. A year later, he moved to TN, and we have been together now for almost 2 years... thanks to coonhunting!

Well said byfaithhounds! I have 2 very young children at home, and the thought that I could actually stay out late at night running through the woods with my husband is laughable now. How many MEN out there have tried getting a baby sitter willing to work only after dark and frequently until the wee hours of the morning?

Leave them at the clubhouse?! That is not funny, it is plain sexest, rude, and ignorant. Men like you are the reason more women aren't in the woods. I much prefer someone who can speak to my face and not to my boobs!

Bench shows give our entire family the opportunity to spend time together doing something we enjoy, with dogs that we love. If someone else doesn't understand that, then I pity them. I pity the person who doesn't see the value in fun and healthy family activities. I pity the person who see's no value in how a dog is made, how they move across the ground, and how well behaved they are on leash and bench. I don't want a dog that is "just pretty" but I also don't want a slobbering idiot with no manners, duck feet and a swayed back!

For some of you others, to say that a hunting dog can't win on bench is rediculous. We have titled several hunting dogs with cuts, scars, and even healing gun shot wounds and metal plated hips! Our current best show dog is 1 win from GRCH and has permanent scars up two legs from a fence, and won her last sectional with a cut nose and bite marks in her ear! Doesn't sound like just a pretty face to you does it?
