Took my Smoke/Jazzy pup out for the first time tonite with the intention of walking him around while the old dog hunted. Boy, was I fooled. He took off right off the tailgate with the old dog. The old (100% straight) dog struck about 250 yards in and ran it around the lake bank. At about 350, my pup opened, ran the track with the old dog like he had done it all his life. I said to myself, he is running the dog but at least he is running!! I was wrong about that too. They drove it 1.1 miles to a hole. When they hit the hole, both dogs hushed. The old dog came back. NO PUP! At this point I'm nervous because I didn't have a garmin on him. Hell, he didn't even have a name tag!I drove around looking for him and found him 30 minutes later 300 yards up the ridge alone in the opposite direction of where I found the old dog. Whew! was I glad to see him. I truly believe that if he had been running the old dog, he would have been with the old dog when I got him. He will have a tracker on next time I unsnap him, lol! You are right, Smoke pups are NOT afraid of the dark!

I know this is a bit lengthy, but D*** im excited!

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, he just turned 5 months old yesterday!

Shannon that's great news and you have all the rights to be xcited buddy and to Just think he's still a baby !!
The reports on Smoke's pups has been very very encouraging, One thing they will do is Gooooo get in the dark and got plenty of VOLUME ! We are grateful to have bred some Top quality females, Quality beats QUANITY and It takes 2 for the equation n Smoke will do his part !!!

We aren't used to all this frigid cold weather down my way. Wind chills have been in the single digits almost this whole week and we have gotten some snow in the mix last weekend and again tomorrow.

We took Swag out this past Monday night by himself. It's his time to be singled out and be pushed. He managed one den by himself but those was the only barks we heard all night. Now i'll admit- he's a little tight on the ground but the coons just haven' been stirring around here this week. Also, this is the first time he's ever seen any snow his whole life! We didn't have any last year and as far as I know, this is the first he's ever seen. Needless to say it doesn't slow him down any and we had to go deep to get him when we were ready to go. He doesn't have any brakes. When the weather calms down a bit, we will be back on the 4-5 night/week deal.

I'm looking forward to hunting with ya'll soon! We sent in our registration for all three nights at SETWD for Clyde.

Maybe Swag needs to head north to see what real snow is like!

Finally had a break in the weather last night. We have been hunting Swag by himself over the last week despite very cold temps and the snow. He's done pretty well considering he's more or less just a pup. Last was the first "good" night we have had in probably 3 weeks to hunt even though it was a full moon.

On the first drop, Swag struck first and was ahead of the other dogs by about 100 yards. He kept the track going up the creek and circled back to where my two old dogs had treed then he blew out of the country! My old dogs treed up a big pine and after shining it we led the dogs off the tree and listened and we heard him deep! We eased towards him and he came treed by himself and was flat spitting it out! We walked about .7 miles to him all by himself and he was treed in a coon hotel on the side of a steep bank! He stayed treed for about 30 minutes while we worked to him despite snow/ice still on the shady sides of the hill. Two trees had grown together as you can see in the picture and it was full of holes. Every time I leave the camera in the truck, the thing does good. I apologize for the picture quality- they were taken with the phone.

On the next drop, Swag and Clyde hunted a small stretch of timber and we caught them when they came back by us. My other dog struck in a pine patch and we turned them into her. Swag blew out again but it turned out, he was ahead. My old dogs worked the track the direction he went and he circled around back to them and the dogs got back together. Swag treed first about 500 yards from where they struck and they had a boar coon on the outside of a den. He is tight on the ground but so far he is accurate!



He looked like a million bucks tonight. His voice is changing and he was quite the tree dog tonight.

Speaking of smoke pups and results. We got a late start last night but decided to take Swag out by himself for a little while. We didn't do anything on the first drop- he got after a cold track and I picked him up before he crossed a road. On the second drop, we set him up a creek coming out of the mountain but he wheeled around and got through the country. He worked a track up a big creek and back up on a ridge back towards the truck and got hooked on a viney tree. It looked slick except for one big nest out on a limb that just happened to have a big grape vine grown directly into it. I told my buddy to pull on it as hard as he could. As soon as he did, a coon shot out of the nest and out on a limb!!! A tree shaka on nearly a full moon night in January.

Swag is 14 months old and has really been progressing well over the last two weeks. He is starting to look classy on the tree. Swag is tight on the ground- He will bark enough to get struck and most of the time strikes ahead of the other dogs but you aren't going to hear much out of him after that until he trees. One thing about him though- he is ridiculously accurate. If he trees, it's something there. He has no brakes (I don't think they put any on that model), takes off on a dead run even by himself, is ridiculously independent and pretty much fearless. He should have came with a set of earplugs- He is LOUD. He might not finish like this but he's on the right track for now.

We haven't learned to pose like Mike, Dan and Smoke

He's doing great. Haven't really completely singled him out yet but runs and trees and absolutely blows the top out . Will not honor another dog if the coon ain't there. Bawl on track and a extreme chop on tree. Keep em going boys We really enjoying what SMOKE is reproducing Hunters hunting dogs outa Smoke are seeing and are proving this !
