Mr Wittenborn, my take on the shutout dog question was incorrect, I was wrong, so were most of the others that posted on that one and I also stated on this thread that I would now follow Todds interp of the rule even though I didn't think it made sense. You can cruise this site till the cows come home and you won't find me ever saying I wouldn't go by the rules. You know the answer to this one, the dog is stuck with the minus. You don't like it but what you really don't like is that you can't find a way to go back and unminus that dog and it pisses you off so bad that you have settled for just ragging on me. I have no problem with that. Have at it, I can tell it pleases you.

If memory serves me correctly, I've seen where you have said before that the Rule "meant to say or means" such & such when in PLAIN ENGLISH, it did not say that, as we seen last week.

And as for as participating in Comp. Hunts, I would say that I have attended about as many as any one on here. That includes starting with the Possom Rule Hunts in 1948. I have seen alot of changes in the Rules & in the Dog's over the years. But the BIGGEST CHANGES that I have seen over the years have been in the PEOPLE. I only have to refer to the back of the Magizines to verify that PARTICPATION PER EVENT, is down considerably from 20, 30, 40, & 50 years ago. I don't think that there are fewer Registered dogs today, so there must be some other reason???? Do you want to guess, what I think ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS IS????

Good post John.

This is kind of funny. Pretty much the same thing happened to me Fri. night. The only thing different was the tree was on a ten foot bluff and the dog couldn't help but slide in the river since the bank was slick with mud. She did try though, that's good enough for me, forget the judge and what was done.

I am going to try and find a pic I have. It a pic of one of my dogs from years ago.
Mack was treed in about 3 feet of running water. Its an awsome pic.
Story behind it is this. We we hunting after several days of rain the creeks were out of thier banks, but it was a great night to hunt. Mack struck and ran a 45 min race up and over a steep ridge and down to the creek. We drove around only to find out I couldnt get to him due to the water. we drove back around and I walked in to him.
He was in a flat bottom that the creek ran threw. I had to pull my boots up and wade water about 50 steps or so befor I even got to him. There he was, with water running over his back close to shoulder deep. I almost always carry a camera, so I got the best pix I have ever taken.
I will find the best one and post it.

The main reason hunt entries are down at a club is because the number of hunts and different registries. I bet if you crunched the numbers there are more dogs competition hunted on any given weekend of the year versus the numbers 20, 30, and 40 years ago.

Jason M.

I'm guessing that you are a younger person that didn't go to the Hunts back then????

As an example the Ada Ok. Walker Days would draw more Nt. Champions (several times there were over 130 Nt. Ch.) in one night in the 70's & 80's, then they draw TOTAL DOGS today. I'm sure that if you checked it's probably the same all over the country. And the regular ole weekend Reg. Hunts, during the SUMMER MONTHS, there is no comparision. They would also draw more Nt. Champions back then, then there are TOTAL ENTRIES TODAY, at the SAME CLUBS. I hope that there is someone out there, that has the resources to (as you say) CRUNCH THESE NUMBERS. Even the POSSUM RULE HUNTS, in the late 40's & early 50's would draw over 100 dogs at some of the Hunts, & these were not REGISTERED HUNTS.

And as some of you will probably say, that these NUMBERS have got BIGGER & BETTER WITH TIME, all I say is go & ASK SOME OF THE COONHUNTERS THAT WERE THERE.

example:

Two state area you have 10 sanctioned competition hunts in a two state are on a Friday night. Each hunt has 10 dogs thus giving you 100 dogs hunted in a Friday night competition hunt.

Twenty, Thirty, or Forty years ago you may have had one hunt on that Friday night in a two state area that drew 80 to 90 dogs.

All, I am saying is that if you took all the hunts for the whole year from every registry and compared the entries to all the hunts from every registry 20, 30, or 40 years ago todays number would blow them away. Thus, there are more dogs being competition hunted than there was 20, 30, and 40 years ago. Yeah, I wish there was someone that could crunch the numbers for you.

Not to hard. I've seen plenty of coons swim down stream and grab ahold on something. You got to think, a dog isn't going to swim ahead of the coon and compenste for the current, it's going to go straight for it and get swept to the side and miss.

DOG TREED IN RIVER

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN(LET'S BE POLITICALLY CORRECT HERE)
ALL OF THIS FALLS BACK ON YOUR GUIDE! HE SHOULD HAVE TOLD THE CAST ABOUT THE RIVER TO BEGIN WITH! IF HE DIDN'T, HE IS NOT MUCH OF A SPORTSMAN IN MY BOOK. THIS WOULD HAVE HELPED SOLVE THE PROBLEM TO SOME EXTENT!!!

Doesn't matter if the guide told them or not. You have to hunt where they take you, all you can do is withdraw if you don't want any water. There's a small chance that you could talk to the pres. or the MOH at the club to change casts, but usually you go with who you draw

DOG TREED IN RIVER

REDNITEHUNTER,
ALL I AM SAYING IS THE GUIDE SHOULD HAVE BEEN SPORTSMAN ENOUGH TO TELL THE CAST ABOUT THE RIVER. THERE WAS NEVER ANYTHING MENTIONED IN THIS THREAD ABOUT THE GUIDE TELLING THE CAST ABOUT THE RIVER. IF HE WANTED TO WIN THAT BAD THEN THAT'S ON HIM! I HAVE BEEN AROUND THIS GAME FOR 30 YEARS AND I ALWAYS PLAY FAIR! I ALWAYS TELL THE CAST ABOUT CUTOVERS, RIVERS, SWAMPS, THICKETS, FEEDBUCKETS,ETC. I HAVEN'T DONE A WHOLE LOT OF WINNING OVER THE YEARS, BUT MY PERCENTAGE OF WINNING AT THE HUNTS I HAVE BEEN TO IS PRETTY HIGH. THAT'S WHAT YOU GET FOR BEING HONEST AND USING COMMON SENSE! IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE ONE OF THOSE JUDGES OR GUIDES WHO WON'T LET THE BEST DOG WIN! AND FOR THAT I FEEL SORRY FOR YOU!

Goes back to you bud. I don't judge or guide anymore, to much to bother with. There's always some nit-picker. Let the best dog win? I've scratched the dog I'm handling more than once if I don't think that it's doing its best, just not to waste the time of the others in the cast. Know what? I'll even help the other hunters shine the tree and tell where the coon is if they can't find it. The guide just has to tell where they're going, doesn't have to give all the details unless asked. You should use common sense and expect water wherever you go, after all a coon has to drink.

Depends on how good you know the folks at the club Elvis. I don't so I'm always stuck climbing the bluffs. I have heard of it being done though.

Keith is telling you guys the truth. I have drawn out with him as the guide, me as the guide, and with someone else as the guide. He is always straight up and a good sportsman. As for JiM I have never met him but I disagree with his take on the fact that a scorecard cannot be changed by the cast. I am not saying that he is wrong on minussing the dog. The MOH checklist does state however that if at all possible that all questions are to be settled in the woods. That means that if the majority of the cast agrees that if something is scored wrong and needs to be changed then there is nothing wrong with correcting the scorecard. JiM stated earlier in this post that there was no rule that enabled you to change a dog's score once it was scored. You can change it if it is the right thing to do and the majority of the cast agrees on it.

Yes Bullet, the cast can vote to overturn the judges decision at the time that the situation occurs and that is what goes on the card. We all know that is the rule. At that point, the dog is scored. Now, you leave that place, walk whatever distance to the river, find out why the dog was treeing and leaving repeatedly, I don't think there is anything in the rulebook that would allow the judge or cast to go back and wipeout all that minus.

MUST READ

My opinion...put down your score card, shoot the coon out, praise the dog for his/her determination and be proud of the hound. Then get the five to ten dollars for the coon hide and put some gas in your truck so you can keep hunting the rest of the night. Finally, after a very successful night of hunting you can go home sleep well and get up the next day and be ready and happy to go to work with a great story to tell. And you know when five o'clock rolls around you can cut the hounds with a big smile on your face and a heart full of excitement and anticipation. Pleasure hunting, you always have a story to tell and everything is between you, your dog, and nature.
