Another Mr. Hitt quote " if a guy thought he had a chance for a 10th place trophy, he would come back to the club, eat breakfast and have fellowship with other hunters"

if they gave just one more place then number of cast hunting (5 championship points) we would see a big improvement in hunt attendance

.

I am afraid the past is gone.

We have:
UKC coonhound events.
ACHA coonhound events.
CVKC coonhound events.
PKC coonhound events.
CHKC coonhound events.

I think those events might be the reason the hunt numbers are down. I hate to tell you this. The young guys which are the future of the sport are charmed by the MONEY. There are 3 KC's on that list that charm the young ones.

We all have hunted with some fine Nite Champion dogs. I think each and everyone of us have hunted with some that make us wonder how they made Nite Champion. IF you open your eyes you see that TITLES don't mean as much as they use to.

We have had pages on here about how to get the youth involved. Show me the Money! Thats the answer.

Why don't you post that picture of Hemi fighting that "coon"? The more I look at it the more it looks likes a monkey. You did say Hemi treed up a vine. Thats why I asked you if you saw any banana peelings. This coulda come straight out of a Tarzan movie. Hey buddy I'm just trying to make excuses for Hemi. He sure sounds good on the wood.

I agree with you 100% Bruce. I just can't figure out why they don't like UKC's money. Those Super Slams pay good money for nothing more than a cast win. Most of the Breed Day events have a big pot now. Even the basic weekend event have decent calcuttas.

I was hoping you would explain how it was to UKC's benefit? I thought you said UKC made those changes to benefit themselves.

I wasn't part of those discussions but am guessing it was a request from coonhunters like yourself wondering how they could make the Nite Ch title more respected?

So if i'm getting what he is saying he wants the participation trophy brought back. If I'm getting this correct the participation trophy didn't just start it was out in the 80's .

The "you gotta see a coon in ukc" is one of the poorest excuses for hunt attendance. Most of the kids hunting these days simply looks at the money. They ask themselves do i pay 25 or 30 entry fee for the chance to win it back plus some gas money or do i hunt for a win slip. Now some will run just to nt champ the dog but after that they are back at the $kc. Its all about numbers, money, and the different regestries. Jmho

Dont fool your self its about the money for the ones that are flocking to the other Kc's but thats not all. Debate it all you want they hate a dog that covers in the last few seconds and gets 75 or 50. They hate guys that because you have to have plus points will argue until they are blue in the face about coons crossing out and how that robins nest could have a coon in it. They hate dogs that pack and cover, the list can go on and on.

You are not going to draw those people to the UKC, however there is a large pool not being tapped. Its the guys that do not come to hunts at all. Believe it or not there are a lot more of them then there are us. There are also the guys that have a Grand at the house and its the only dog they have like me. Going back to the old format isn't going to do anything. It was changed for a reason.

Ok Todd since you asked unlike some that have commented I was at a hunt Saturday night talking to folks about what theywould like to see young and old down here in the land of the forgotten back in the day I seen Fred Miller pop in unexpected Todd you and Allen I have never seen but a long ways from here at a distance. Now how it changed was back in the old format y'all probly had 10 win slips and more on the bench because by placing cast winners first and then through 10th place with non cast winners there was more people competing which made winning that first place harder. Then y'all changed it to cast winners only it took several years to decline but it did people quit coming back to eat or get that tenth place trophy which hurt the clubs because it hurt their operating money to buy trophies or prizes but y'all went up on the hunt packet then still get $2 a dog and like Saturday night had a ntch and a regestered cast both dead you got the same money with no win slips to look at I ain't said nothing about 3 hrs 2 hrs is plenty but these guys want it back like it was if you want to hunt for money they got those hunts if you want family fun there is a place for it come down here and talk to these folks you will see but if you don't do something you will start to feel it because it feels a little bit one sided and selfish down here you asked there it is I am to old and cranky and care to much to be scared.

HTX hunts

The HTX hunts aren't for everyone, just as the night hunts aren't either, I've done both & can see that an alternative for the older folks that can't keep up with the younger fellows can be the HTX hunts.
A few years ago I took an old timer out with his Plott hound, I believe he was 76 years young at that time and yes in his younger days he made a few Nt.chs as well as a Gr nt or two.
He had a walking stick & moved slow, 1st tree was a Hemlock that we couldn't see the coon, it very well could have been there. 2nd tree was just as time was about to run out & after treeing his 5 minutes his time was out. we went to the tree & he handled his dog Willie, and we began to shine the tree. I spotted the coon right off but decided to give the old timer a few minutes and the thrill of find the coon & sure enough he did. he was happy as a little kid. so I thought I'd have a little fun and says that's a woodchuck, he knew what I was up to tho. and we had a good laugh. The following year the fellow had a stroke and then later passed away.
to me that is what these HTX hunts are for a good time and someone showing their hound off that they are proud of.
Now for requiring a dog to have a HTX degree to be Nt.Ch. --no way, I believe the HTX hunts were designed to keep old guys involved as well as introduce those who are newer to the sport.
One thing is you will always have buddies bending the rules in both the comp hunts and the HTX hunts.
I think the HTX hunts take the slick handler out of the scoring more so that the comp hunts, & that is just my opinion

The thing with the HTX hunts is that most clubs hold them on week nights because the comp hunts are on weekends. & most fellows have to work the next day or are already working 2nd shift. & can't make the hunt.

Joey a grand night champion is some have usually obtained at the local level then to prove his worth you go to the big state hunts and sectionals and the world I personally don't want to go beat the little guys with my Grntchs and then brag on his wins I remember when ball did that with spike sometimes he was the only one there those guys got to chasing him around the hunts till he quit it you got something hot take him to bigger hunts there is plenty of them.

Your completely missing the point. The local clubs are the ones that are suffering and your telling me to take mine and go to the bigger hunts instead. One of the reason for the decline in the UKC hunts is no one respects the title anymore and that is really all they offer. Making it easier to get a title by giving them points toward the title without winning there cast will not do much to help that.

Hmmm I'm not gonna debate on titles as I've been to most all kcs but I'll say this . I'd have to drive around 5 hour's one way in hopes of finding an HTX event . There just isn't any around here . So say 80 100 $ round trip entry fee food drinks and depending how late I stay out hunting I may have to get a motel room . I would quit hunting UKC all together . I'm a poor man but I donate my money every chance I get and it's not too some local club I drive minimum an hour to one club and the rest are 2 hour's or more . But I go cause I enjoy testing my dog's against other's .

No your missing the point just take for instance Corey's cast the other night I told him they are putting you in a crappy spot pumping jacks every two hundred yards I told him you get a coon treed lay back because that's all your going to tree in there he had first and first on the coon then a den then two slicks all he had to do was take last and last on the slicks but all four guys were gunning and if they would have listened to me in the old format one might have got a first and one might have got a second but instead they were gunning harder because they knew only one could win in that crap hole spot. Your competing with a kc that no matter what there is going to be a winner and you get paid that night understand. Now for that Grntchs thing maybe you won't but it will be a double edge sword either the ntch boys will quit coming because they are getting beat by a Grntchs or them ntch boys go to putting on a coon treeing clinic on them Grntchs won't be long the Grntchs boys will say my dog is a Grntchs I don't have nothing to prove anyways lol.

You made yours a Grntchs hunting against other ntchs didn't you ?

Come to find out the guy had us trespassing and I could have guided 5 miles from the club in a good spot.

I hate to read on here every day about titles are cheap and don’t mean much any more, I need to get better dogs or hit the road and hunt where you guys hunt, or bring them easy titled dogs out here and earn that win slip.

No one deserves a win with one coon and 2 slicks. My dog is the same dog when he made grand as he was before he was put in his first hunt and i learned to loose a long time ago. They have to have a reason to come and getting a title isn't good enough anymore.
