Alright guys I think you are both a right

First off I will not hunt a dead Loner. That type dogs is not for me and not much fun to pleasure hunt with buddy's. I do like a dog that is independent but not a dead loner! They must take tracks as he prefers or as they come, with or without company. The secret is to finding a good mix between the two. Boone is not the best or fastest in the woods at times but what he does is try to find coons and getting better at it every year. He knows that's what I want him to do and try's to please who is hunting him. I would put him in a new category called an "Independant Leader". He will let others hunt with him, but you recut in a woods he goes the way he wants to find a coon. If others want to follow that's fine, but if they don't he going to do his thing. Even if he hasn't opened and others are running or treeing he usualy doesn't come in to the "pack." He will continue to do what he prefers.

Here my area this is the "type dog" I prefer to hunt and train. You all have many more years of experience than I do and maybe I'm just a greenhorn but this seems to work for me and so far any place I go.

So I guess it's just what you want, A Loner, A pack hunter, or An "Indepentant Leader". These are the catagories that sum it for me.

Where is Shane on this one???

Leader-------Loner, shoot. Call me greedy, but I want both in my mutts. I want them by themselves when theres more then one coon to be had and I want them to be able to lead the pack when theres only one coon. Above all I agree with John on the statement that they need to hunt for themselves and not have a thought in their mind to what the other dogs are doing.

Loner or Leader

Ive heard it all now.lol I once was told Jack hunted past too many coon in a night hunt when he won a cast in TN, I asked that person if the other dogs treed those coon he passed up. The score card showed that they didn't. It was hot dry weather and coon where not easy to tree... Im learning from this thread.. Very entertaining

scotty

I look at it from both sides, if a dog is getting treed here deep with a coon a person from a different hunting terrain might see it as a dog that is a "loner" at the same time if that same dog that's known as a loner draws pack dogs he may be looked at as a "leader" does that make sense? I don't like to jockey for position on tree's so for me to be happy I guess I've got to have both "loner" and "leader" this is a very interesting conversation. Jack once swam the white river and got treed, they had to drive all the way around to get him, he had that coon and from what I was told he treed a few more with the guys who's dogs covered him b4 the guys hunting him got over there. This thread has me scratching my head a little. Lol

Preston!
You said a mouthful!!! What some are after is a leader or a loner depending on who owns it, is all I can figure out! I totally agree with what you just stated!! Good post!

john

Now that we agree can you join "Team Fireball" lol just kidding man. I think I pretty well summed up what I have seen based off rumors, comments etc on the old plugs I've been hunting the last few years. There are lots of good redbone's that can get it done but I've found out 1st hand that a "loner" or "leader" won't get the good females brought in,in our breed. It's a real shame too.

Loners!

It was posted that in the interest of fairness, that a couple loners should be listed. It was Calli & Jackie! I think that Calli was 7th in the UKC World Hunt one year, & Jackie was 4th! I guess you can make your choice based on fairness! TEAM REDBONE!!

I have always heard that dogs were just like people... Are some people "loners", some "leaders" and some "pack people"?

I hear ya man, theres nothing worse than having to argue over folks striking in on the 1st dog that opens and having 2 or 3 guys treeing off the 1st locate they hear in the woods. And its a fact that it happens, deep and alone or treed way ahead is the way to win..

Of course, this is not a perfect world. Sometimes ..."People".... will show varying degrees of being a loner or a leader. Sometimes..."people"... will change as they grow/mature. Sometimes a leader will become a loner as he/she matures because of his/her experiences with the pack. This is usually referred to as being "hunt sour". Sometimes a pack/cast will have 2 or even 3 leaders in it and they won't get along. One or more of the leaders will decide to become a loner.

I don't know if I am comprehending this post right but are you saying that not very many people with good females want to breed to a "loner"? If so, I wonder why that is?

how about the

You boy's forgot one. That is the "no minus dog". Those hounds that finish the tracks they start and don't slick with the other kind of hounds out there. They don't babble and they aren't silent either. they don't leave once they tree and they stay out of trouble. Plus they tree real live coon. Let me just say this ,find a " leader" that is also a" no minus dog" and they are very hard to beat no matter what else you bring to the hunts. The only way I see a "Leader-no-minus" type loose is if they draw the "Gator".

You got that right! The loners and the leaders get the job done alone or in company......but pack rats always follow the action created by others who are doing the real work.....

WINNER

Is one that gets its own, gets part of or all of the others. ACTION PACKED!
I don't care if they do it alone or in the pac. As long as they get it first.
JMO, A hound that spends to much time just to get alone ain't gona roll up a big score.
I have owned a dead loner. I won a good bit with him. But he wasn't a big score dog. But he was the most accurate I ever owned.
I say, put in what cha like. Take what cha get. And be a good sport, win or lose.
Good luck to you all.

I wouldn't do it Allen but I've heard straight out of several folks mouths that's been on cast with the big hunt winners that all it took was dog boxes & several other things to win the whole hunt. It's crazy how it don't take a rediculous score to have high score at AO since it is elimination style hunt now, I'm not gunna say no more. Good Luck & Good Hunting!
