Well, took the new gyp out (I think we're calling her Allie - short for alcohol ) and she did quite well. The guy who had her before sounded like he pretty much just messed with her on caged coons and that was about the extent of it, so we weren't expecting much.
Took her and dropped her by herself in a timber/pasture mixed area. She mulled around for a while, not staying at our feet. About 15 mins into it, struck. Kinda slow moving at first, but then quickened up and we followed her from the woods we were in to the next thicket over. We saw 3 bucks bedded down in a third thicket next to the one she was in and hoped they weren't what she was tracking, since she was moving pretty quickly now. She stayed in the thicket that was next to the deer and sounded like she'd got into a hole. There were a mess of brambles and it took forever to get to her, but there were a couple of holes in the ground and one in a tree near where she'd been hollering.
We didn't get a chance to look for anything - too thick - but we were pretty pleased with how she did, especially since we weren't expecting a whole lot out of her. It started raining, so we didn't cut Heckler loose - didn't want to drop him on those deer, either, since we'd left the shock collar at the house. He'll have to wait til the weekend, since it's supped to rain for the next 3 or 4 days here...
