Since 2001, Costas has been the co-host of the Kentucky Derby.[7] Since 1995, Costas has also hosted NBC's coverage of the U.S. Open golf tournament.[8]

I'm not saying costas isn't on TV lol. I'm saying he isn't as previlent as he once was and should not be considered the face of NBC. Lol. He is a small guy in the grand scheme of the sports world. I know he is on tv but not enough for you to give him the title of face of NBC lol. He does a little of this and a little of that but is still a small part of Sunday football.

he is the host of FOOTBALL NIGHT IN AMERICA, one hour pregame show before every sunday football night game, also: Prior to the Wild Card Saturday doubleheader a half-hour version of Football Night in America is aired with in depth preview of the first game, and during the afternoon halftime a version of the Sunday Night Football halftime show is shown. After the conclusion of the afternoon game and before the kickoff of the night game, a version known in 2007 as the Diet Pepsi Bridge Show is shown.

NBC was the rightsholder to Super Bowl XLVI, and a five-hour show was telecast at 1 PM US EST/10 AM US PST before the game for the second straight Super Bowl NBC has aired. Bob Costas and Dan Patrick anchored the pregame, halftime, and postgame shows

along with that he hosts the KENTUCKY DERBY, US OPEN FOR GOLF, AND LIKE 9 OLYMPICS. those are like some the biggest spectacles in sports across a large spectrum of sports.

he also CURRENTLY HOSTS
2008–present: AMP Energy NHL Winter Classic Host[26]
2009–present: MLB Network Studio 42 with Bob Costas Host, Thursday Night Baseball Play-by-play

he has done play by play for NBA finals and world series.

he is not a small fish in sports. name another sports analyst/host that has his credentials across so many sports at the highest of levels and still going strong. if not him, then WHO?

If you read up on Phil and Kay, they married young I figure that was what he was drawing on when making that statement. As far as the predator types, they would have seconds to make a case , figure it would be losing battle once started and a short one at that .

The stuff such as the baseball show isn't on NBC. Yes he was an authority in the sports world. But all the stuff he used to do doesn't make him the current face of NBC. He does an hour gig on football night in America big deal that hardly makes him the face of an entire network. I would say Chris berman is more of an authority in the sports world in this day and age. Again I'm talking current not past. You keep saying stuff like he was the or he used to. Name all the stuff he currently does then do some research on Berman. Heck there are females that cover more things than costas at this time.

Freedom of speech is freedom of speech but I guess it only matters if you agree with what the person is speaking. If Phil being canned would be violating his freedom of speech how would costas being fired be any different?

I don't think Phil's freedom of speech was violated. Everyone is responsible for their choices. Phil for his, A&E for theirs. Looks like A&E drew a line in the sand they couldn't defend.

A few yearly gigs, 1 monthly gig, and a weekly gig for 17 weeks, and the olympics....Im sorry, but to me that does not spell face of NBC.In reality that is not a lot of air time...You are certainly entitled to your opinion though.

is costas the face of nbc is debatable, but you trying to state he plays a small role in their programming, especially sports is not.
others who might be could be the hosts of the today show or nbc nightly news, but when 9 out of the top 10 tv events for the year were sporting events, that just shows how important sports is to a network

and lastly add up the amount of total viewers watching those 17 weeks of sunday night football and wild card weekedn, the kentucky derby, the us open, nhl winter classic and the almost month long olympics and then you will see the real impact of how many people he directly represents nbc to

I see alot of dan patrick, I also see alot of Al Michaels. Not to say they actually host more events, but it seems like they get more actual air time.

This whole conversation started because I ask a question about why did costas get back lash, but Phil got support..Your answer to that...He was THE FACE OF THE NETWORK. Im not gonna argue with you about what sports events he host, or how much TV time he actually gets...The fact is, he isnt the face of the entire NBC network, and you actually said in a few above posts that it was a stretch saying he is the face of the network..There are tons of people who get WAY more tv time than Costas. Jay Leno does, Matt Lauer does, Tom Brokaw, Lester Holt, Al Roker to name a few

costas hosts way more nbc events then them 2, and dan patrick will alwyas be thought of as an espn guy and al michaels will always be linked to abc john madden an MNF.

where did i say it was a strecch, i said it was debatable. he is the face of nbc sports and that means it could be debated he is the face of nbc. regardless as much as nbc chooses him to cover large sporting events, his opinion could be seen as NBC's, as with phil, he is just a reality tv star on A&e, big difference.

and its not the quantity of the tv time, but the quality. how many viewers are watching during that period. big difference between quantity of tv time and total viewership

Bottom Line ...Phil had every right to answer a question in a magazine interveiw with his own opinion he has a right granted to him by the contitution . GQ already knew how he was going to answer . A&E has every right to fire or suspend him in our capitalist society it was their right . When over a million Americans protested their action they saw fit to change their discission - a business discission in the best interest of their network . Even though I'm sure they disagree w/ him & his family on many veiw points they probably just got a big eye opening of how conservative the base veiwership of this program is and much to their dismay many agree with him on his veiws on homosexuality & would have boycotted their entire network had he not been re-enstated .
As for TV news personallities they have the same freedom of speach rights given to all the rest of us , but while on the job they should report the news - whether it's sports or world news - that is their job . Their network has the right to censor (or not ) the personal opinions of their employees while reporting the news even though they have the right to freedom of speech when not behind the desk . If we disagree with them - change the chanel no one is forced to watch any program . And trackdriver many people marry young just like Phil & Miss Kay did she did not marry an old man . In my grandma's time if a woman married wasn't married by 18 she was an old maid . My Great Grandmother moved my Grandma to town @ 18 , she was worried she would never find a husband . All 5 of her sisters were married between the ages of 14 & 18 . Now we wish for our daughters to get an education , go to college & be as self sufficient as possible not relying on a man & barefoot & pregnant but that's not the way it has always been . Though the road was difficult for some , many more had a long happy marriage . I have a picture of my grandma & grandpa along with 5 of her siblings that were married over 50 years published in our local paper .

Well from what I hear duck dynasty was the most viewed show in cable television HISTORY. Reality show or not, biggest show on A&E, and for whatever reason other grown men seem to idiolize phil robertson...So with your logic of thinking, its not out of line for me to say if Costas opinion cound be seen as NBC opinion, Phils opinion could be seen as A&E opinion as well...You cant have it both ways, that is what my arguement is/was...You cant holler and scream freedom of speech for Phil if you dont agree with a homosexual lifestyle, but say costas should be fired if you dont agree with stricter gun laws. Freedom of speech is just that...Freedom to say what you want about anything you want, however as we all know, there could be backlash, or reprocussions if you choose to excercise your freedom of speech rights. You cannot be for or against a mans freedom of speech based on if you agree or disagree with what he is speaking about. Its hipocrisy to the fullest.

We all just need to sit back, relax, think for a minute, and say, "What would Phil do?" There would be a lot less people looking for a hand out.
