If a owner believes that his or her stud dog is worthy of a high stud fee then I believe they are entitled to their opinion. It's up to the public to decide if they want to pay it. The market will take care of itself usually. If the stud fee gets set to high, the owners will reduce the fee eventually.
Over the years, I have had several people call wanting to breed to a dog I was hunting. When asked about a stud fee, I immediately asked $500. In my opinion, if that guy thinks enough to pay $500 to breed his female, she must not be junk. Most people want to hunt with a stud before they breed to him, but you don't ever get to hunt with their female.
More times than not, once the female was bred, and the fee was due, I dropped the fee to $200 or a pup. Unless the female being bred or the female's owner was questionable, then I stick to my guns of $500.
If you want to experience some fun, offer a dog to the public for stud. You will be lied to so much that you come to expect it.
