Sheba and Sheba 11

Chris and his son Cody came bylast night and picked up Ole Sheba and Sheba 11and went to the swamp. Chris said Sheba 11 kind of showed out in front of her mother. They had struck a pretty good track and they went about 100 yrds and ole Sheba locked up treed, but Sheba 11 kept going and Mama soon figured it out that daughter had the coon and had to turn loose and catch up, but Chris had to catch them off of this one when they crossed the highway. They went on down in the swamp and struck another one and they really had a race out of this one. Chris said ole Sheba was really having to work to stay with Daughter, but I will have to say in ole Sheba's defence that she had not been out of the pen in several weeks and is way over weight. After about a 1 mile race crossing the creek a couple of times and through a cutover they treed the coon and Cody shot it out to them. It was well deserved. Neither dog had had one in several weeks. Chris and Cody had both gotten wet in the creek so they called it a night. I went out and fed up a little while ago and ole Sheba was all stove up and Sheba 11 was bouncing aroud like she had never been hunting. That's what age will do for you. I sure hate to see a good dog get old, but that's the way the good lord set it up. Good hunting.

Thanks for the congrats Steve. I hope you and Ole Bo are about to get healed up.

Smoke and Ann

Sleepy called the other day and said he would be in school in this area and would like to bring his dog and hunt a few nights. I told him to come on. He brought Ann and his 4-wheeler by Sunday evening and left them here, and went on to Magee, Ms. to school. He came back down yesterday when he got out of school and we loaded up Ann and Smoke, and then Sleepy told me we had a problem. He had forgotten his 4-wheeler key at the motel room. I told him we didn't have a problem, He had one. I had my 4-wheeler LOL. We left the 4-wheelers at the house and headed to the swamp. We struck the first coon and had a good race for probably 600 yrds and treed. We went around on another road and walked in to them. They were treed up a large oak on the edge of the slough. It didn't take us long to figure out that he had made it home. It had a large hole about half way up. We petted them up and moved on down the swamp and turned them loose again. They struck pretty quick. Steve I think this was the two mile coon. The dogs ran him down the slough for a ways and headed for the river. Sleepy mentioned that he ain't never seen coons run like this. Both dogs had bumped up a couple of times and moved on. They got to the river and turned north up river. I knew they were in bad stuff, not only thick, but also back water from the river. Did they tree him? NO. It finaly broke down to just a bark every now and then. Sleepy had to get back, he had to be in school early, so we went in and got them. If the rain holds off we will try them again tonight.

TWO MILE BANDIT

MR. Jack I have sure missed us running the Two Mile Bandit and Ole Rocket. This foot messed up almost all of February and will get March to. Then the leaves will be on the trees, getting hot and snakes all over. I have silently cussed myself Many times. But the Good News, if you wanna look at it that way, is I'm unemployed right now so when this foot heals I'm going to get these potlickers and myself in shape chasing Coons, Turkeys and Fishing. I told Mr. Ed yesterday if I run out of money to buy dog food I was just gonna sell off some of Beverly's things so we can keep the hounds fed, starting with that ring she got for Christmas, lol! Just Kidding. I have some jobs lined up when I get well, a cousin wants me to build them a Pavilion for an Outdoor Kitchen and a couple other small jobs. I'm going to live the good, poor life for a while and enjoy it. I have done got to old and broke down to go off and work all day then come home and coon hunt at night, just can't do it anymore. So I will just hunt. You and Sleepy have a good time hunting and good luck on treeing the Bandit!

Sheba 11

Sleepy came by tonight and picked up Ann and his 4-wheeler. It had rained for about an hour late this afternoon and had quit. I asked Sleepy if he wanted to try it and he said no, he didn't want to get wet, so after he left I loaded up Sheba 11 and headed for the swamp. I went over in front of my house. I went through the front gate of my deer plot and when I got to the back gate, there was a deer standing there like he wanted me to open the gate so it could come into the plot. During the season I keep corn out over there and I leave the back gate open and the deer come and go through the gate at least some of them do, others just jump the fence or come through the barbed wire. I got a small horse that I keep over there after season closes. There is an ole slough that keeps water in it most of the year right behind the deer plot and the deer had only moved a few feet away when I opened the back gate and kind of slowly waded across the slough about 20 yards away. Sheba was watching the deer closely and I decided this would be a good time to check her out, so I unsnapped her and away she went toward the deer. I got the shocker ready, but when she got to where the deer had left from she smelled around a little and headed on down the slough. She went on down the slough about 150 yrds and struck. I still wasn't real sure she hadn't decided to run the deer. She moved the track on in another 200 yrds and locked up treed. I got yhe 4-wheeler and rode in to her. She was treed up a huge oak. I took a few pictures and then found the coon sitting in a fork about 3/4 of the way up. We left it to run again and headed to the river. I dropped her off on a branch and never got a bark. I loaded her back up and went on down to the river and dropped her off on an ole slough. She went in about 150 yrds and struck and moved it on in about another 75 yrds and treed. I went in to her and I spotted it before I got there. She had a big slick tail sitting in a small tree. I got the shocker out and loaded up on her this time. She came to me on the run and we loaded up and called it a night. That will give her something to think about.

Mr Jack,

I enjoy reading the hunt details about swamp hunting. Gators out getting exercise yet? Remember the stories Mr Jerry told me about the big gators next to the fence and his house dog treeing on it.

Mr. Jack I'm heading on back home I would like to thank you again and look like they won't me to come back for another week and help them catch up. If the water goes down quick we might can get together and try again. If not I'll be going look around on a hunting lease that one of the guys run for the company they found out I like to coonhunt and the gate is open for me anytime. Another week away from the house I been thinking about selling my bospheh gyp, if you no of any one calling looking give them my number, thanks.

Being Lazy

Tommy, I'm doing fine, with all the rain we have had, which I'm sure that you know about. saw the pictures where your kennels were floating around. I think Pearl river was suppose to crest today, but looks like we got plenty more rain coming in today. With all this water I haven't been hunting much and haven't had much to talk about. I was keeping an eye on you and Steve through your threads on here. I hope you made it through with out too much damage. Thanks for thinking about me, maybe all this water will be down soon and we can all get back to hunting.

I'm glad to hear everything is well with you. I am high and dry where I live, but Rhett, my son, is the one that got the water. The pictures were taken at his house.

Tommy, I was checking Pearl River this morning, Looks like it has dropped out real fast. There will be a lot of mud, but I believe I will be able to get back to hunting this week. Now we will only have to worry about the mosquitos, Snakes and aligators, but we've always had to contend with that in this part of the country in the summertime, and the leaves are getting thick again. Good luck to you guys and your hounds. I'm sure you hunt about the same terrain that I hunt.

Mr. Ed everything is fine down here. I haven't been on here much because I haven't been able to hunt, because of all the water. Looks like I'll be able to get back after it tonight. Hope you have been able to get out some. I hope you and Mrs. Mary had a great Easter. I'm going to catch up with ole Steve before long and check that foot out.

HUNTING

Glad to hear the water is going down over your way Mr. Jack. But more rain on the way mid week. I haven't been hunting in over 6 weeks but all my stuff is on charge right now and I'm going tonight. Foot still giving trouble but I can make it to the tree I believe just going to be slow going. My 4 wheeler is down with a bad starter I believe. Need to get a test light to be for sure so will be hunting out of the Kubota until 4 wheeler is fixed. Give me a shout after this next round of rain moves out and we will meet up and cut them loose.

Marty Mailes was up for a hunt. He had his Rattler x Flo pup, Mack. Mack is going to make a nice one. Cory has done good with his hounds but the hounds don't even come close to the job him and Jo has done with those two boys. Treed 5 trees with coon and a couple den trees.

Smoke

Took Smoke out for a run tonight. He has not been out in about 3 weeks due to all the rain and flooding we have had. Smoke didn't seem like the lay off hurt him any. I dropped him off an ole woods road into an ole slough that had been flooded by the river. The river water was gone now leaving a wet muddy mess. Smoke went in a ways and turned south up the swamp and went in about 350 yrds and struck a fair track and moved it on in about 300 yrds and treed. We walked in to him and he was treed up a small oak tree. There was a big ole coon sitting right in the top. I petted Smoke up some and we left this one to run again. We moved on down the swamp aways and I turned Smoke into the same slough and he went in about 600 yrds and struck a working track and started moving it out. He worked this track for a little over 1.5 miles and worked him into the sunken swamp and treed. We had rode the 4-wheelers right up under the first tree and we did this one the same way. When we got around to the back side of the sunken swamp Smoke was treed just at the foot of the bluff. He was treed up the oak in the picture above. We would not have found this one if the tree had not had some vines on it. We finally got him to look and I gave Smoke this one. He had done a good job. We loaded up and called it a night.

Smoke

Took Smoke out for a run tonight. The wind was blowing pretty good and there were some Tornado warnings out, but other than that it was a pretty good night, at least the rain hasn't got here yet. Dropped smoke off an ole woods road into a slough. He headed south and then East and then turning North @ about 650 yards he hit a working track and started moving it West down another slough. We went around on another road so we could hear better as the wind was blowing pretty good. We got around on the other road where I figured we would be closer and we were still about 600 yrds from Smoke and he was still moving West. I keep saying we, so I had better tell who is hunting with me. It is my neighbor from down the road. His name is Odell Ballard and he hunts with me from time to time when no one else is going. He is not really a coon hunter and does not own a dog. He would not take a dog if I gave him one, but he loves dogs and he feeds and takes care of my dogs when I am away from home. When I had open heart surgery I don't know what I would have done without him. Back to my hunt. While we were sitting there Smoke treed. He was a little over 600 yrds in and we started to him. We rode the 4-wheelers to within about 150 yrds and walked on in. Smoke was treed up the tree that you see in the picture above. The top picture you can see the coons eye. The tree that smoke was treed in was leaning out over the slough into another tree out on the other side and the coon was sitting in that tree. In the bottom picture you can really see where he was treed at. Normally that tree is sitting right at the edge of the slough and leaning out into another tree on the other side, but with all the water we have now there is several feet of water all around the clay root. I took a few pictures and left this one to run again. We went back up the swamp aways and turned Smoke loose again. He went in about 150 yrds and struck a pretty good track. He came up out of the swamp and crossed the woods road that we were on and headed into the 20 year old planted pines and went in about 350 yrds and started breaking down some and I knew that he was in bad country. He was about 600 yrds from us ahd it was getting hard to hear him. We were on higher ground and the wind was blowing harder and I told Odell we had better get closer. We went around on another road and when I stopped to listen he was treed. We had to go around on a couple of different roads, but we got to abour 75 yrds of him and walked on in to him. He was treed up a huge pine, and you couldn't get to where you could see any of the tree, but I was pretty sure he had him. I petted him up and we called it a night.
