BMOSS like I said, your information is very much appreciated. Message boards can seem hard on someone but we are all in the same boat and really your information is appreciated.

Autumn not saying your right or wrong as it doesn't matter we all draw our on conclusions on dog feed. What did you base your negative response on Hills Science Dog Food.

I know the dog food advisor gives it about a 2 but I don't have much faith in their evaluations at times.

My wife fed it to our Yorkies and I raised heck about the price and told her I would buy their feed. I got some top feed and they went to scratching. I guess she won that argument.
I talked to one man not in this conversation who has some pretty nice hounds that have done quite well for years in the larger UKC hunts. He believed in the Hills Science diet.

I really don't know but interested in listening and learning from everybody. I tried to talk to one vet about it but when you ask questions on a subject they really haven't focused on they don't seem to be happy.

I fed Ole Roy for years and me and my dogs seemed happy!

Salt block

What if you simply put a salt block in the dogs kennel? Has anyone tried this? You can buy a 50lb block for less than $10. Would the dogs lick it and get the amount they need?

salt

The issue is not salt. It's the lack of iodine in the feed. Iodized salt used in science diet is 46% iodine coming from potassium iodate. I have seen how SD has changed the levels in one dog and I'm starting another one on it also. This isn't not just a fly by theory from a vet. It has been tested on over 20 dogs with low thyroid levels and SD has proven to raise the levels in just a few months.

As a first time member in the Thyroid Club. Could someone that has researched this, make a list of dog food brands that would benefit our thyroid dogs.

I started the other thread 'heat cycles gone bad'. I asked Dog Food Advisor to check iodine levels in the dog food due to low Thyroid levels. They told me it would be too costly to test each one because there are so many foods. You can talk to the dog food companies personally and ask them to test for iodine levels. Victor and Diamond both did for me

At the vets advise my brother to feed it to my Hooker female. She did no better on it then she did on Purina or Ol Roy. Few friends from the show dog world didn't think much of Hill's either and suggested Nature Domain, which is a grain free dog food. She's likes it, has put weight on with it and seems to have helped her ears/allergies

Science Diet used to have a Performance line of foods in the 90s. I'm not sure when they stopped making it but it was really good stuff. Their quality control is still some of the best I've ever seen. They've turned down beef at their Kansas factory that went down the road to McDonalds and Burger King.

http://www.convertunits.com/from/mg+kg/to/mg+lb

Has anyone ever seen a conversion chart like this? Seems that if you have 5.1 mg/kilo.... Convert to how much per lb.. it comes out to 11.22 mg/lb. Dog food companies(some)... Use this. Now, I have a calculation.. if you put 2.2 lbs of dog food in a dish, it eats all of it, it gets 5.1 mg of ingested iodine, but if it eats just 1 lb... It eats 11.22 mg of ingested iodine?? Hmm. No wonder these posts are giving me a headache. My calculations is 5.1mg/kilo would be 2.313 mg/lb. You divide by 2.2, not multiply. But then again, what do I know?
BTW. One of the major dog food companies sent me this conversion chart. (And it ain't who you think).No wonder it is such an issue.

Pounds = KG x 2.2
KG = Pounds / 2.2

Here is some newer info on thyroid testing from Dr. Jean Dodds. She has an independent lab and I'd highly recommend sending your blood samples to her for testing and for workup of suspected cases of hypothyroidism.

Sure wish, after all this has come to lite.. vets that can, confer with each other, compare notes, come up with healthy numbers, help us keep our hounds healthy. Most vets got into it for the love of animals. Can anyone help us out,? There is about 6 posts on this subject now.

I talked to Victor again today. Someone new. Several ideas were passed between us, all worth looking into. I will be quiet for awhile, we have the ball rolling. As I get credible info, I will pass it along.

thyroid problem

what are the symptom of a low thyroid problem in these dogs far as how they hunt and tree in the woods.

Doc, I am looking to change feeds. does science diet have enough fat/protein in it for these hounds being hunted 4-6 nights a weeks? Are there different kinds of science diet? Thanks for all the work everybody's doing here. Thanks.

I have heard a lot of different antics that these disorders are supposed to be able to cause. I know we hear a lot about it and it sounds like some sort of epidemic. Tick born diseases and low thyroid for certain exist, but I think it might be a good idea to consider how much of what we hear is for real, factual tested and just how much is a new excuse for poor performance.
I cannot buy into some of the "symptoms" that people claim are caused by low thyroid and tick bites. I have a dog that is three years old and because of low appetite and weight gain he was tested. The test showed a low thyroid,but not enough to need medication, so the vet said. He also tested positive for erlichia. No, he doesn't leave the tree, it didn't make him start tree fighting and so far, knock on wood....he don't run tracks two miles and put a slick tree on the end of it 6 times a night. Maybe I am just lucky, but I doubt it. His only symptom is that he hardly eats much in the summer.
I think the question we should all be asking is: New excuse or epidemic???

The highest fat/ protein I have found is the puppy healthy development 26/16. I started feeding it too my dogs around a month ago. I don't know if its just a coincidence but she has been hunting a lot better the last week or so. She has way more drive doesn't seem to bog down on tracks and tree's way harder than she has in a while and seems to have more stamina than she did before. Like I said it may just be a coincidence but until I see other wise I wont feed anything else.

Looks like the problem 'might' be TOO MUCH Iodine in dog food.

It is hard to argue with results like that. For once something good has come from reading the message board.

Sam Walton was worth 100 billion dollars and he fed his bird dog Old Roy. Just saying!

It's raining here so I was looking at this post AGAIN and noticed your remark " Science Diet dog food quality control is some of the best I've seen. They've turned down beef at their Kansas factory that went down the road to Mc Donalds and Burger King". Am I to read into this statement that these two fast food companies feed beef to the AMERICAN public that Science Diet dog food Co will not use in their dog food.?

Why is science diet the only feed out there with it??? Did others use to have it and just stop using it? Talking before all these natural foods came along.
