There is no communicating between the collar and the handheld unit via a sattelite. While I'm sure that the technology is there, and would essentially make the system where you could track a dog on the other side of the world, I'm sure it is not available for civilian use.

Here is the way it works.

The collar unit has a GPS receiver and a VHF transmitter. The collar simply uses the GPS satellites to know it's specific GPS coordinates. The collar then uses the VHF transmitter to transmit the collar coordinates to the handheld unit.

The reception is determined by the ability of the collar to transmit the signal, and the handheld unit to recieve the signal.....simple as that.

The hand held unit also has a GPS reciver in it, and it knows where it is...and calculates the distance and direction of the collar. Once it is done with that calculation, it draws it on a map.....

No satellite is used to transmit the signal...ever.

Mr. Joe, what is the secret to get a track overlaid on Google Earth. I am viewing one in Mapsource and am able to make the link to Google, but mine will only show a triangle (in the right area).......... I guess indicating where the track started?

You might have to fiddle with the timeline along the top right edge of Google Earth....it's a little tricky, but if you goof with it long enough, you'll figure it out.

Good news, and bad news....

The good news is that the Micro SD cards are available (they had been on back order)

The Bad news...well, you live in a "bad" area for the pre-loaded cards.

One card covers this area

And another Card covers this area:

The cards pre loaded with the maps are 86.00 each.....that price is from Garmin....I think you could shop around and save a little, but not much on them.

I bought a 2GB micro SD card for 25.00, and I found a real "steal" on the latest greatest Garmin Topo Map 2008 CD, I paid 77.00 for it. So I have a hundred bucks in maps, but I can pick and choose which areas of the country (any area in the continental US) that I want to upload onto my card.

What's easiest for me, may be worth a little extra to you.....your gonna have 172.00 wrapped up in pre loaded cards, if you want to cover all of the area you quoted, or you could order the SD card and the map..then upload the maps you want yourself.

The 2GB cards will hold about half the country.....or more.

Both the Topo maps and the road maps have all the roads on them.....

I like the topo maps because I can see elevation changes. I know how many ridges over the dog is....which could come in handy in your country!

That was it Joe. Had never noticed the "time line" deal up there before.

Man it is AWESOME being able to overlay tracks on Google! This thing may make a dog trainer out of me yet.

Are there any maps available for free to download?

I'd go partners with someone to get the maps I need, just to reduce the cost. Seems kind of overkill for EVERYONE to buy the same maps.

P.S. I did some searching for maps and came across these free maps

http://garminmapsearch.com/

You can click on an area and it will find the maps for that area. It appears to me these maps are compatible with Garmin GPS's. The files end in an *.img

Has anybody tried to use these?
