I took a pup out for its first night in the woods ever. She went hunting with the old dogs right now. I mean flat got in the dark! She strikes first and works this track down the treeline, well all of the old dogs join in and we have got a dang good race going but that pup just flat runs away with the track! I look at my buddy and say holy sh!t! well the track goes out in the corn for about a hundred yards and then follows a fence line down into a creek. All of this sudden that pup lets loose a curl your toes kinda locate and falls treed! And I mean treed hard! All of the old dogs pile in behind her and treed as well. We make our way to the tree the whole way there me and my buddy are just buzzing with excitment about this powerhouse new prospect! Get there and they are treed in a cedar tree. It takes a few minutes but then we finally catch an eye! At this point I am over the moon with excitment and go to praising and loving on that pup! After about ten minutes I say well lets get out of here. We start walking out and I look back and now can see both eyes looking at me. I say aren't those eyes a little close together? Go back and look closer and we start arguing I say there is no way that is a coon. So my buddy climbs the tree and out bails a MINK!

Really what got me about it was ( I recon no coon had been stiring around close shortly, was that a dog pick up a track and worked in water and kept on keeping on working , so they must leave some favorable scent) Before it ever got worked up to a trotting track. I Know it wsa just our fortunes that that thing parrallelled that powerline all night and we could keep up fairly easy. I sure did enjoy that one though, enough to still remember it as one of the best.

Not A Good One

Lee and a dear friend of our that is no longer with us wanted to go one night. So they loaded up 2 dogs, one Lee was hunting for Warren Haslouer,. The dogs run a good 15 minutes and locked down. They made their way in and right off the bat what do they see? A Rattlesnake about ten feet up! The dogs were so close to the coon that it took that tree. He was setting up at the top. I know they said the hard part was that they like to have never made it out of the woods for looking up for rattlesnakes!!

A few years ago I went to a tree and the coon was up there, but I heard something thrashing about at my feet. It was about a 12 inch channel catfish. Apparently the coon had caught it and we ruined his party.

We had been in a serious drought that summer and the river was completely drying up. I walked around on the river and all the fish (including big ones but mostly gar) were stranded.

Maybe not the strangest animal

Maybe not the strangest animal but I had a coon one time that wouldn't stay in the tree. You'd get 40 50 yards from the tree an he'd bail out. Would tree in almost the same spot ever time. Finally I got wise an went to the tree lights out. An sure he enough there he sat treed in the middle of a beaver dam then something worse happened I realized I didn't have any bullets lol. Soon after turning the lights on he bailed out an I caught them off him. I never treed him again as far as I know. But I did get one 33 lbs about 200 yards from where I had been treein him. It is possible he finally ate the bullet.

Out with the bobcat dogs second week of Jan. My buddy was walking a cold track with one dog pickin away up a valley that was all blowdow, i was uptop with the truck and the other dogs in case we got the cat jumped. My buddy calls on the radio and says the dog has got bayed up on a a big brush pile and to hustle down with a couple young dogs and we would get a race goin.
I cut a couple dogs loose and head on down, by the time i get there all 3 dogs are fired up on a pile of brush about the size of a car, so we both climb up top and start jumpin,
Well it wernt no cat, about a 300# pissed off bear came bustin outa that pile, things got purty excitin for a few minutes. Mr. bear decided to climb a big pine about 50 yards away but he wasnt happy about gettin woke up.
Dam trashy dogs.

Turned loose on a old bear track on morning and the dogs trialed in to a rock batter and all at once they went from trailing to full blown baying. When I got there there was a goat. They had it backed up in the rocks and was baying it. It would head butt the dogs and they acted like they was gone to eat it. I hollered on the radio to my buddy to get up there cause he wouldn't believe it .
Bad part of it was we was mile away from any farms in National forest . Found out later that a trailer full of goats was coming throw there (some use it as a short cut) and the gate came open and they all got out and toke to the mtns. Heard of a couple other hunting groups getting on them and some got stretched. never seen any more after that year.

I hunt summertime sometimes around a guy that has the ( in my opinion) best Spanish and later in the season NC varieties of boiled Peanuts. you ever tasted . His wife has Goats . my dogs leave the goats alone .

yimmidy Cricket . no wonder ya'll Yankees can't stand boiled P nuts. You buy the black hulled ones , dried and rehydrated , and then boiled in a cast iron pot which turns them blackthe first day of January in South Carolina. out the back door of the Grand American. and try out boiled Peanuts yucketty poo , the worst I ever had. No wonder Yankees think they suck> If I wasn't such a Free market type of individual , LOL I'd be saying they ought to come out with yet another law. LOL I got a feeling the guy selling them black hulled pnuts is from up in the Moutains where they don't even get fresh green pnuts . But that is my guess. But they sure do suck if you don't know what a Pnut is , If you don't, then, like. how do you know what a coondog is?????

Yep , take a piece of SH dog and chain him to a post and sell a coondog off the chain, of Course if you are not a conoseaur of dang fine peanuts in season that ends in September, Then how in the world can you be expected not to buy a Southern Piece of Crap that ain't even Southern that hauled hyar? from up there in January? Some body could have saved a lot of hauling around costseseeses .

I ran alot of bird dogs for alot of years and had them point everythng. Snakes, turkeys, bobcats, deer, hogs, dry land terrapins, possums, logs, calves, 3 coons in one bunch, doves, porky pines.

One time I took a female to the vet and when I took her back to have the vet work on her she pointed their pet parrot. As soon as she saw it she parked it so I just styled her up and let her be. The girls in the office went nuts because she probably stayed there 10 minutes at least.

My buddy had his dogs bay an otter in a hole of water.

I had a rat terrier that would also point like a bird dog. She pointed a copperhead in my back yard and a rabbit. This dog could find dry land terrapins like no other. One morning she found and retrieved 6 of them to me in my shop. I had to put her in the house to turn them loose. And I would mark their back so I know it was not the same terrapin.

She woke me up one night and let me know that a 4 foot long chicken snake had got in the house and was under the bed.
