Gin and Smoke

Took gin and Smoke out for a run last night. It was looking like rain, but according to the weather man it wasn't going to. Turned them into a branch off an ole woods road. They went in about 150 yrds, Smoke struck and then Gin. They trailed in about another 150 yrds and then Gin locked up treed and Smoke backed her. I walked in to them and they were treed up a large oak that went up strait for about 20' and split with one part going out to the right and the other part going out into another large tree. I shined for a while, I never could get him to look, but I believe he was there some where. We walked back to the 4-wheeler and moved on down the swamp and turned loose on a slough and they struck a cold track and worked it 500 yrds and finally lost out. I caught them crossing an ole woods road and it was raining harder so we called it a night.

Sheba 11

When I got back to the house from hunting Gin and Smoke, the rain had stopped so I put Gin and Smoke up and loaded Sheba 11 on the 4-wheeler and headed to the river. I turned her down a branch and she went in 100 yrds and struck a cold track. I really didn't think she would be able to do anything with it. She hadn't been hunted in about 3 weeks, but she began to slowly move it out of there. Every time she opened she was farther up the branch. She moved it in about 150 yrds and locked up treed. I walked in to her and she was treed up a medium sized oak leaning into a huge oak. When I looked into the huge oak he was looking at me and it looked like a big coon. I walked back to the 4-wheeler and got the rifle. I wanted to give her this one because she had done a good job on it and it had been a while since she had one down to her. When I got in closer I could not find him. I walked in and shook a vine and he was looking at me. He was on top of a big limb and I could not get a shot from where I was at. I walked out away from the tree and looked back at the limb and he had moved. I walked on around the tree and found him again and I shot and hit the coon and he started down the tree. I walked around close to where Sheba was treeing and the coon had come back over into the smaller tree that she was treeing up and was coming on down the tree. I shot him again and he liked to have jumped on me. I ducked and when I got to where I could see again the coon was gone and Sheba was throwing a fit. I unsnapped her and up the branch she went and into a briar patch where there was a clay rooted tree, left by Hurricane Katrina. She ran te coon in next to the clayroot and that was as far as he could go. She got her coon. About that time the rain started picking up again. We were going to go on down the river, but decided to call it a night.

Good hunt

Sounds like a good drop. Nothing like making a few drops right after a good rain.

Gin and Smoke

Took Gin and Smoke out for a run tonight. Turned them into the swamp off an ole woods road. They went in about 700 yrds and I decided I had better catch up and started their way, They had gotten into the backside of the sunken swamp. I knew there was a lot of water in there and I could hear them trailing. I figured I had better get closer to them and get them out of there if possible before they got some where that I couldn't get to them. When I pulled up to the backside they were trailing just under the bluff around the edge of a lot of water. I think the river must backup in there from all the rain we have had lately. I didn't waist anytime getting a leash on them. We loaded up and went on down the swamp to another place that has a lot of water in it, but I can get around on the other side. I turned them up the slough and they went in about 150 yrds and struck a pretty good track. They crossed the slough and went on up 200 yrds and treed. I went around on another woods road on the other side and walked in to them. They were treed up a huge leaning oak about 15 yrds off the slough, but it was leaning out over the slough. There were other large trees around that he could have crossed into. I had carried my rifle in with me. I was going to knock it out to them. I looked for a while, but decided he was not going to look, so I leashed up the dogs and started out, when I got about 35 yrds from the tree I just happened to look back and there he sat looking at me with both eyes. I just smiled and walked on. I knew he would be there to run again. We got to the 4-wheeler and called it a night. I didn't want to push my luck on the dogs getting behind some big water and I couldn't get to them.

Smoke

Took Smoke out for a run tonight. Dropped him out on a branch that made its way through the swamp on its way to the river. He went down it a little over 200 yrds. and struck a working track and moved it in another 150 yrds. and treed. I went down an ole woods road till I was even with him and walked in to him. He was treed up a large oak. I shined for a while, but if he was there I could not get him to look. We walked back to the 4-wheeler and moved on down toward the river. Turned him up a slough, he went in about 100 yrds and struck a pretty good track, move it on in about another 100 yrds. and treed. I walked in to him and he was treed up a large oak. I've treed coons in this tree before and I have never seen a coon in it. I wondered why that I never see a coon up this tree. I walked in closer to the tree and got to looking at the limbs real close. Some of the limbs on this tree was as big as a normal tree, and then I saw what the problem was, on one of these big limbs was a hole. You had to be in the right place to see it. I had shined this tree many times, but I had never seen that hole. We walked back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.

Hunting

Jack,
Sounds like you are getting some pretty good hunting in. The nine day deer gun season starts today so we will be on the bench for a couple of days. Starting to cool down here some with highs in the 30's and 40's during the day. Tonight it is expected to get down to 19 so Winters coming. Hope to get some hunting in after the deer season before I head down to Ada, Ok. in December to hunt a few nights. Should be a little warmer down there. If we don't get much snow I hope to hunt through the Winter but time will tell. Hope everything is going well.
Scott

Sheba 11 and Smoke

Loaded up Sheba 11 for a run tonight. Made first drop and she went in and just come treed. I could tell she wasn't right as she was about half way treeing. I thought she may have a possum. I walked in to her and she was tree up a pretty good sized tree. She didn't have a possum, but it was slick. I pulled her off it and turned her a loose and she didn't go back, she went on hunting, but never opened again. She came back after while and I loaded her up and moved on down the swamp. Turned her loose and she went in acouple hundred yrds and made a circle and came back and we moved on down the swamp. I turned her loose again and she went in on an ole slough and just locked up treed. This time she was treed right. I walked in to her and found the coon pretty quick. Took a couple of pictures and we left this one to run again.

Came back to the house and put Sheba up and got Smoke and headed back to thee swamp. Turned him off an ole woods road and he went in 200 yrds and struck a real cold track and started working it. He did a great job working the track through a lot of water for about 500 yrds and I really liked what he was doing. I went around to get closer and the track was getting better, but he was headed into a lot of water. I sure did hate to but I decided I had better catch him before he got some where that I couldn't get to him, so I caught him and we called it a night. We will get after that coon again as soon as the water goes down

Scott the hunting was good until the weather change, but the last couple of nights the coons have been hard to find. I hope the weather stays where you can hunt all winter and I wish you and Creek the best at the Battle.

Gin and Smoke

Chris and two of his boys came by a little after dark and we loaded up Gin and Smoke and headed to a swamp down close to Columbia, Ms. just off 35 high way. I have hunted there before and its pretty good hunting. You just have to keep an eye on them in case they head out toward the highway. Well tonight they had to go deeper than usual to strike and the coon made a circle and headed toward the highway. I didn't state it earlier, but one reason we were hunting tonight is Chris's two boys are getting ready for the State youth hunt and they are already doing pretty good. I think they will be ready by the time the youth hunt gets here. It sure is good to see kids out hunting instead of sitting around on the computer or cell phone. I'll get back to our hunt. We got on the 4-wheelers and cut the dogs off before they got to the highway and loaded up and went to a swamp where we didn't have to worry about the highway. We turned the dogs in toward a creek and they went in about 200 yrds and struck a pretty good track and pushed it on down the creek about 300 more yrds and treed. We got on our 4-wheelers and got closer to the dogs and Chris found the coon as we were walking in. We got the dogs and went farther into the swamp and turned them loose again. They hit a good track, but the dogs were not togeather they were running two coons and they went in about 200 yrds running parallel with each other and then split with smoke circling to the leftand getting deeper and Gin went to the right and came out across the road not far from where we were sitting and the coon she was after was headed toward the creek about 600 yrds deeper into the swamp. about that time Smoke treed and we went to him and he was treed up a large oak, but it was slick. We got Smoke and headed back toward Gin. We couldn't hear her, but the Garmin said she was treed. We hit a pipe line headed her way and before we got to the creek we could hear her treed not far up the creek from the pipeline. We walked up the creek to her and she was treed on a big pine laying out across the creek. The coon had crossed and went out on the other side, but the pine was to high for Gin to crosss on, but we will run him another night.

Smoke

Took Smoke out for a short run tonight. Turned him off an ole woods road into the swamp. He went in about 150 yrds and just come treed. I walked in to him and found the coon pretty quick. We left him to run again. Walked back to the 4-wheeler and headed for the river. Turned him down a small branch. He went in about 250 yrds and struck a working track and moved it in another 200 yrds and treed. I walked into him and he was treed up a medium sized oak and the coon was sitting right in the top. We left this one to run again also and called it a night.

Sheba 11

Took Sheba 11 out for a short run tonight. Dropped her off an ole woods road. She went in about 100 yrds and got on a cold track and started working it north. She crossed another woods road and moved the track on in another 250 yrds and treed. I walked in to her and she was treed up a big oak. I looked for a few minutes. Its possible he could have been there as there are still a lot of leaves in the swamp, but I really think it must have tapped on her or either she just missed it. We walked back to the 4-wheeler and moved on down to the river and turned her into a dry slough. She struck a hot track about 100 yrds in and locked up treed right quick. I know she had this one because she jammed it. It went up a small tree into a big oak and I never could get it to look. I told her we would get it next time and we walked back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.

Smoke

Took Smoke out for a run tonight, that little hound is getting better all the time. Dropped him off an ole woods road. he went in about 100 yrds opened about 3 times and locked up treed. I walked in to him and he was treed up a large oak and I found the coon pretty quick. We left him to run again an walked back to the 4-wheeler and headed to the river. Turned him down a branch that winds its way through the swamp on its way to the river. He went in about 300 yrds and struck a cold track and started working it. He worked it on in another 200 yrds and crossed a slough that has a lot of water in it and is probably 75 to 100 yrds wide. and worked it on in to another slough and this is where I caught him at last time, because it gets bad up in there. Nothing but Cypress trees, bushes, water and mud that you will bogg up in over your boots. He was a little over 800 yrds from where he struck when he treed. I went all the way up in there to find out that I couldn't get to him from there, so I had to come all the way back around and come around on the highway and he was treed up a big Cypress right in the edge of all the bad stuff. And I could only see from one spot. I had taken my rifle in there with me, because he had really done a good job on him and I was going to knock the coon out to him, but because of the Bogg I could only look from one spot and I couldn't get him to look at me there, so we left him to run again and called it a night.

Gin

Chris came by about dark and picked up Gin and took her out for a run. The Mississippi State Youth hunt is this weekend and Chris has two boys that will be intering the hunt. These boys has what it takes to win. I have been hunting with these boys quite a bit and they are a lot of fun to hunt with. He said that Gin treed two coons and he looked at one and he was sure she had the other one,but the tree she was treed on was a big tree that was leaning into two more big trees and he could not get him to look.

Thanks Dennis for the kind words on Sheba. She is a grand pup off your Joe dog and she is a good one.

Possum Dogs

I was out in the Taxidermy shed earlier tonight working on a deer and I've got a 6 acre puppy pen over across the road. I've got two pups over there in it. One is out of Ch. Gr. Nite Ch. "PR" Goodson's Rowdy Bocephus and Dual Grand "PR" Misty river blue Skeeter and the other one is out of Ch. Gr. Nite Ch. "PR" Smokey River Blue Tramp 11 and Nite Ch. "PR" Redman's Ozark Blue Fly. I hadn't fooled with them any, I just put them over there where they could run and get exercise. I had been hearing them barking over there for a while, but I hadn't paid them a lot of attention. I got to listening a little closer to them and they sounded like they were treeing. I walked outside the shed where I could hear them better and they were locked down over there. I have a self feeder over there and from time to time a possum or coon will come in there and help themselves, but I guess those pups didn't like something else coming in there and eating their feed. I got my rifle off the 4-wheeler and my light and walked over there. When they saw my light coming, they came and met me and then took off back to the tree and started treeing again. I looked up in the tree and there sat about as big of a possum as I had ever seen. I debated on wheather to shoot it out or not, but I needed to get rid of the possum anyway, so I knocked it out and the pups went on it. I might regret that one day when I start hunting them out side, but we will worry about that then. they followed me back to the gate and they acted like they had done a great deed and I guess they did, for that is what they were bred to do Tree Game. Well maybe a little different type, but they don't know that yet. They were just obeying their instincts.
