Forecast
GEORGETOWN, S.C. — Frigid cold, with a slight chance of snow on Friday.
That’s the forecast for the Georgetown County area, as arctic cold drifts in to stay for a good part of this week, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, N.C.
The cold snap is making national headlines because of it’s extended time it will impact the area, said forecaster Mark Bacon.
The unusually lengthy cold snap could last most of the week, he said.
A very brief, slight warm up on Wednesday and Thursday will be followed by more frigid air arriving by the weekend, Bacon said.
“It’s widespread,” Bacon said. It’s affecting the eastern two thirds of the country.”
There is a slight chance that snowfall could impact the Georgetown County area by Friday. Bacon said it is too early to say exactly what will happen by the end of the week.
“We’re not out of the woods here,” Bacon said. “It’s still kind of far off. It could start as a very cold rain on Thursday night and end up as snow on Friday.”
Bacon said an ice storm seems unlikely, but the precipitation forecast is still unpredictable for the end of the week.
“An ice storm seems unlikely,” he said. “It doesn’t seem the best [weather] set up for that.”
Chilly days, freezing nights
The daytime highs this week will struggle to reach 40 degrees, Bacon said. Nighttime temperatures will be in the 20s.
A temperature of 21 degrees was reported at the Georgetown County airport on Sunday morning, he said.
The record low for tonight [Monday] was 16 degrees, which was set on Dec. 4, 2008.
The cold spell is happening because there is a mass of cold air settled over the entire northern hemisphere, Bacon said.
“It’s very stable,” he said. “Cold air keeps dumping in
