As coonhunters , is the color of ahound more important then there ability? I would certainly enjoy a top plott hound over a common walker.Dirtdevil how does color play in to this, why the obvious struggle with the quest for excellence, and color appears to be the major factor? The winningest lines of black dogs have had questionable parentage gossip surrounding them over the years.Whats the issue?

Nice post. I think the biggest problem is breeding, not that we aren't breeding good hounds but take a step back breeders now days won't breed some females because they don't have a title, years ago people bred for coondogs and didn't mind breeding PR females, coondogs make titles, titles don't make coondogs and a title will not make a dog reproduce, if that's the case then buck2 is the greatest reproducers the breed has seen.

Varaiety is good , you gotta have it ... the more you have , the longer you can go without having to crossbreed again , lol.

If you hunt Walkers , you can find a World Champion in any color pattern you want ... and they and the English guys are breeding World Champions together and if you can afford it .. you can have one of those in an assortment of colors.

The problem aint color .. it's when there was only ever one good dog in the color you like ... just like breeding to Brock's Hobo or Hobo's Hoss alot ... if you like that style , surely there are others you can breed to .. if there are and you can't see it ... or there aren't and the only way you can have a wood monster is to breed to the only B&T that ever was .... then that breed or line is not playing in the same league as Walkers are .

There has never been as many tight bred dogs of different lines as now .. Hobo's Hoss , Smokey , Ace , etc ... each group has found a clique and is inbreeding the heck out of them ...

Is it working ? You can find a dog from each line to prove it is ... and another to prove it aint ... but , I think it's fair to say that if kennel blindness was ever a problem in the past ... it's worse now.

I think we gotta start with having a dog we like to hunt and believe in first ... no matter what you do with them .... right now , it seems like there are way too many guys not hunting a dog that makes them happy .. or is up to the standard of a dog they used to have ...... and it shows in how much the breed is pushing these dogs .... it shows in how many new guys are coming into the breed ... and it shows in the general flavor of all the discussions on the boards , hunts and coffee shops ...

Instead of asking what stud is the best , where frozen semen is or how to improve ... let's ask just how many of us are happy with what we have and are motivated to get out and hunt as much as they can because they are having fun !

I know I'm not happy with my old dog that's why I have 3 pups at home to replace her. I want a dog that will keep me out all night treeing coon wether they are out and about or not. I will let you know if I'm happy with these pups in 6 months or so. I sure hope so.

Dirtdevel, Several times you discussed roosters, fighting ones I guess. You have done some breeding with them?Did you also compete with them? Some what the same as breeding hounds and competition hunting?Or totally different.

Yeah , I'm a fourth generation cocker/hunter .. that I know of.

Roosters are the most similiar ... because you are looking for a balance of ability and the brains to adjust to each situation , along with personality ... race horses and greyhounds not so much , just speed involved ... or like milk cows or beef cattle .. they don't have to be both like a coondog.

Selection and speed of results , along with the fact that livestock of any kind aren't pets or bark in the pen ... have let alot of other types of breeding get way beyond us.

And even in Europe with their hunting breeds that belong to clubs ... they have a longer chain of families breeding dogs , they have stricter tests before registering and breeding .. and store results on cd's that analyze patterns and inheritence of traits.

Coondogs are new , there is no formal testing to qualify breeding stock and no unity in our goals.

The best and most successful livestock breeders , genetisits and so forth .. would not even think about using a coondog to prove their ideas on genetics .... our stock and math would make Mendel look like a moron ...

I would have to disagree with you on 0ne thing Dirtdevil,as far as race horses go. A smart race horse will out run a faster one on a regular basis, maybe not so much with the Q.Horse,as most their races are short bursts of speed, with no rating involved.

I would guess the rooster who constantly wins is to be considered good breeding stock? The other probably dies right on the spot so he is weeded from the genetic pool?another example of competition, and selecting good breeding stock with competition as a guide.
