He wasn't much to brag about as a track dog until he got 5-6 years of age. It's like a light switch was turned on. He was hunted by Max Hunter and Roger Gibson between 2-3 years of age in Virginia and Alabama. Roger said that after a few weeks in Bama, he was able to hang with the best down there in the swamps and had a big heart. He was laid up for a year from 3-4 when he was treated for heartworms. I was in Veterinary School when I bought him at 4 so he really didn't get pushed hard except in the summer months in 1988. I ran him on the Purina circuit that year and put on over 30k miles that summer. He was a coon treer but definitely not a great track dog at that point in his life. He was winning his cast but not racking up big points to place high enough to place in Purina Points back then. You didn't get Purina Points by just winning your cast back then, you had to place in Gr.Nt.and Nt.Ch to get points. He was really fast though and ran to catch. He's one dog I never had come back to me or stand around and not hunt. He and his daughter Mace had the most drive and heart of any of the dogs I hunted. Back then we were hunting 3 hour hunts and he was known for closing the deal at the end of the hunt by getting one coon away from the pack. We had a lot of guys that were impressed with his size / legs at Walker Days and we would always get that old saying " He's a Walker Dog in a Redbone's coat" and he don't hunt like no Redbone, he hunts like a Walker dog. lol
1988 was a drought year and it was hard on most dogs including him. I hunted with my buddies along the WI River that summer which is where the coon were at that time and he was really impressive in thick coon. It was so dry that you could walk across the WI River which was about 50 yards wide in some spots. When I cut him loose near my house up on the dry hill tops he would get out of range of my tracking system most of the time and it wasn't uncommon to drive 5 miles to find him treed. He had a lot of heart and drive, but not a great track dog in those conditions.
In 1989, when TJ was 5, Bill Wallock hurt his wrist at his job and had to stay out of work for 6 months. All he did was hunt TJ almost every night. He became a coon treeing machine and could run tracks away from other dogs that they couldn't even smell. Ask Russ Downing cause he hunted his Toad dog two nights in a row against him at a big hunt and we drew and beat Spare Time Spanky at least twice as well. When I hunted with him I couldn't believe it was the same dog. He won every hunt Bill put him in that year including 1st at an RQE with 120 dogs entered in MN, MI State Hunt, WI State Hunt, Red , White And Blue Hunt, 2 Redbone Sectionals, and Plymouth Benefit Hunt. His average score was between 600- 800 points and went over 1000 points in 3 of them. He became a legit World Hunt contender and beat two of the best Walker dogs in the country at that time,World Ch. Pac Man and World Ch. Bama, to make it to the finals of the World Hunt. He was one of the favors at UKC to win it all that year. I'd say that Curly dog of Ed Meads was about the only one that year that could have given us a hard time but as luck would have it we drew out together on a really windy night in MO and lost the dogs during time out and got scratched.
As far as natural tracking ability I'd put his mom , Cane Spring Dawn, way up on the scale of legit cold nose track dogs of that era. I saw her move tracks that really good dogs couldn't smell and she did it almost every night. Guy Dehyne was a big name bluetick hunter in WI at that time and he used her for training his blue dogs. He absolutely loved her. He wouldn't give her back to Bill. lol Moon also impressed me at a year of age driving tracks away from good dogs. He was the most impressive natural track dog of all time and I know Alton Key would agree with me on that one. I heard that his uncle Chance owned by John Graves was that style of natural track dog as well. Harold Hartely told me many stories about what a great cold nose track dog Chance was and how he made Jessie and Billy Jo look silly some nights. He was a littermate to Outlaw Jessie and Outlaw Billy Jo.
I talked to Bill Wallock last summer and he said that Too the Max was also that style of track dog when he got older. I thought he peaked early at around 2-3 years old but from what Bill told me he kicked it in another gear when he hit 8 years old. lol Maybe Joe Maitland can give us his thoughts on him.
I raised Max from a pup until he was about a year old. He was the most natural tree dog I've ever raised but I didn't get to see much of his natural tracking abilities until he was about 2-3 years old. He was a track driving machine but I don't think he had the cold nose Moon had at that young age. I'd say Max was more of what I liked in a dog though, and more like his daddy Timber Jack in the types of tracks he took. He was a SS hunters dream at 2 years old. Max was a split treeing machine and jealous independent type, more than any of the dogs including TJ. Alger Morgan drew Max at Redbone Days the year he won and he was wanting one just like him. Said he was about as fast on track as any he's hunted. He was a great pressure tree dog too.
I also think these Redbones just get better with age. The Burning Ben dog we got from Roger Shabel and Donny Miller was really not that great of a track dog until he was 5-6 years old. Ben was a catch dog and caught more coon on the ground of any of the dogs we had up here. He ran silent when hunted by himself like his mom Betsy, but when hunted in competition he was a legit first strike dog. He was a skunk dog too. I think Bill had the market cornered on Skunk Off Spray when he had him there. Roger Gibson said his mom Millers Red Betsy was the same way and ran silent when hunted alone and was a fast strike dog in competition. She was one of the better dogs of that era too. Betsy was a daughter of Ramblin Red Ace.
