Smoke

Took Smoke out for a run last night. Dropped him off an ole woods road and he went in about 350 yrds and struck a pretty good track, moved it in another 200 yrds and treed. I went around on another road and he was treed about 50 yrds off of it. I walked in to him and he was treed up a small oak going up into a larger one and I found the coon pretty quick sitting up in the larger oak. I petted him up some and we left this one to run again. Move on down the road a piece and turned loose again, He went in about 500 yrds and struck a cold track and moved it across a slough and on in 200 yrds and treed. I had to go around to a colvert to get across the slough and came back down on the other side. He was treed up a huge Oak next to a deer plot.I shined, but if he was there I never could get him to look. The tree had a lot of big limbs and still had a lot of leaves on it, so I figured he was hiding up in there some where. We loaded up and moved on down toward the river and turned loose again. He went in about 30 yrds and struck a working track and moved it on in and was getting in a lot of backwater. I moved in closer to him and when I saw where he was at I called him off, because he was fixing to get into a lot of water. We loaded up and called it a night.

Gin and Smoke

Jeremy and me loaded up Gin and Smoke and traveled to Bay Springs, Ms. last night to their State Handler of the year hunt. We had a good time there. I hunted Smoke and I will be the first one to say He sure needs a younger handler behind him. We went to the National Forest and the first turn loose they struck a track and a walker female went one way and Smoke and the other two waalkers went the other way. They kept getting farther apart and finally they were all getting out of hearing in different directions and the judge called time out so we all had an hour to get our dogs and get back to the truck. Smoke and the two with him were over 800 yrds and going the other way. It was pretty windy last night with this cold front coming in or we could have probably could have heard them better. We headed after them and got them and made it back before the hour time limit expired, but needless to say I was done in, so I withdrew Smoke with an hour and a half left to hunt. Gin won her cast, but another cast came in with more points.

Jack, as much as we enjoy competition hunts, I have about threw in my hat for the hunts. I do however enjoy treeing a few coon with a good hound as much as I ever did.

Isn't Smoke out of Cory's Rattler dog? Most of the hounds I have enjoyed hunting the past 20 years were from Ruby or grand pups to her. Never hunted a hound any tougher than Chief's Joe. Old Lucy was sure enough was a coon catcher, Flo can do it quick, Irene is possibly the best coon catcher I have ever had my lead on. She can look unbeatable but can look like a serum dog too often.

Dennis I know what you are talking about. I enjoy coonhunting as much as ever and I can still walk pretty good as long as it is on flat ground and I don't try to push it to hard, now the hills will get me pretty quick. I use to live for those competition hunts, but as Mr. Frank Erwin use to say(I aint near as mad at them coons as I use to be). I use to play softball a lot. We played the outlaw turnaments all around and I loved the game about as much as I did coonhunting. I remember the last Turnament that I played in. It had been over a year since I had picked up a softball and they were having a tournament near here one Saturday and some of the guys that I had played with before wanted to go and enter it, so we did. We played softball all day and it was over a year before I could lift my right arm up level with my shoulder. I knew it was time to quit. I think my competition hunting is getting close to that time.

Dennis, Smoke is out of Cory Mailes Rattler dog and Gr.Nite Ch. Racket Ridge Weezie. He's about 18 Months old and making a pretty nice hound. They all have their good nights and bad nights. It would be great if we just knew which nights that was going to be.

Mr. Jack, In your opinion, do you feel it is as hard to finish a dog now, compared to 20 years ago? I just want to know your feelings on this.

Tommy, it's a lot easier to finish a dog now than it was 20 years ago. There is a lot more hunts now and the hunts are a lot smaller. Now days if you win your cast in a regular UKC hunt. You usually have a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place win. The hunts 20 to 30 years ago was a lot bigger and they would give places to the top ten cast winners. I haven't even heard of anyone winning a 5th place unless it was at a major hunt in years. Back when I started competition hunting there was not many hunts around. If you went to 1 hunt a month you had to do a lot of traveling.

Thanks Mr. Jack
I started back in the comp hunts about 2 years ago. Before that the last hunt I entered a dog in was about 25 years ago. I remember there being anywhere from 20 - 40 dogs. And some really tough one too.

Tramp and Smoke

Chris came by yesterday evening and we loaded up Tramp and Smoke and headed to the swamp, dropped them off an ole woods road and they went in about 300 yrds and struck a working track and started working it out of there. they worked the track and got it moving and headed toward the river which was about a mile and a half away. when they got to the river they turned north up river and went on for about 200 more yrds and fail treed. We got to about 200 hundred yrds of them on the 4-wheelers and walked on in to them. They were treed up a large white oak. We shined, but I think they just missed him. We walked back out to the 4-wheelers and called it a night.

Mr Jack

Glad to see your getting in the woods. It is good to hear that you are treeing some up. We have some cold weather rolling back in for the weekend with a high Sunday of -2. Sent Banjo and Nail down South today. I am hoping we can get some more females bred to him down there before his health gets any worse. Nail will be able to get in the woods until she comes in heat. I hope everything is going well and happy hunting.

Take Care,
Scott

GOOD HUNTING

Enjoyed the hunt last night Mr. Jack. Looking forward to the next time we get after Rocket or The Two Mile Bandit. Tramp and Bo sure poured it to him for 30 minutes or so in Black Branch Swamp. Tramp stretched out on this tree sure looks good, Take Care and talk to you soon.

Smoke

Chris came by last night and picked up Smoke and took him out for a run. A couple hours later he called me nd asked if I could come get him. He said that he was bogged down in the creek. I picked at him and told him looked like he was in for a long walk, and then I told him that I was writing on the computer and it would probably take a couple more hours for me to get through, but as soon as I got through I would be on to get him. It was pretty cold last night and I knew that he was probably pretty wet being bogged down in the creek, He knew that I was just messing with him. I would have been with him but I normally don't hunt on sunday night. I put my hunting clothes on and went to him. Smoke was treed about a thousand yards up the creek. We got him out of the creek and went to Smoke. He said Smoke had struck a good track and had been treed in there for over an hour. We went around on an ole dummyline and walked on in to him. He was treed up a Large White Oak den tree. We squalled and shinned for a while, but he had made it home. We walked back to the 4-wheeler and they went on and turned smoke loose again and I came on back to the house.

Steve, I sure enjoyed our hunt, I always do. We seem to always have a good hunt when we get tramp and Bo togeather. Tell Mrs. Beverly that I sure did enjoy that supper, It was good. Looking forward to next time. sure sorry about the Winter Classic deal.

Scott, everything is going good hear. I don't know how you guys make it up there with a -2 degrees weather. Sure sorry to hear about banjo's health. Hope everything works out well on the other thing that we talked about. Good hunting.

Tramp and Sheba 11

Took these two out for a run tonight. Turned them off an ole woods road into the swamp. they went in about 250 yrds and struck a working track. Did a good job moving it in another 500 yrds, bumped up one time, but moved on. They kept warming the track up and moved him into what I call the sunken swamp, and moved on in a ways and Tramp locked up with little Sheba right on his heels. You talkin about a racket. Tramp has got a good mouth on him and Sheba has got a big mouth on her, and that little girl is a tree dog. I don't know what kind of tree it was. I thing it was a hugh white oak. The coon ad made it home. It was a big den tree. I had my rifle with me and I was going to knock it out to Sheba, but he wii be there to run next time. I turned loose again and they hunted out about 800 yrds with out striking and I picked them up on another road. I turned them loose again andthey did about the same thing and I picked them up and called it a night.

Anderson's Blue Jake

I drew Mr. Anderson and Jake at the Fall Round up one time. I was hunting my Doll 11 female. Jake and Doll hunted good. We were hunting in a place where I had drew the night before and we could never get on anything. About half way through the hunt I withdrew and went back to the club house. The next day I found out that they did tree a coon after I left and Jake won the cast. Jake hunted good and looked like a nice dog and Mr. Anderson was a great guy.

Smoke

Chris and Clayton and two of their boys came by last night and picked up Smoke. Clayton was the owner of Smoke before I got him and he had not hunted with Smoke since I got him. They left to go hunting about 7 oclock. I was sitting here playing on the computer about 11 oclock and the phone rang. It was Chris, He was telling me about their hunt. They had made 3 trees, with 2 coons each up the first two trees and a den tree on the last track. The first track he had to hunt out over 900 yrds to get struck. Then he told me the real reason he called. They had the Rhino bogged down. Chris also had his side by side, but it would not go into 4-wheel drive and would not pull the Rhino out. I jokingly told him that it looked like they were going to have a long cold walk. Last night was the coldest night we have had this year. Then I told him that I would be there shortly. I made it to them and they sure had it stuck. We had to hook the winch off my 4-wheeler to the Rhino and Chris had to hook up to the back of me to keep me from sliding and winched the Rhino out. Clayton told me that Smoke was sure making a nice hound and he sure was not a fraid to get in the dark and go hunting. We called it a night. I got to about 50 yrds of the house and I passed a Game Warden and he turned around and stopped me, But he was a nice guy. He asked me what we were doing and I told him we were coonhunting, and as soon as he seen who it was he told me to go ahead and to have a nice night.

Tramp & Sheba 11

Took these two out last night for a run. Dropped them off the side of an ole woods road and they went in about 250 yrds and struck a working track and moved it on in another 200 yrds and treed in the side of a creek bluff. I went to them and got them, and moved on down the swamp and cast them again down the side of an ole slough. They went in about 400 yrds and struck a cold track and worked it on up the slough and got into about a 30 acre 6 yr 0ld planted pines and that was a rough place to be. They worked it on through there and started on in toward the river. They never made it to the river before they treed. all to geather it was about 1100 yrds. I went around on the river side and drove the 4-wheeler to within 30 yrds of them. They had treed up a small oak and I found the coon pretty quick. Those two hounds were making a racket. I hadn't shot one out on either hound in a while, so I gave them this one. I petted tem up and we went back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.

A welcome guest

I was sitting here piddling on the computer yesterday when the phone rung. I picked it up and the voice on the other end said. This is Craig Edwards. Although Mr. Edwards and I had spoken on the phone a few times through the years and passed notes back and forth on the computer. It was still a great surprise. Mr. Edwards said that he was preaching in Meridian, Ms. Which is about 2 hours away, and he said that he would like to come by and visit. I told him that I would sure like to meet him and he said that he would be here in a little while. In a couple of hours Mr. Edwards and three more real nice gentlemen drove up. I wish I could remember the other 3 guys names, but with a memory like mine I never will. They were not coonhunters and were not getting to say much while Mr. Edwards and I Rambled on about these Blue dogs and when I mentioned to them that I was sorry they were not getting to say much in our conversation, they just smiled and said that they were enjoying listening. We talked and looked at the dogs and it had rained all day. Mr. Edwards and the other 3 gentlemen didn't get to visit very long as they had to get back and preach at their church last night, so our visit didn't last nearly as long as I would have liked. If you ever get the opportunity to meet Mr. Edwards, Don't pass it up. He is a great guy and has a wealth of knowledge about coonhunting and especially the Smokey River Dogs. Thanks for the visit Mr. Edwards, the pleasure was all mine.

Tramp and Smoke

Took these two out for a short run tonight. Turned them into the swamp off an ole woods road. They left and didn't go very far until the split up smoke went to the left and Tramp went right. Tramp swung south for about 600 yrds and made a circle and went east and then north. smoke was headed Northwest. Tramp struck a hot track and treed pretty quick. Smoke had not struck and when he heard Tramp tree he went to him. I went around on another road and when I stopped to listen both dogs were treeing hard. I went on around the swamp and came in on another road and got to within about 75 yards of them and walked on in to them. I saw the coon shortly after I left the 4-wheeler. I don't think this coon liked the idea of being treed as it acted nervous and looking down at me and the dogs. I petted the dogs up and we left and I'm sure it wasn't long before this coon came down and moved on out. We walked back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.
