I already posted on page 1 but this thread got me thinking on how come I can hardly remember the last time I had a pup or old dog tree a possum. I hunted walkers for many years and treed a few but not many possums and it didn't really bother me unless they treed a possum back of the other side of a swamp I had just toted a coon back across. As time went on the walkers I kept messed with less and less possums. I never really understood why they were treeing coons across the swamp when there was coons on this side of the swamp so I started trying some mountain curs and don't remember a possum with them and I assumed it was because By the time they would tree they already knew I was after coons. Then I did the same thing with leopard hound/curs. I started them with my walkers that were getting old by then and they have never messed with any trash. The old walker finally died and I have been using Leopards to train pups for about three generations now. I know I better knock on wood. If I had the type of pups that ignored the old dogs like they were deaf I might have a big problem but again , by the time they do anything on their own they already have had a good many coons in their mouth so I think they pretty well know what we are hunting for and leave other stuff alone.. I ought not be posting on a breaking thread.

I heard ammonia would break one! Most affective way to get the dog an possome soaked in ammonia togther?

the old school way when they tree 1 tie them back shoot it out and beat them with it till they think they gonna die if they got any sense they wont ever tree another 1 jmo

Never shoot it out , that's a tried and true rule that pre-dates what most think is old school ... it goes back to what God wrote on the back of that tablet the ten commandments were wrote on ...

im a part time hunter now im 62 and in the early stages of parkisons diease but now when i was younger i hunted abot every night it was fit and some that man nor beast should have been out i hunted with my granpap when i was a little fellar when he passed i started getting my own dogs ive owned hounds and beagles for 48 yrs so ive done alot of hunting in my life we didnt have a shock collar back when i was young we had to run em down head off and go to beatin on i did invest in a schock collar about 7 yrs ago it does make things easier but i wont shock a dog on a tree i keep reading these post i might learn something from you younger gen of hunters aint be a smart butt just telling you what kind of hunter i am or was till my health went south now i need a flashlight dog so i can keep up lol

I had a bitch was treeing possums and i pulled her aside, held her face up close to mine and pinched my thumbnails into ears for about 20 seconds then then stared into her eyes for about five minutes without letting her turn away. Theres something about forcing a dog to look you in the eye. She never treed another possum.

P.S. My dog had been vocally corrected a few times before, so she knew better.

I have broke hounds from treeing opposums several different ways. Had good luck running a broke dog with the possum dog and using tri-tronics if the broke dog didn't join in. The Garmin has assisted in making sure the old dog has checked things out. I never shoot out anything to my pups except coon. I may turn out on a possum and shock the dog for catching one. I have shocked a dog after throwing a live possum in the dog box with them. That works pretty good on breaking one. The hard headed or dump dogs are tough to break sometimes.

drive over possum with truck back up 100 ft get dog out of box walk him to it then let the 3200 sport dog do its thing . that way your not messing with dog around tree.

Over the years I've found several fresh killed possums that I never heard a bark on so I figure some hounds learned it was OK to give em a quick shake and go on as long as they didn't get caught doing it.

Try the cage posum in the kennel trick. It works. I'v done it befor for a frinds dog & this dog WAS the best dang possum dog this side of the mississippi. (JMO)
