I have been competition hunting for 29 years. I have hunted with several dogs, others have mentioned here. To this day I have only seen 1 redbone that I would feed. A dog named Bennetts Lone ranger. I love everything about the redbone ,except their ability , desire and competitive level. I don't believe there is a single coonhunter out there who would not love to have a good red dog. Better chance playing the lotto than getting one half way descent. I am not real big on culling dogs(too soft i guess) therefore, I don't go through many dogs. They become part of my family. I would not raise a pup off the #1 male and #1 female cross, if it was given to me. I feel 100% certain that it would be a waste and end up ,just another mouth to feed. you can't argue with fact and percentages. But if you are a blind and deaf gambler, cross the interstate with dreams of making it to the other side. If you are that lucky, you might get a descent redbone . Honestly ,how many could be that lucky.

thanks Clyde

There are some great dogs out there. We didn't have alot of luck that night but at least we saw some Grease at the end. Not everyone likes Redbones, but I got a couple here that I don't mind feeding. Give me a call and we'll kick'em one night.

As far as the best I've hunted with, I own one and own half of the other. Not evryone will agree with that, but thats OK they suit me.

best red dog

Anybody ever hunt with SANDY CREEK JAKE, he was coon dog easy to handle didn't need a lead or to be tied in truck or four wheeler. wouldn't unload no matter how many dogs were there running, until he was told could call him off of a tree. Didn't need to lead him. Ilike y black dogs, I do appreciate a real coon dog and I am not color blind.

I have hunted and hunted with alot of good Redbones:
1) NT CH Toussaint Maple lure Cool boy - hit & killed by a car at 2 1/2 yrs old was of the best. He didn't have a chance to get known in the hunts was just starting to hit the big hunts..
2) GRNTCH Toussaint Hardball - enjoyed hunting him in the hunts or for pleasure.
3) Little Man that Danny now owns from Doug Moore
4) Ranger - Woody Brinson
5) Talker II - one of thee best

best red dog

this is a great post . and for sure some great hounds have been brought to mind. but it is also a perfect example of how some folks are just plane blind, one sided.never hunted with or seen a good red dog . what a crock. these are the same people you could take to the grand canyon , and all they would see is a big hole. my advice to these gents would be to get out more. by the way , i'm a walker man though and though.

"Dawn's Timber Jack"..Owned by Allen Halada. Speed wheelin coon treein machine!

"Go man Sam"..Hunted with him many times, nice dawg but not flashy or special really but he did know how to go!....LOL!!

My personal favorite is the lil Reddawg "S & R's Treein Red Ruby" that I reared & unfortunately had'ta part with because of the old mity dollar thing. That lil dawg was on a couple hundred tree's at least alone before she was 10 month's old. I was obsessed with her & we spent a pile of time, her & I, chasin coon. Big mouth, For ever more a stay put split treein lil heifer. Never seen her on a slick & she will go by other's that are.

When I handed over the leash a tad of me went with her.......................

The dog that got me hooked.

my dad had a red colored female, no papers. Got her from a buddy of his that lived on the edge of town that told him he couldnt keep her because she was tree'd on something some where most nights and days, she wasnt yet a year old. Well dad went to get her, she wasnt at home she was tree'd in a little wood lot on a house cat.
He turned out a few coon for her and thats about all it took. He won a lot of grade/club hunts with her. She beat some well known dogs that alot of people have line bred on. She had a mind to compete always wanted the first tree it seemed. My dad was just a hide hunter and hated laying a female up so he had her fixed. Just a country hide hunter that never knew what he had he says. I hunted with the dog when i first started hunting she was old but still tree a lot of coon for us.

Well let me see

I've had the pleasure to see more than one or two tree a coon up there in the top of those would be of course Fireball's Jackpot Jackie 4th UKC World who I now own, Timber Knockin Tex, Sandy Creek Jake, Yellow River Music and Rebel, Timber Choppin Dan ACHA World Ch., Wright's Timber Hoss/ Rev. Red's dad was a good solid one and of course would have to put my old NtCh. Ginger female in there. When a hound comes out of retirement at 9 and wins 5 first place NtCh cast straight that should tell ya something about her. Opie, yes as you can see most of these are Fireball bred hounds same as the Buster line of hounds.

i tell you what i was a english man through and through i got a redbone because my sister wanted to show something the dog never dropped his second testicle and was not a very pretty dog he started late treed his first coon at fifeteen months a month later i placed second and then decided to wait until he was two took him to a hunt on his second birth day after the second drop two of the three guys already withdrew i kept a journal i walked to four slick trees never used a lead he was the smartest dog i have ever known if you hunted him by himself he would hunt like a pleasure dog with others he was a competion machine never backed a single dog in his life. i lost him at a little over two years he was shot on a tree with a coon in a sheep pen while a english dog was killing the sheep. i just bought two new pups they are both solid red that dog made the impression of a life time on me cant thank him enough

Reddogs

My 1 female Hyner Mtn. Mary, she was a go getter, turn her loose & pick her up at the tree. She was only in about 7 nite hunts made Nt,Ch, winning Pa State hunt. I think 1982.My younger brother & I used to hunt her 6 nites a week from dark til dawn. She would split tree all the time be by herself & have the coon. The only thing was her voice wasn't very loud. That was the only fault that she had.( In
my eyes} She has been going about 23 yrs now & still think of her often.
