We have a thread on the off topic page and one of our regular posters over there has a niece.

Reports of many suspected cases right now testing has been very limited (only a few thousand in the whole country) and the ability to get test under old guidelines (more specifically geared toward the Ebola scare) Guidelines for getting tests were just changed so the ability for doctors to get tests should go way up. There have been a large number of pneumonia deaths recently very few of these were tested. Flu and pneumonia are typically grouped as one statistic. Yes thousands die from these every year. Millions contract one of the various strains of flu. Yes this is more deadly % wise than flu.
What so many of you don't understand is what the powers that be are trying to do by these crowd restrictions. They are trying to "flatten the curve". This means limit the number of cases over a longer period of time rather than a huge peak of cases at once so that facilities can actually handle the case load. I've posted this before but picture a graph with a large peak like a mountain as opposed to a long drawn out hill, the hill is manageable the mountain tough decisions have to be made as are happening in other countries right now. Any one familiarized with the medical field will tell you that at this time the hospitals run at near full capacity with flu, heart attacks, pneumonia ect, ect, ect. There are are only so many ventilators and they are found in the ICU setting requiring specialized nurses and much one to one ratio. Ecmo machines are not found in many of our hospitals that the most serious patients require. Being a novel virus (meaning new virus)none of us has any immunity to it and before it is all said and done most likely each and everyone of us will have been exposed just like we are to the various flu strains. Like the flu and cold viruses it is also zoonotic and will likely mutate many times (the saying you never catch the same cold twice), scientists right now believe there are already 2 active strains going one a mutation of the first. Luckily for everyone and especially children it does seems to be causing very mild symptoms in many and some are completely asymptomatic. We can hope we've been the asymptomatic ones but those are still carriers and spreaders. Here is the problem somewhere between 12% and the upper teens of known cases have required some sort of respiratory therapy and of those around 5% have been critical. These are the numbers that have the medical world very concerned. It's not even so much the death rate it is the ability of a new virus that no one has immunity to rapidly spread therefore overwhelming an all ready strained system that will require respiratory therapy. Hence this is their wish to slow it's progressions to help keep the number of critical patients at a level they can manage and care for.
*I will also add there is no reason to panic and no reason to politicize. They can't eat that toilet paper lol.

Thanks for a well thought out and articulated post on this issue, that's exactly what the medical community is concerned about. Hopefully, the guards being implemented will mediate the desired outcome and lesson the burden on the medical community, and give those affected by this disease the best chance of recovery by getting the best treatment available. Dave

If there is virus that causes diarrhea, will there a shortage of cough drops and nasal spray? Only in Illinois, just seen a mayor in Champaign is banning the sale of guns and alcohol during the virus

First let me say that I think it is appropriate that we take this virus seriously. My wife has a compromising medical condition so we are avoiding crowded places and just staying home when we can. But with that said I am skeptical of the percentages being thrown around. If 80% are not severe enough to see a Dr. how do we determine what the percentage is for those who have to be hospitalized and for those who die. Aren't we just guessing at the 80% figure? Since they are not reported we can't really know can we? What if the true figure is 95% or 65%? It completely changes the other percentages. Am I missing something. Also panic is never the answer.

These towns people should have been paying better attention this has been on the books since 2006 and is not being enforced... yet. It is just part of the emergency powers no one noticed existed until now.

I wondered why they were in such a hurry to declare this a National Emergency. Apparently it is just like declaring martial law. We have no "rights" now. The Government call tell us what to do. We can't have any protests so we have no freedom of speech. We can't have an election so we have no democracy. We can't go to church so we have no freedom of religion. Next they will come after our guns. The governor of Virginia is already talking about outlawing hunting and fishing. What have we come to?

I’m with u Tom. I think it should be taken seriously just like any other virus. However I don’t see how they know any true numbers. I know a couple people that rarely ever get sick that we’re very sick back in December, no test was ever done. Maybe they had it back then ? I understand taking precautions but they really don’t know any numbers for sure or even when it started . I would say it’s wise for you and your wife to stay at home when possible and wash hands often but it’s not really known how far through the cycle we are.

There is no right to an education now. The government has closed the schools. Whatever happened to "personal freedom"? I think that if you are "at risk" you should be able to decide for yourself whether or not you wanted to exercise personal isolation. The government should give us all of the information and let us make our own decision. We don't need them to make it for us. This is getting ridiculous.

Ohio and Illinois all restaurants and bars will be closed. Look for states to very soon be put under lockdown as we've seen in other countries. If you are not prepared yet get that way because it is coming regardless of what your thoughts on the situation are.

I agree Sonny, we had something bad come through our community back in December/January very similar to these Corona symptoms. I don't know of anyone that is "sick" right now.

Ridiculous is right! Better not shut down my coon hunts. This is the best time of year to competition hunt

Americans are DEFINITELY SICK

Approx 1500 known cases of this virus and approx 50 die and
we have Mass Chaos with people just losing their minds .

Approx 2400 babies are murdered each day & no one says anything.
You do the math.

Let that sink in .

Around 1200 a year die from domestic violence, 30 people die EVERY DAY from Drunk Drivers. Depending where you look about 1200 people die from the flu every year.

We've been through so much worse than this Corona Virus... we go through much worse than the Corona Virus on an almost daily basis. I am always the last guy in the world to do the conspiracy.... but shutting down the country over this corona virus makes me feel like something else is at play here.
