In Todd K's original post: "...the scoring of "circles" has been an issue..."
The inconsistency of what constitutes a circle is at the heart of the issue. It seems the focus is to eliminate inconsistencies in judging. I believe there are added benefits to timed lines. One example: Two casts. 1st pack takes a rabbit out and back in a big field with checkerboard lanes cut. After the first big "U", which is after the rabbit goes out and back then crosses the lane where jumped, it is scored. Then it goes way out and back on the other side of the lane and crosses where it could have been shot again, score it again. Two "U" s or one actual circle!? Scored twice.
Second pack in big woods runs as big of circle as first cast but rabbit crosses at top of hill after first half but too far away to shoot. No score. After second half of circle the rabbit crosses near jump/cast and is scored. Just as much hound work but one line scored. Or, if the track ends in a loss before the "circle" is completed, no line points and no jump points. Timed lines would be a benefit to consistent scoring in that scenario.
The discussion drifted some in determining when to score the first line. Most see an advantage in giving the pack a bit more time from the 1st dog struck until the first line in comparison to the second and third line.
It is speculation as to which type of dog will benefit. IMO the dogs that jump a lot of rabbits, stay accurate on the line, and run with good speed in relation to scenting conditions, will continue to dominate. Consistency in judging/scoring will be a benefit to the best and most consistent beagles.
