How about, "to each his own" Some people hunt all night every night and some don't hunt at all. And there are a lot of people between those that hunt to different degrees. Age has slowed me down but I still don't want to quit.

Years ago I left a dog out and lost him for a week.I found his tracking collar and it appeared to be cut off with a knife.It was during deer bow hunting season and when I found him a week later one of his ears looked like someone had tried to cut it off.It was hanging attached by about a quarter of an inch.After thinking about it for a long time I decided what may have happened was a deer hunter tried to shoot him with an arrow and it sliced thru his collar and hit his ear.After that I vowed to never leave a dog out again and believe I never have.I absolutely believe if I turn a dog loose and he does his job its my duty to go to him!This guy needs to find another sport.imo.

Some places that I hunt, you can't hear a dog 350 yds from you. And just because a dog knows how to get back to where you turned them loose doesn't mean that they want to. Some will come back in 30 minutes and some will come back when the sun comes up. And there are some that could care less and won't come back for days. Why do some people think that everywhere in the country is just like where they hunt? And why do some think that every dog is just like their dog?
Every hunter is different and every dog is different. I have never understood why some think that their way is the only way and everyone else should be just like them. Or that every dog's style should be just like what they like. Diversity is what makes the World not only challenging but exciting. Imagine how boring it would be if we were all just alike.
Stateing your preference or what you think is one thing. But sayiing that everyone that doesn't think or act you do is something else.

I never said that I wouldn't go to one if they were treed if it were possible. But I do "understand" that everyone is different. You post in one sentence that you have left your dogs before and then in the next you say that you don't "understand" why someone else would not go get theirs. Now that I don't "understand".

Maybe it is their responsibility to come back and find me. Or to come when I call them. Oh I go get them. But sometimes it is the next morning.
And I went back and re-read the posts. Nowhere did I see where anyone said anything about intentionally turning a dog loose when they didn't plan on going to get them.

I agree with you Rob. There is a big difference in not knowing where your dogs are and having to leave them, and knowing exactly where they're at because you have a Garmin but being too sorry to go get them.

If for some reason you are physically not able to go get the dog and you have a dog that doesn't listen just don't turn the stupid thing loose to begin with.

I hunt mine in some places that I cant get to them at times because of water. Last year I left one and it was the first one I had left in many years. She treed across water that was moving pretty swift. I started to swim it like I have a thousand times and got this gut feeling that I shouldn't. So I left her. Figuring she would be back where I left her or close at 9 the next morning I headed back. She was still treed in the same spot. I walked the mile back there and had to swim the dang thing anyway. BY the time I got to her she had been treed for 12 hours and you could barely hear her.

Sometimes you don't have a choice but if I can make it I'm going to get them or at least call them back. With that female calling wasn't an option. The male I have now I have called back across water several times. If this guy dosen't want to go to his dog for what ever reason then that's his business. Its not mine to judge what he does. People are different I could tell a long time ago from his post that he thinks a little differently than most in the coon hunting world but that's ok. Whats the song say? " It takes all kinds of kinds" I mean look at Richard.

I will word this a little different since you like playing the devils advocate, MY dog is MY responsibility and its MY responsibility to teach MY dog to come when called, a Dog is an animal and believe it or not the only responsibility they have is to eat, crap, and breed.

Rob I never had one with a handle, I never worried about. I just waited till they treed and went and got them. Got wet a bunch of nights. After this one I'll never have one again that want come when I call it.

I agree with going to the dogs if at all possible.

Most of you have no clue what the Sheep Ridge Wilderness is like. It is FLAT, it is THICK, it is HUGE!! Look up what a pocossin is. You think 700 yards is not far and in most terrains it is not. In this area it might as well be 7 MILES. Have you ever pushed your way through a reed thicket? Try looking at stuff that thick that is swamp mahogany about 1 to 2 inches thick wrapped up in green brier and black briars. Like I said in an earlier post, you don't walk through it you climb through it. At 700 yards the dogs will never hear you call unless they actually stop and listen. I use a steel whistle to get their attention when trying to call dogs out. The garmin tone is great but it may not penetrate this mess at 700 yards, I know the tritronics can't!!

Rob, like I said before, there is some great hunting in the Croatan but not the block they call the SHEEP RIDGE WILDERNESS. If you want to try it come on down and I can guide you. I live one hour north and have hunted around it.

My dog and I have more of a partnership. And I don't expect him to be perfect and he doesn't expect me to be perfect.
