I like the idea of giving them time at the beginning of the track. If a change is made it would be best to get rid of the word "circle" and state exactly what is meant.
Example:
The pack will be eligible to score the first line of the track: a) after the dog or dogs have moved the track away from the cast and then brought it back to the area where it was jumped.
b) If the rabbit does not return to the area of the jump and the cast needs to move to mark a line then the line will be considered available and can be marked as soon as the rabbit is seen.

I'm sure that can be improved on but the general idea is to put into writing exactly what is meant by the new rule.

After rereading Todd K post, I believe he is not wanting to have timed lines to give more scoring opportunities but to allow dogs to establish a track. You notice I did not say circle as I believe Todd K's idea doesn't necessarily concern or is intended to establish a circle. If this is correct then I think it could be a great idea if a balance can be achieved. Not bad for a bird dog guy. LOL!!!

In Todd K's original post: "...the scoring of "circles" has been an issue..."

The inconsistency of what constitutes a circle is at the heart of the issue. It seems the focus is to eliminate inconsistencies in judging. I believe there are added benefits to timed lines. One example: Two casts. 1st pack takes a rabbit out and back in a big field with checkerboard lanes cut. After the first big "U", which is after the rabbit goes out and back then crosses the lane where jumped, it is scored. Then it goes way out and back on the other side of the lane and crosses where it could have been shot again, score it again. Two "U" s or one actual circle!? Scored twice.
Second pack in big woods runs as big of circle as first cast but rabbit crosses at top of hill after first half but too far away to shoot. No score. After second half of circle the rabbit crosses near jump/cast and is scored. Just as much hound work but one line scored. Or, if the track ends in a loss before the "circle" is completed, no line points and no jump points. Timed lines would be a benefit to consistent scoring in that scenario.

The discussion drifted some in determining when to score the first line. Most see an advantage in giving the pack a bit more time from the 1st dog struck until the first line in comparison to the second and third line.

It is speculation as to which type of dog will benefit. IMO the dogs that jump a lot of rabbits, stay accurate on the line, and run with good speed in relation to scenting conditions, will continue to dominate. Consistency in judging/scoring will be a benefit to the best and most consistent beagles.

That sounds good Dan! heck Dan if more cast would stand near where the rabbit was "jumped" instead of chasing down the rabbit or trying to "cut the rabbit off" to score the rabbit as soon as it turns to come back we wouldn't even be having this discussion. Seems like most casts/ Judges have the idea if you want to score more you need to chase the rabbit down. I kill more rabbits by staying in the general area where the rabbit was jumped. The only time while hunting that I move to get a shot on a rabbit is when it bust out and circles 3 or so times and does not seem to want to come back to the original spot it was jumped. But that's just me. This is " Hunting Beagle" format right?

Score every minute from the time the first dog is struck. Be consistant on all casts that way.. Doesn't mean you will score every minute but gives a solid guideline.
