Once in a while but most of the time they tree the cat I put them on. If they get off on a different one most of them will go back and tree the first one if as long as I teach them that when they are young. Some do it naturally.

Dogs don't learn this very often unless the owner has enough time to be out all day on a regular basis. Weekenders don't have dogs like that normally.

It pays to work on this when they are young and are having their first critters released for them. Also, if you've got good snow (you usually do in your area) and you run with the dogs you can walk them back to passed over tracks...more work though.

If you have a dog that goes over 25% by itself in it's first season you might have something. Over 60% by it's 3rd season and now you deffinately have something. With the help of an older dog doesn't count.

Dan, have you ever had any experience with Gary Faulkner's line of curs? I spoke with him on the phone one time. Sounded interesting but I was not in the market for anything new.

I always thought if I was going to try something other than mountain curs on cats it would be a leopard. Maybe someday, just can't find a reason to change yet.

If you got something that works stick with it. Most of the fun is in the adventure.

I used to live close enough to Gary to see his barn from my house. He's up on a hill in Boyceville, Wi.

Back when I used to go to the cur & fiest hunts I drew Faulkners about 1/3 of the time. Never lost to one, coon or squirrel. Not even close on coon.

I used to have a fair number of dogs from Larry Albrecht and I liked those pretty well but I got off onto the cats and the leps whipped on those so I got out of them. That had more to do with the cold training and likeing an open dog. On a circling cat Larry's dogs are pretty good and good locators too.

Lol, Dan I didn't answer my question but you did. Thank you. If you ever get out this way I'd like to see them go. They sound like the real deal. I see you have Stags too. My buddy has a Wolfhound and a Deerhound and man it's fun watching them run a coyote. Wade, I don't know that young cats tree any easier. One thing it seem is that at least around here the females can get pretty slippery. A big tom has a bit of swagger and devil be ****ed and a lot of times they are in territory they are less familiar with when they are traveling looking for females. Little easier to get the jump on them it seems. The females have a much smaller home range and know every nook and cranny in the cliffs and where every rock pile or hole in the country is. A lot of times the females have been treed before and run multiple times. It doesn't take them long to learn all the tricks. There is no set rule. I've seen them pop up as soon as the dogs get close and I've seen some that will get in the rocks and I truly believe they enjoy toying with the dogs.

Kevin- If you guys will cross one of those stags on a border collie or some other smart dog that trees well, you'll have yourself a real time saver on those bobcats. They're not much for cold trailing but they sure do catch cats fast. I've been using a pair of those for a couple of years now and they are incredible.

He's been talking about trying to breed the wolfhound. He's a cool dog. He jumped out of the back of the truck this winter going after a coyote and got banged up bad. Don't know if he'll ever be able to run like he used to. Sure wassomething watching those dogs burn a coyote down.
