Now you have opened up a can of worms! Lol. How far back are we talking? My opinion is that most modern pedigrees are correct, especially after DNA testing came about. Before DNA testing, we were at the mercy and integrity of the breeders. Absolutely, no doubt that there were "mistakes" on some pedigrees in the past. Lol. Dave

One of the 2 old guys that started me into coon hunting in 1977 bought several from Bland. The first one was the best. A grade B&T named Smokey.
I never saw him go as he had died before I started hunting with them. I hunted with all the rest though. The last one was out of old Hickory Nut Harry. That dog made a shortage of skunks around here locally. He'd go out of his way to kill one. He was a pretty decent coon dog after he got all the skunks out of the way! LOL!

Just got to thinking........1 of the 2 old guys I mentioned that got me started was 55 in 1977. I'll be 61 in a few months what possessed me to think he was old??😯🤔

Surprised the name Leroy Penny didn't come up.Went to Kent on one time and he sold every hound he could round up.lot of sad people when they went hunting,

What you described was in fact what happened ALL over the coon hunting community. There was a lot of that stuff going on and most folks knew it. I remember when a registered dog was a rarity in these mountains. Your post was a needed reminder of what really went on in the early dogs of registration. No winder we are still getting some throwbacks in our modern dogs. Lol. Dave

There's a whole family in Kentucky been getting people for year's not just in dog's but equipment too . There's been dozens of post about them bit people still send them money .

When I was about 15 years old a man I hunted rabbits with knew I was interested in coon hunting. He knew a coon hunter and said he would take me to his place to see his hounds. When we got there the coon hunter said he didn't have any coon dogs at the time. He showed us eleven crates from dogs he had shipped from one of the kennels that advertised in Field and Stream for $65 apiece. He said none of them would do anything and he had shot them. The man I went with asked him why didn't he just pay the money and buy a good dog. He said, Hell, they asking $200 to 300 for a coon dog, ain't no dam dog worth that kinda money."

Here has been my experience. Up until recently I've hunted English dogs. One of the biggest names in the English breed took me to the cleaners. Had a 2 year old female from his kennel. He owned sire and dam. Made a NitCh out of her in three out of four hunts and not just small local hunts either. Qualified her for the World Hunt. She came in heat so I knew I couldn't hunt her in the world so I bred her to a big name stud dog. Did the DNA and her dam was her dam but her Sire was unknown. Who do you think was left holding the bag? Not Larry Wilcox. Dog dealers come I all shapes and forms

My three favorite memories from the old local dog traders are

1.One guy had three rows of dog houses each row was a different price you could bring one back but you always ended up paying more for new in the "better" rows he also had his personal hound tied out back which could be bought for the right price I don't remember that personal hound being the same any time I was there looking did buy one really nice dog from him once from the $300 row

2. old guy I hunted with would get a hound on two week trial and try to sell it for more money it would get bad if you lost one of those trial hounds back in the days before trackers we spent a lot of time looking for some of them so he wouldn't lose his money.I bought a half redbone half black and tan from him for $250 one night and he complained for years because the dog was worth more than he sold him for We sold him for $750 after we had him for several years he was a pretty nice hound

3.every dog this one guy had for sale absolutely hated a coon most of them hated them so much that they would not run or tree them but he gave the same pitch every time
