SMOKE X SHEBA

That will be a Great Cross right there! When I saw Smoke get unsnapped at MR. Ed Mauneys in Illinois back in the Fall and leave there running and slam a tree with the Coon several hundred yards away in just a few minutes I knew you had yourself another Good One! Good Looking hound with a Great Mouth too! He did it like Illinois was his home and that was his backyard. Impressive for a young hound and his first trip away from home. Sheba has already proven herself in the woods And the breeding pen I have heard the video of Sheba 11 and she has a mouth to Die for. In my opinion these pups will be great looking, huge mouths with a ton of hunt in them. Wish you the best with this cross Mr. Jack!!! Hope the huntings been good over your way and Mason and I will see you Saturday Night!

Smoke

Took Smoke out for a short run last night. Turned him down a spring fed branch and he went in abut 350 yrds and struck one of the coldest tracks that I have ever seen him fool with. He had a rough time with it, but he kept it moving toward the river. He moved it on in another 200 yrds and I told Odell that we had better get around closer to him, for if he got in next to the river I was going to catch him, as I didn't want him working a track like this there on the river next to the water. I don't mind them running a good track there for they will move it on out, but a bad track such as this one where a dog is moving slow in next to the water, and a lot of the time the dog is in the waters edge. The big gators will take them out, but tonight we didn't have to worry about it for when we got around next to the river Smoke was still a couple hundred yrds from the river and right after we stopped the 4-weelers He locked up treed. We rode to within about 50 yrds of him and walked on in to him. He was treed on a vine going up into a big oak. I could only get to where I could see some of one side of the tree. I never did see him, but I figured he was up in there somewhere. In this part of the country at this time of year if you don't have confidence in your dog, you are going to have some frustrating nights. We left there and went down to the boat landing and there in the sand we saw where a big Gator had crossed from the Lake to the river. I might have been the same one that we had seen the tracks of a few nights earlier. If not it was another big one. We called it a night.

Rough tree dogs

Yesterday Jeremy came by and picked up Smoke and traveled to Brookhaven, To the Ms. State Sanctioned Handler of the year hunt in which they have 6 per year I believe and the handler that has the most points at the end of the year is the handler of the year. I did not go with him, but he called later and asked me if I would guide a cast and I agreed. We Had a 4 dog cast 2 Bluetick females, 1 Walker female and 1 Bluetick male. We turned loose about 8:30. The bluetick male struck a pretty good track in about 150 yrds. and the others joined in. They moved it on in another 250 yrds and all dogs treed, at least for a minute. The walker female started getting rough. You could tell it was her by the voice that she had. In just a moment she was the only one there. I thought everyone had heard what was going on, but when we got to the tree the judge said he hadn't heard anything and I don't know why he didn't, but I know the Judge and he has judged me several times and he is a honest man. When we got to the tree she was the only one under the coon. We called time out. The Bluetick male was withdrawn by handler. We Went to the truck and moved on down the swamp. We cast the 3 females againThey went in and struck a cold track and started working it. They trailed it in about 400 yrds. one of the blue females was to the right and the walker was to the left of her and the other blue female was way left and back toward where we had cast them. The Blue female to the right treed and I know this female and have never seen her leave once she is treed, but when the walker dog got there it was over. We were to far to hear anything. The walker dog treed there for a minute and then she left it. The blue tick female came in to us and was withdrawn by handler. and the guy had caught the other blue female that had went back and withdrew her. The 2 minutes on tree had caught the walker female on tree and then the 8 minutes caught her on track. and we called time out with 40 min. left to hunt. We finally caught her before the hour time limit got her and took her on down the swamp and cast her alone. She went in and swung to the left and the handler said she was running the woods road that we were on. The guys that were riding on the back said they had spotted 9 coons going down the road 6 sitting in trees and 3 on the ground, but she never opened during time in. I hate to have to write anything like this and notice I didn't mention anyones name, The Walker female's owner is a friend of mine and the next time I see him I will say something to him. I think a lot of the time Gudges or cast members don't say anything about these rough treedogs because a lot of the time they are friends with the owner and/or they just don't want to hurt anyones feelings. Well its time we stand up and hurt some feelings Wheather its in the nite hunts or this country we live in. By the way I was not a member of the cast above. I was only the guide.

I have seen it.

I certainly respect the fact that you are going to talk to the owner. It seems to me when I have come across them guiding or hunting if the owners know they will fuss the loudest then withdraw the mean hound that is going to get caught blaming the other dogs. I have seen this more form the state hunts when other kc hounds are brought. I agree with your solution and am glad you are doing something about it. Good luck and I enjoy your posts. Lance

Smoke

Took Smoke out for a run tonight. Dropped him off an ole woods road into a Cypress Slough. He went in about 200 yrds and struck a good track, ran it on in about another 300 yrds and treed. We went around on another road. I thought he was on the other side of the slough. We walked in to him and he was treed up an oak tree. There was 3 branches of the slough that came togeather in there and he was right in the middle of them. I crossed one of them and got to where I could see the tree from one side and hit the squaller and he looked at me. We walked back to the 4-wheelers and went on down the swamp. Dropped him bak on the same slough farther down and he went in about 250 yrds and struck a cold track and started working it. He went up the slough about 100 yrds and crossed the woods road that we were on over into some 20 year old planted pines. He went on through the pines for about 300 yrds and treed. We went on around the woods road and crossed a field and got to about 100 yrds of him and walked on in. He was treed up a pine with several vines in it, but they had grown so tight to the tree that you couldn't shake any of them. There were also several other trees around it and the vines extended out into them. I couldn't get him to look, but I was pretty sure that he was there. We left there and went around to the sunken swamp and turned him in there. He went in about 300 yrds and Treed. He never did open on the ground. We walked in to him and he was tree up three small trees that grew togeather. I shined for a bit, but I don't think this one was there. We leashed him up and walked back to the 4-wheelers and called it a night. I would have took some pictures, but I had forgotten to charge my camera.

Sheba 11

Took Sheba 11 out for a short run tonight. Turned her down a branch that runs through the swamp. She went in a little over 300 yrds and made a circle and came back, Never got a bark. I loaded her up and went on down the swamp and dropped her off the ole woods road into a dried up slough bed. She went in about 200 yrds and struck a cold track. Worked it on up the slough another 300 yrds and treed. We walked in to her and she was treed up a big oak beside the slough. I tried to shine it, but there was some other big trees around it and I couldn't see anything. It was sure hot out there tonight and the humidity was so high that you could hardly breath. I leashed her up and walked back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.

CORN

Tracking getting tougher for these hounds MR. Jack. Heat and the Full Moon have them stirring late. Wondering if you have any good corn patches over your way that coon might be hitting? Sure would like to bring one of these young ones for a good corn field race one night. Or you bring one this way and we will run them out of the Berry Briars and back into the Swamp. I will give you a call tomorrow. I'm going to be over your way at the Vet getting Bam and Bob their yearly Boosters, Take Care and Good Hunting!

Sheba 11

Took Sheba 11 out for a run tonight. Dropped her off an ole woods road into a wet Cypress Bottom. She went in about 200 yrds and just treed, didn't open at all on the ground. I walked in to her and she was treed up a pretty good sized oak.. It was thick with other trees in there and you couldn't see anything. I leashed her up and we walked back to the truck and unloaded the 4wheeler and moved on down the swamp. I turned her loose in the same bottom about 200 yrds farther down. She went in about 300 yrds and started to circle back up toward where we had left the truck. She came out on the road about 50 yrds from where I had parked the truck and came down the road. I thought she was going to come on down to me, but she went into the woods and made another 400 yrd circle and never barked. After she made the circle this time she came on in and I loaded her up and went to the sunken swamp. I turned her in there and she went in a couple of hundred yrds and struck a working track, moved it on in another 300 yrds and locked up treed. I walked in to her and she was treed up another pretty good size oak. It had several vines in it. I did find one spot that I could see part of the tree. I would shine some and go in and shake a vine, but I could not get him to look. I went in under the tree and got on another vine and started shaking it hard and about that time I heard something hit the ground about 15 yrds from the tree. I looked and a big coon had jumped out and hit the ground. Sheba was treeing so hard that she never heard him hit the ground. The coon took off, but Sheba never did see him. I led her over to where he had hit the ground and she started throwing a fit wanting to get loose. I debated to myself on wheather to turn her loose or not, but I did and she took off and ran him into about a knee deep branch that runs through the swamp. I don't know what the coon did when he hit that running water, unless he just swam down the branch without touching the sides, because she made several circles and went up and down that branch a long ways, but she never could pick him up. After a while I called her in and loaded her up and called it a night.

Steve, Coonhunting sure seems to be getting tougher, of course I think I say that every year about this time. Steve right now I don't even know where there is a small garden with corn in it. People over here have about quit planting corn on account of the hogs. There was a guy tellin me the other day that they were planting some corn some where around here, but I don't know yet where its at. I will have to check on it.

Mr. Jack, you got to tell me how you take such good pictures. What kind of camera do you use? I know it can't be a cell phone camera.

Sheba 11

I took Sheba 11 out for a short run tonight. I got to the swamp and discovered I had left my Tracking Collar at the house. I started to run her without it,but I have done this a time or two and decided it was not worth all the worry, so I turned around and went back to the house and got my Tracking Collar. I know there would be a lot less coonhunters in this world today if we had to go back to hunting like we use to without tracking collars. After I got back with my tracking collar I went in next to the river and turned her up an ole dry slough bed. She went in a ways and struck a cold track and started working it. She moved it on in about 300 yrds and locked up treed. I went around on another road and drove the 4-wheeler to within about 15 feet of her. I had treed in this spot before and use to see the coon here pretty regular, but it is next to about a 5 year cut over and the vines has the trees so wrapped up that you cant see anything. We didn't find the coon so we decided to call it a night. We had got a late start.

Tommy, Thank you for the kind words on my pictures. Steve is the only fellow that I know that can take pictures with his Cell Phone and make them look right. I use a small Kodak 35mm. That has a Zoom lens on it. My girl friend gave this one to me. She started using bigger and better cameras and gave me her old one. I don't know where she got it at. Its just a small camera, about the size of a cell phone

Smoke and Sheba 11

Chris came by about 10 oclock tonight and we loaded up Smoke and Sheba 11 and headed to the swamp. We dropped them off an ole woods road into a wet bottom. They went in about 200 yrds and hit a pretty good track, moved him on down the swamp another 400 yrds and locked up treed. We went around on another road and got to within about 50 yrds of where they were treed. We walked in to them and they were treed up a hard wood tree going up into a pine. We shined for a bit and I walked in and pulled a vine. we didn't see the coon, but both of us heard him jump out. The dogs didn't hear him hit the ground and that was alright with me, because I really didn't want a jump out race where we were at, so we leashed the dogsand came on out. We moved on down the swamp a ways and turned them loose. They went through the swamp a ways and hit another woods road and ran it for about a half a mile. Now I really don't like for my dogs to do this and I will try to be ready for it next time. There are some pretty good woods up next to the Black Top and they struck a coon there and trailed it in about 300 yrds and treed. They were tree just off an ole woods road so we rode to within a few feet of the tree. They were treed up a big oak. We shined the tree for a few minutes and Chris Climbed up on top of his 4-wheeler so he could see better and he saw the coon, but the coon quit looking and I went in and shook a vine and I heard a lot of shuffling going on and Chris was saying something. I walked out to where he was at and he was off the 4-wheeler and he said the coon had almost jumped on top of him. The dogs heard this one and the race was on. Chris said it was a small coon, so I figured it was a small sow coon with little ones in the area. We had us a good racefor about 600 yrds and they turned and came back a ways and treed out in the middle of some 2o yr. old pines. We made our way in to them. We shined for a while and I'm pretty sure he was there some where, but we couldn't get to where we could see the top. We leashed the dogs and made our way back out and called it a night.

Hunts

I enjoy reading your hunting stories and the pictures. That Sheba II female looks like she is a nice one. Being a half sister to Creek makes me like her even more. I can't wait until next year when I here the Gin II stories!!
Getting ready to head down to Iowa with Creek and have some fun at the Zone 3 hunt in Nashua, Iowa. I am looking forward to it. It will be Creeks first time in a Grnite cast but she should do fine I think.
I am going to pick up Nail and bring her home also. Banjo is going to stay down in Iowa for awhile longer before he comes home.
Keep those stories and pictures coming!

Take Care,
Scott

Smoke and Sheba 11

Chris came by about 10 oclock tonight and we loaded up Smoke and Sheba and headed to the swamp. We dropped them off an ole woods road into a cypress bottom. They hit a pretty good track and probably didn't go 50 yrds and locked a tree up. We walked in to them and they were treed up a big oak. I took a few pictures and by the time I was through taking pictures Chris had found the coon. We wanted to get one out on the dogs, but we were afraid it might be a sow coon with little ones some where, so we decided to leave this one and if it was a sow coon, to raise her little ones. We walked back to the 4 wheelers and moved on down to the sunken swamp. We turned them in there and they went in a couple hundred yrds and struck a working track and moved it on in another 200 yrds and locked up treed. We rode around to within about 20 yrds of them and they were treed up a large oak growing out of the top of the 20 ft. bluff going down into the sunken swamp, as you can see in the two pictures above, there was no way two dogs could get on this tree at the same time so they were having to take turns. Chris found the coon while I was taking pictures, but we left this one to run again also. We walked back to the 4-wheelers and called it a night.

Scott, thanks for the kind words on the stories and pictures. I enjoy writing them. Sheba 11 has made a nice hound and we are real proud of her. I am seeing her do some good things. We will be putting her in the hunts soon. I told Chris to night that if I made the hunts like I use too she would be well on her way to grand by now. Scott, be careful and the best of luck to you and Creek at the Zone 3 Hunt in Iowa.

Smoke

Took Smoke out for a short run tonight. Turned him off an ole woods road into a wet bottom and he went in about 200 yrds and struck a working track moved it outanother 200 yrds and locked up treed. I started in to him and had to cross a slough that was almost over my boots, a lot of Cypress and Cypress knees in there. I made it on to him and he was treed up a big pine. It had a lot of other trees around it and I could never get to where I could see the top. I'm pretty sure he was there, but I never did get to where I could see him. We moved on down to the Sunken Swamp and turned him in there and he went in a ways and struck a cold track, Moved it on out another 500 yrds and got it going pretty good and got into a cutover that was nothing but briars and vines from the ground to about 10 feet up and he worked in there going around and round for about 45 minutes and I got him out of there and we called it a night.

Sheba 11

Took Sheba 11 out for a run tonight. Turned her down a spring fed branch That runs through the swamp. She went down it about 300 yrds and struck a working track, she moved it south down the branch a ways and turned north up a sloughfor about 500 yrds and crossed the slough, at least I thought she had crossed the slough. I knew she started having some trouble with the track, but she kept it moving, like I said I thought she was across the slough, but the slough in there where she was at is about 150 yrds wide. When we are getting a lot of rain the water in there gets pretty deep, but right now its kind of low. Its from 1 to 3 feet and some places deeper with about 6 to12 inches of mud on bottom and be careful not to step in a stump hole. Like I said I thought she was treed across the slough so I went around to the other side and she was closer to that side, but she was still about 75 yrds out in the slough. I waded out to her. Just above the picture the tree forked and made 2 trees. They didn't have any limbs until about 3/4 of the way up and then it was real thick. Right there where she was knawing was a hollow and that's where I figured the coon was, so I leashed her up and we started to make our way back out of there. I only shot one Moccasin while I was wadding back out of there. He was swimming toward us and had gotten pretty close when I saw him and he didn't act like he was going to move out of the way, so I took him out with the rifle. We waded on out of there and went on in toward another slough and turned Sheba loose and she went on in 200 yrds and struck another working track and started moving it out. She went on in another 300 yrds and treed. I went to her and she was treed up a big oak. You could only see about 20 feet up it and it was wrapped up with vines and other trees and I couldn't find any where that I could see any part of the tree. Sheba was beginning to get hot so I leashed her up. We walked back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.
