I have seen a couple of good winding coon treers in the last 45 years. I believe the difference was that the winding on told them that a coon was up close, then they checked trees to get the right one. Very rare. I also think that most dogs treeing slick are treeing on a tree that a coon only ran over the roots or up the side of a foot or so. I don't think coons climb up a tree 20 feet and then jump out to tap it. A dog that checks high on a tree and around the tree may not be super accurate but will be above 70%.

A few, very few, come along that make winding look easy and it's their go to ace in the hole. High, high, accuracy comes along with it.

And they are tough to beat for sure

No Nose No Accuracy!!
Its the dogs that are man made to blow in there deep that either ambush them a coon or miss. JMO the dogs that are using their noses are the ones that are more accurate.

My old bluetick female was the best coondog I ever owned. No competition dog at all. But best coondog I ever owned. She could show you which side of the tree the coon was on. I don't mean a little tree. I mean on a big one. But she was also loose at the tree enough sometimes that she could get minused in a hunt.

I have never seen any correlation in nose and locating ability. Or tracking ability. Or track speed. These are all separate traits and very hard to find in one dog.

If the nose ain't there, neither is the locating, tracking, track speed or accuracy.
