if my dog goes left and finds a coon a half mile away and yours goes right and has to go out of hearing to find one, i was way lucky.
if we both tree a couple coon, the "luck" factor diminishes a bit. jmo

Agreed. Let's take all the luck out of the equation. The thinner the coon the better. Have the world hunt in Death Valley, CA. I doubt you can find any area with thinner coon!

as an almost 400 pound man. i like to hunt these hills i dont run up an down them like some do but it is fun i take my time and enjoy myself. now for the part that you all are actually in disagreement about it does not take a better dog to tree coons here . it may take a dog with a better heart and set of legs. the handler better be in shape.

Exactly CG sometimes you tree in a matte of seconds. First night of season we didn't walk very far at all. Had four in two different trees

Guys I've hunted in about 8 different states I know of , and I've had better luck in these hills than anywhere else . Just seems I don't draw the right people , we tree coon but seems 200 , 175 , etc. we scored 375 two years ago in the Allen shoe hunt at walker days but didn't get back before deadline . My last three casts here in wv I've won my scores where 333 1/3 , 375 , 827 1/4 , so wv can produce some nice scores , but will they hold it here , probably no , but one can hope .

IMO, a high score doesn't mean you have a good coon dog, a me too dog and a slick handler can put on a high score. But when you're in an area that doesn't have as high of a population, it's harder to be a slick handler if the dogs don't strike right off the lead. As we've all experienced, when you train dogs to be independant, if they have to go a couple hundred yards to find a track, most times they won't stay together as a cast. I'm not sayin that the dogs from states like ohio, indiana and other midwest states aren't as good as dogs from the south or states with thinner population but I think the dogs from those areas are just more conditioned to the nights of lots of runnin around to find a track instead of bein dropped into a corn field onto some hot tracks. I just don't understand why the emphasis is being put on scores and what can be put up in our state when the winning score this year was so low. It doesn't matter where its held, some people are gonna complain and the others are gonna be happy, in the end, no matter where it is, the guys who know they have a dog that can legitmately compete will make the trip no matter where it is.

Only real men are coonhunters..WVA is beautiful country but you have to related to a mountain goat to hunt there..It has nothing to do with hound power. A coonhound is a coonhound in any country. Michigan or Ohio is my vote.

If it's not held n flat corn country the guides r goin to have portable corn fields. That's a fact so either ur goin to hunt corn fields or feeder buckets n q hunt no matter where u go
