Well I guess you put me in my place but I think maybe you read sombody else's post ain't but one of those dogs you mentioned that I don't like and my dogs carry him twice not by choice and believe me I hunted enough off of him to know what I am talking about but why don't you give your real name how old you are what breeding accomplishments you have made who impresses you how many dogs you have titled ect who knows I might want some of what you got because it's only took me a lifetime to learn what I know but I might be a little slow if you don't respond then I will know you were full of chit.

I hunt 3-4 nights and know what I want.My dogs tree coons great but just flat out have a hard time winning a hunt.I honestly believe a more independent coontreer will win more hunts.Thats why I asked.Ive hunted with 3 Bone dogs.They all split treed or were deep and lonely with the meat.Beat me everytime.Ive looked at 10 pages of classifieds and haven't seen any young dogs that sound like what I'm looking for.

Jackson 87 reason why I used bone and am again is he is putting dogs on the ground when put in coons the ones I have hunted with take their coons as they come to them they are accurate and independent and don't give so much mouth that everything knows we're they are till its to late. Sorry I got a little testy I am really pationate about what I do I watch a stud dog a long time before I use them if they are consistantly reproducing what you like those papers don't matter all they are is a tool like using a cookbook to bake a cake.

One more thing.........Skuna River Bark dogs impress me. Most I have seen are extremely independent, get gone, get deep quick, and have a coon when they tree. Simply put, they WIN HUNTS!

Now for the kicker.........I have started hunting Plotts!

I don't think that Robert was saying that at all. But not speaking for him. I think what he is saying that the cross he is making is gonna be one that don't shoot out of the country, but hunts smart, trees coon as they come. This cross could be special andis what he is looking for. He has spent many years doing this and knows what he wants. I myself can't wait to get one.

I am glad you replied that impresses me more than you know I like to know who I am talking to most of the time this is just conversation not ment to hurt anybody. But to let you know where I come from I can not remember a time I did not have a hound when I was 18 yrs old I started hunting dogs for Delton hall (before rattler )and aw Norman (Normans coon stopper) I hunted dogs for them and other people until I was 40 yrs old then I decided I wanted my own dogs they both helped me achieve that over that time because they bought and sold dogs I had the opertunity to hunt what ever was hot all those years I hunted hard and done a lot of winning I have a lot of experience but don't know it all try to compete with some of these dogs they got now days for 3 hrs without minusing out heck they win with minus I wasent being rude to you but most of the time a post like you made is by a 25 yr old just saying what he read in a book somewhere a lot of changes since I started and there will be some more right now I am on the 4th generation of these dogs I have owned since rattler I retire in two years I am trying to put me somthing together before then where I can go play with the big boys lol bottom line I have payed my dues but you can pick on me anytime you want to I got thick hide.

I want to Thank three people for sharing some good information on on this post. It took three pages be we got to the truth.
They are: Yadkintar, GES and GA Dawg.

GA Dawg explained that independence is not just in one line of dogs. Something I have been seeing for some time. I am not into man made anything with coonhounds but in Genetics first, time in the woods second is how I think a coonhound is developed. We could write 3 pages on this subject alone but independence is not just getting gone. It comes from a combination of things and it has spread its way into several bloodlines.

GES you asked the question I have been scratching my head about. I think age has something to do with it. Many and I include myself in this, as we get older see changes we don't like or feel is good for the sport. The changes in the hounds takes us to our physical limits which hurts in our hearts and not something everyone sees. The younger generation is also doing things different and in a way we don't understand. We start to question and be negative as to why the clubs are not the same, why the dogs have went crazy and why the young guys show up with track shoes on. When something starts to pass you by and is putting some distance on you, you start to see it from from a different point of view. Some start to be negative about it, while they are attempting to keep up with the same dogs, clubs, and hunting equipment. Thing is the new generation just sees it a little different. It is the responsibility of the older generation to hand down a positive attitude towards coon hunting even though the years have presented us with a lot of changes and negatives.

Tar you have been very successful with your hounds and hunting. I hope it keeps going for you many years into the future. You are the experience the young men and women need to draw from and I know you help them out. Just remember that anyone that has years of experience like you do has a sack full of negatives and a sack full of positives they carry around. The younger generation deserves to hear from the sack full of positives.
To talk the dogs down and then to be hunting the same breed of dogs is reaching into the negative bag. There is good and bad in every dog, every comp hunt, every breed and every hunter. We can dwell on our differences or we can share what we have in common. Hopefully that is the love of the woods and coon hunting.

Now back to reality. This is a message board and only a small percentage of people readings gets involved and a large percentage just reads. I know many times I go out real far to the left or real far to the right. One of my biggest joys at a risk of sounding like an idiot is to stir the emotions of people on the side lines and get them involved in a subject. We need to all learn from one another and even if it gets harder every day to follow one of these go yonder hounds, we never get to old to learn.

Now back to possum hunting. I have a dog that tells on himself at every possum tree. When you walk in and leash him he will duck down like he is fixing to get a spanking. He is smart enough to know that, just not smart enough to quit treeing them. It is funny. Maybe only one or two a year and many coon in-between. I can remember ever possum but soon forget all the coon. We are suppose to remember the joys of life. Maybe I am a possum hunter at heart.

Bruce I agree with you I have said before I am not a very talented writer I just can't write it like I mean it somtimes that's why I give my phone number to anybody that might need help belive me my dogs are not any better than anybody else's I am not taking down the bloodline just the style when in the past when I first started you would be asked if you had a banjo bred dog or a Finley River bred dog now the pedigrees are so mixed up you can't talk bad about a blood line because you probly got some of it yourself lol. Two things people have been discussing wanting a change was the babbling strait line Hunter working the clock and the leash lock rule I knew when I addressed it it would ruffle feathers I took a honest last strike, first tree dog with the meat to a kc with no leash lock and proved my point by winning more than I lost because coon eyes matter already one other kc the hunters are pushing for the no leash lock why because there is no reason you should have to walk an hour with your dog on the leash in any hunt and get beat by a dog that was struck on the babble and left the world working the clock until I retire in the next two years I am focused on helping the youth program and building me a dog that I can compete with the best I like a challenge and if I ever come off arrogant I apologize because I am willing to help anybody any time I have a long list of people to thank for helping a little crazy kid from south Texas.

Make me grin .Hey Bruce my dog does the same thing when he trees a possum . As soon as my light hits him he stops treeing , crouches down, and starts easin off . Sneaky rascal I swear hes grinning and hissing . That aint gonna happen with my new pup she gonna love all tree game (im not kidding ) and im gonna be at PHKC world .Shes a blue dog so im not gonna win it but ill be there !

I know I enjoy talking dog with you veterans of the sport.I am from the newer generation.I like to hunt and learn.I know what a coondog is and I know what's winning the hunts.Id like to find that happy medium.That way I can take my young boys out and tree coons through the week and win a few hunts when we I go to town.Ive traveled all over searching for the style of dog I like and let me tell you there isn't many out there.I just booked me a Bone pup so I think I'm on the right track.It will be 7 months old come season so it should be some fun.I seriously enjoy and learn from y'all shooting the bull on here.Keep up the good work guys.

I think maybe it's more because of the hunting conditions if a lot of times you have a dog with enough heart to handle it night after night they were usually the type you had to keep a handle on them to keep them right you had to hunt them hard some of these men you might recognize: Bill crow( crows boss) Tim ball ( Harry ) junior Frazier ( red river joker ) jimmy Davis ( I still hunt with ) bob studard ( honey creek dogs ) and I can name more all loved hunting more than anything but one I hunted with a lot was James ( gimp ) Lewis ( blue River bill ) gimp would tell you boy if you don't want to see the sun come up don't get in the truck we somtimes would hunt In three counties in the same night I remember when gimp had his stroke I wondered how it was going to effect him we were on blue River his dog got struck let out maybe 15 barks gimp said boy I will be back in a minute that ain't right he took off brush breaking in a minute I heard the awfullest dog woopin you ever heard I came up with a bunch of the hardest to please hardest hunters you ever seen but at the same time would put on a apron at a benefit for a hunter in need.

I hunted in the Elite hunt this weekend. The no leash lock rule is a game changer...

Believe me when I tell ya if I tree one relatively close (within 100-500yds) and get him treed before get yours gets treed a mile deep 7/10 times you are sunk.

WHY??? While are walking 30-40min to yours mine is working on coon number two.

With that said if Mr. One mile gets treed first 7/10 times I'm cooked because he gets scored first and should have enough time tree #2 before i get back to mine.
