SMOKE is SMOKING!!

Congrats on the win with Smoke Mr. Jack!! After that first turnout in Illinois I had NO doubt he could win a cast. Quick to get deep and quick to come treed with a coon. Hope all is well on your end and we will get together soon.

Smoke

Thanks Steve for the congratulations and kind words on Smoke. He is making a good hound and he is getting better seems like everytime I carry him out. I know he is hunting wider all the time and he don't need anything to go with him. He kind of makes it rough on an ole man sometime, but I guess if he will go tree them, I'll figure out a way to get to him. He kind of reminds me of your Bo dog. They are both independent, but will also work with other dogs. Another thing that I like about Bo and Smoke is that they prove that they don't have to be a rough tree dog to be a hard tree dog. They will stand shoulder to shoulder and have always got those heads looking strait up that tree. Steve I have been thinking about your Mother, how is she doing. It's raining pretty steady here right now so looks like I won't be hunting tonight.

Thanks Bill for the Congrats on Smoke. I kind of like him, but I'm just doing him like I heard an ole buddy say not to long ago. I'm just carrying on what some body else started.
Take care Bill and I hope between working and building that new house that you are able to get in a little hunting time.

Question

Mr. Jack, I didn’t want to Highjack your other post with a question. So I'll ask here. Mr. BH Patterson had a male off of Smokey River Blue Diamond Jim (I think) back in the mid 80’s. Do you recall his name?

Question

Tommy, It don't matter, You can come on my post anytime, glad to have you. Tommy in answer to your question, I sure don't remember. If you would like to talk to Mr. B.H. I'm sure his phone # is in the Blue Book and Mr. B.H. is like me. It's a lot easier to talk about them any more than it is to go hunting with them. If you need his # let me know and I will give it to you. Take care Tommy and good hunting.

Smoke

Took Smoke out for a short run last night after I was sure all the rain and the tornadoes were past. Turned him off an ole woods road. He went in about 600 yrds and never struck. I went around on another road and picked him up and we went to the river. turned him down a small branch and he went in about 500 yrds and struck a track on an ole slough. he trailed up the slough a ways and treed. It took me a while to get to him. I walked in to the slough from the side I was on and it sounded like he was on the other side, so I went back around and came in on the other side, and yea he was right out in the middle of it. I got my rifle and waded out to him. I looked for a little bit and didn't see the coon, but there was a nest up there. I shot the nest and the coon looked out at me. I knocked him out to Smoke. We walked back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.

Merry Christ Clinton to you and yours and the best to you and yours in the New Year.

Sheba 11

Chris came by earlier tonight and picked up ole Sheba and he and Clayton were going to take her and Doll V out for a run. After he left I loaded up Sheba 11 and headed to the swamp. I turned her off an ole woods road and she went in 150 yrds and I could tell on the garmin that she was working a track, but she didn't open until she had crossed the road that we had come in on. She started opening after she crossed the road and worked it on in another 150 yrds and treed. I went back down the road on the 4-wheeler until I was even with her and walked in to her. She was treed up a small tree, but it still hadn't lost any of its leaves. It could have been there, but I could not get him to look. We loaded up and headed for the river. I turned her up an ole slough. She turned and headed down it toward my deer plot. She started opening, but she did not sound right. She sounded more like she was about half baying. I had my training collar on her. Even though it didn't sound right I had to make sure. I got my rifle and headed to her. When I got near my deer plot I could tell she was out in it. I thought she might have caught a possum. When I walked out in the deer plot. I could see she had something on the ground. When I walked closer I saw that it was a big boar coon and it was dead, but I don't believe she caught that coon and killed it, and I wasn't that far from her and I would have known it if she had been in a fight with that coon. Even though he was still limber. I think the coon had just died or was almost dead. From what cause I don't know. I'm kind of worried about what caused this coon to die. We called it a night.

Smoke

Took Smoke out for a short run tonight. Turned him into a slough bottom off an ole woods road. He went in about 6oo yrds and struck a working track, moved it on in another 250 yrds and treed. It took me about 45 minutes to get to him. He was treed up a large oak that went over into another large oak. I shined both trees, but if he was there I couldn't get him to look. We walked back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.

Shadow and Smoke

Jeremy came by earlier tonight and we loaded up Shadow and Smoke and headed to the swamp. We decided to hunt them one at a time, so we dropped Shadow off a woods road into a slough bottom. He went in about 350 yrds and struck a cold track an started working it up and got it going, moved it out about 300 yrds and treed. We were able to ride within about 100 yrds of him and walked on in to him. He was treed up a large pine. Jeremy took a couple of pictures and we went to shining. Jeremy found him sitting right in the top. Shadow did a nice job. We came back to the truck and put Shadow up and got Smoke. We traveled farther on down the slough and turned Smoke loose. He went in about 150 yrds and struck a working track and started moving it out. He crossed the slough and circled back south and crossed the road that the trucks were on about 500 yrds behind the trucks and went on into the 20 year old planted pines for about 200 yrds and treed. We were able to ride to within about 200 yrds of where he was treed and walked on in to him. He was treed up a large Elm tree right beside another slough. I had treed up this same tree once before, but the leaves were on then and I couldn't find the coon, but tonight I found him laying flat on a big limb, but he would not show his eyes, and I'm sure that if the leaves had been on we never would have found him tonight. We walked back to the 4-wheelers and sat and talked for a while and then we called it a night. Both dogs had done a good job.

Gin

Took Gin out for a short run last night. First drop I really don't know what she was doing. I think she was bumping around on something off as she was not pushing it like she normally does. She hadn't been out all week and that was her way of letting me know to take her out more. She made a small circle in some 20 year old pines and quit it. I went around on another road and picked he up. Went on down the slough and dropped her out again. She went in 200 yrds and struck a cold track, worked it on in another 250 yrds and treed. I went around on another road and walked in to her. She was treed up a medium sized Oak that went into a big Cypress. I shinned for a few minutes and if he was there I never could get him to look. We walked back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.

Enjoying your thread

Mr. Jack,

I was a coon hunter many years ago. I had blue dogs for years and was a member of BBCHA for several years in the late 70's thru the early 90's. My last blue dog was a female I raised from a litter I had off of Gr. Nt. Ch. Germon's Blue Shadow owned by Al Germon from Falls Village CT. I was always interested in the Misty River dogs then and always wished I could try one. Liked the way your old Misty River Blue Ruby was bred and knew she was held in high regard by many in the coon hound world.

Been enjoying following your thread here and all the history. If my memory serves me right (no guarantees there) didn't you or one of your acquaintances then, breed one of your females to a dog name Andrews Blue Max? Max, was I believe a littermate to Bob (Butch) Dyjack's Blue Jessie who was Germon's Shadows dam. It could have been Mr. Basil Kittil that bred to the Max dog, can't remember for certain. Was just wondering if you remember anything about that and if any of those CT dogs made a good contribution to your line.

Last I heard about Al Germon he'd had a stroke a number of years back and had to be placed in a nursing home. Not sure if he's still alive or not.

Like the looks and sounds of your dogs from what you write. I still coon hunt with a good friend occasionally. He has a heck of a time finding a good hound that can run a cold track and have the meat at the end. Seems most are wanting the tight mouthed go yonder types that don't check in. I love to hear a good hound work up an old track into a running one and lock it down on tree and have their game. Sounds as if you might still follow that kind!

My apology for the length of thiis!

May you have a Blessed 2016,

Dan, Good to hear from you. Come on here anytime and make it as long as you like. The longer the better. If my memory serves me right I think I got to meet Mr. Al Germon once, probably at a Fall Round Up somewhere. I always wanted to breed a female to Shadow, but for whatever the reason, it never happened. I did breed My Nite Ch. "PR"Misty River Blue Bell To Nite Ch. "PR" Andrew's Blue Maxx. Maxx was a sister to DyJack's Blue Jessie 11. This cross played a very important Roll in my hounds. My Nite Ch."PR" Misty River Blue Misty was from this cross. Misty was a wonderfull hound. She could Run a colder track than most dogs could smell. Misty was the Dam to my Dual Grand Misty river Blue Doll female. That blood will always run in my dogs. Mr. Dan If you would like to read how thes ole hounds originated through the years, you can go to my other thread on here. Ch. Gr.Nite Ch."PR"
Smokey River Tramp 11. Happy New Year Mr. Dan.

Mr. Jack, Jay Williams here. I have not been to the hunts in a while but am still hunting a little. Dad got him a nice blue female about a year ago and has been hunting pretty hard. He has been on the message board also and has enjoyed your stories. Take care and have a good new year.
