The world is full of all kinds of people, Some of them lead , Some of them follow and some need to just get out of the way. Go back in history, Someone tried something new that's why we all don't have to hunt the same dog today.

as an owner of both hounds and pointing dogs for decades, I like to think that I may have a little knowledge on the subject. If people want to coonhunt with a half shorthair than they are looking for something entirely different in a hound than I am.

You show me a half shorthair that suits me and you can change my mind.

I was actually looking for a GSP X hound cross to squirrel hunt with. Do you still have both breeds of dogs?

No, because I dont own or hunt GSPs. I dont like them for bird dogs.

If I wanted a squirrel dog, I would just go get a cur that has been bred to tree squirrels.

If I wanted a Rabbit dog I would go get a beagle that was bred to run rabbits,

If I wanted a retriever, I would go get a lab.

See where I am going here?

back some years Ed Mead came up to my farm bird
hunting and had a pup that he was training the pup
would get to winding a bird and when she got close
she would get down and crawl like a cat does on the track
and then hold point It was the first time I ever seen a bird
dog do that Ed told me he breed them that way
the pup was only 8 months old and hunted like she was a 6 year old dog
I always wonder if he might put some of that in his blueticks cuz the ones I got from where all good lay up dogs and always run with there head up into the wind

DeWayne Edmondson's "Meg" gyp was out of a walker x Britney cross. single registered as an English. I hunted a lot behind her and several of the pups out of her and GRNTCH Cox's Cooner.

Meg was a 1 man dog, but when DeWayne was handling her she was a coondog.

I was also backup handler on every cast her son NTCH Edmondson's Dan was entered in. Dan was to this day the best rig dog I have ever witnessed. We used him as a pup trainer for years driving back roads and casting pups on tracks he struck from sometimes 50+miles an hr. we worked 8-10 pups a month using him like that and got some nice pups started.

it dont matter what dog you hunt or how they are breed its mostly all on you what time you put in it and tring to show them what you expect of them i aint been around as long as alot of these guys have been around im only 26 years old but i have seen alot of things that will hunt for some one i have seen a pug that would whip anything with hair on it go in holes pull ground hogs out and coon or what ever was in that hole when i was in grade school we had a fox terrior that me and my little brother had trained to where we coould take her and kill what ever we wanted to she may not have treed as hard as my old hounds but man she was fun seen a guy have a rott that trees squirel in the woods like a tree dog thats kind funny to see but if you spend the time with them and i mean time which other guys i think will agree you can get dogs to do just about what you want them to do now are there greater dogs than what you got yes and there is flaus in all of them its just what you like the next guy might think your dog is just a pile of sh** but hey its your dog you feed it so you cant really go off what every body says one guy says one thing another says diff and also depends on where you live i believe if you cant have a big old hound in your house because its small and you live in town then get you a small dog fiest terrior what ever you want just spend the time to make it what you want jmo

I've seen enough pure breed culls in the last 5 years to know it's not all in the training. They either got the right tools or they don't.I would think if you started mixing completely differant dogs the amount of culls would skyrocket.Im sure every once in awhile there would be a special one pop out.Im with Josh if you want a squirrel dog why not just by a squirrel dog.Would save yourself a lot of hassle.

Deer hunters in CA have bred and used hound x bird dog crosses for decades.

I already have a mnt cur, she trees sqs and coons. I used to own a "Treeing cur" that was a mnt cur crossed on walker. Had tons of drive good noes but didn't really want to tree all that much for me. I like the mnt cur crosses, what I was just wondering was if you could cross a walker on a GSP then cross that back to a mnt cur what I might end up with. But like I said, there is only one guy I know that knows all the right answers and God hasn't shared that with me yet.

What I have learned about GSPs are that the are very versatile dogs and the few I have seen hate sqs and coons. My neighbor down the road send me a pix of his dog treed with the meat. His GSP was Treeing just like my cur, he shot it out to him and he tore into that sq. His dog was fixed though or I wouldn't of posted this.

The way I understand it Keith has won the world squirrel hunt 9 times with a stock of dog that is crossed up with bird dog in it. For all that say it won't work bring your cur and hunt then against Keith's line of squirrel dogs. He said he use to love drawing curs. He also told me they would tree coons during the day time. I went to a bird dog field trail one time. Blew my mind how athletic them dogs were. Breed to the right hound and everything worked right you could come up with one more weapon with adding more bird dog. Imagine a hound that covered miles of ground in 20 minitues that never got over 1000 yards.

nothing

Unless you like training dogs to tree....we are past that now...30-40 years ago you had to actually train dogs to tree ( not all but most)...now, that is not the issue

when i was a kid growing up in the 70s my dad had a walker pointer cross female called bucky and a redbone irish setter cross called rastas. bucky was a engislh tpye looking dog and rastas was cold black. these 2 dogs was squirell treeing machines in the day time and coon treeing machines at night. when they barked it was true and when they treed it was there, not even a maybe. we caught upwards of 100 coons every year with these dogs. i have coon hunted every since with all types of dogs and have never seen a better dog than those 2. they are legends in our area yet today. the tales that can be told, the pictures and the memories are price less. my once in a life time dogs came early. the night before my dad died this past winter i told him when he gets to heaven tell ma we miss her and give bucky and rastas a pat on the head. this is the last thing i got to tell him and i cried like a baby just as i'm doing now. tim figg
