Instead of fighting over this how about us hunters and showers stick together and fight these anti hound folks.. This new usda breeders thing is outrageuos. We might not agree on how we use our hounds but we all agree we want to KEEP our hounds. So lets let these little things slide by for a while and fight the ones that are trying to TAKE AWAY our hounds!!!

who would you want to put show stock in their hunting stock ...i for one won't... i buy and bred to have both , hunt and show traits .
it's hard to take a hunting dog and dual ch. or dual gr him or her with your up againest hounds that are house dogs that never get dirty or scratched ..don't like it but to each there own !!!

Ill probly never show in a big show like oaks or the world, but i show at our local clubs mainly beacause i like to do it a little bit, and because if we dont support or local clubs they will die just like the pkc hunts around here. I dont want to drive 2 hrs every weekend to go to a hunt. If they want to just show there dogs let them. you dont have to buy a pup out of their dogs. and im sure that anyone who wants to breed a good female for the purpose of producing hunting dogs will not breed his/her female to them either. jmo

I've shown a few times at the national level, never really got a second look, mostly did it for fun!

When I go to a local hunt, or even state/national event, I'll show what I'm gonna hunt that night. I've done my share of losing and winning. The BIGGEST reason I would rather hunt than show is that the reason I WIN OR LOSE at a show is more because of someones opinion picks the winner, in a hunt, my dog has to really outperform the others to win. Now don't get me wrong, there are lots of shows where all the dogs are basically equal. That's where OPINION comes in, whatever the judge likes gets the win. In a hunt, it falls on my dogs ability to win.

A lot of people will holler about cheating in the hunts yadda yadda but when you've been in enough to know that the good hunts far outweigh the bad. I've been on some real doozy casts but those are normally far and few between, and it really helps to have a decent dog at the end of your leash.

Lately I've just resorted to pleasure hunting. My dogs please me, (and sometimes I'd just like to blast em) we tree a few and come home and I still have a few $ in my pocket. With all that said....I'm still headed to a hunt tonight.

who ever said we couldnt hunt a pretty hound...if i see something in a hound that i like and it pleases me why should anybody else give a rats-A$$ about what i do with my hounds your not the ones feeding them i am...I hunt and show all my hounds and take consideration in both hunting traits and conformation before i make a cross

Back when I got into coonhunting I started out witha grade walker female that wasnt a good looker but was an awesome treedog shot out a lot of coon to that dog and had a lot of fun .Then i got smart and got a Black and Tan LOL that was my first reg coondog he was awesome at striking out of the box and was dead accurate a few people told me how good looking he was and that I should start to show him . At that time I didnt give two s#&%* about showing dogs and thought it was pointless and dumb all i wanted to do was tree some coon, but I tried it anyway and have been hooked ever since .I love to hunt my dogs comp and pleasure been in some bad casts but had alot more fun casts made some friends and met a few buttholes along the way.The bottom line is that I love to compete with my dogs and the bench shows are just another way for me to do that besides in the woods. My dogs have won and lost at the national level shows but they sure dont have anything to hide in the woods, I will show them in the woods any time. Back in 2010 my dad won opposite sex overall at AO with a 9 and a half year old dog that was missing a third of his ear and had some battle scars on him some times it matters other times it dont just have to have a good dog and the right judge on the right day.

i'd hate too see yah out in the woods if showing a hound gives u a work out haha.

My opinion..... Do what you enjoy doing, if its hunting or showing. I mostly show and I could really care less what anyone thinks of that. Its what I enjoy and not a Dang one of yous ganna change that lol.

Thanks

Good post. I'm glad it has remained civilized. I have always hunted and never shown until about a month ago. I found it to be fun but a lot of work if you do it right. I encourage everybody to give it a try.
For the show folks that don't want to take a chance on exposing their hounds to an aggressive dog during a competition hunt, you do have an alternative. Take it to an HTX event. It hunts alone. Just a thought.

Stay active.

Exactly Dale, why do some folks have to try and tell others what they should do with their dogs? Whether I choose to hunt or show is my business and mine only.

I am with every one on this that says its up to the owner of the dog what they do with it. And not every one wants to night hunt. I like that kids can show dogs at any show. Thhey are on same level as some one who has hunted 30 years, the can water race and it dont mater if they started doing it yesterday, they can do feald triles and it dont matter if they started yesterday. If every one would quit looking at it as a show dog a water dog a nigt dog a felid dog stand togther take there kids or a kid from town or just one that is there and say hay show my dog race my dog our sport would grow. we would have more dule dogs out there. so just stop with it and give little jimmy old tree monsters lead and get a kid to love hounds.

Anymore, it doesn't seem to matter whether you hunt OR show...there are just as many people on either side wanting to get in your business about what THEY "think" you do or don't do with your dogs. I do both, although I feel more comfortable showing dogs at the state and national level than I do competition hunting even locally that much yet. I do have a handful of "show dogs" that will tree a coon, and a handful more of ugly ole' dogs that will tree one too. I used to let it get me worked up when people ragged me about what they "thought" I did with my dogs, but after listening to one individual (who's opinon about hunting OR showing dogs is of no consequence to me) repeatedly insinuate that a couple pups I kept (and a dog that nobody else could handle but me anyway) were "wasted" at my house I finally said screw what anyone else "thinks." Do I get to hunt 6 or 7 nights a week? No. Are there weeks that I don't get to go at all? Sure. I work for a living. It isn't feasible for me to be out late several nights during a work week, especially during times of the month that I may work 10 or 12 hour days. I do go as much as I possibly can. I know that is the case for many folks. BUT, I don't think it's fair to judge others when none of us really know how, when, or how often anyone else is fooling with their dogs. When I bought my first hound, I didn't even know that there was such a thing as a bench show, and didn't know much at all about the night hunts. But you know, I had more fun hunting with that first bluetick, my first "nice" Walker, and starting my buddy Waylon than I have in several years. Back then it was just my fiance' and I, and maybe a couple friends that even knew we had coon dogs. There wasn't pressure or judgement from "dog people" like it seems I have now that more folks know us. If you don't learn how to tune out the negativity, all the "fun" can get drained from hunting OR showing dogs. I don't wish that on anyone, especially newcomers or young folks.

I personally am going to keep doing what I'm doing, regardless of the jaw jacking that goes on. Hopefully more folks can adopt the same attitude.

This debate will never be settled... but since I have a free moment here is my two cents....

Form is directly relation to function and vice versa.

I don't think it's fair to compare an "AKC type" Black & Tan to a "UKC type". Anyone with eyes can see the obvious differences and yes there are dual registered dogs that win both ways but for the vast majority they could almost be two different breeds. Same with Labradors and Poodles. The majority of AKC show bred Labradors could not hold up to seasons of hunting and field trials due to the bone structure of their head has been so changed by breeding for the "hyped type show ring dog" they can no longer fit a goose in their mouth. How sad when they are a RETRIEVER ?? Our Lab is a UKC show champion, a UKC Hunting Retriever Champion, and passes to his AKC Junior Hunter title. He has CORRECT WORKING FORM, does his job well, and that is what I, as an owner/handler/breeder strive for.

I now turn my attention to my hounds. They are DUAL bred. A review of their 4 generation pedigrees will reveal a bloodline of both show and hunt titled hounds. They have a high level of conformation combined with natural game instinct, intelligence, and trainability. If they don't make the grade on all four, I don't feed them and I sure don't breed them.

I'm personally not a competition hunter due to the few I participated in left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth and a couple scars on my dog. Stuff happens, I won't condem or uphold an entire sport based on my personal experience. I enjoy pleasure hunting and yes, I have friends that will handle my dogs in hunts (once I deem my dogs ready) because they enjoy them. I enjoy the shows (bench and conformation) water races, field trials, weight pulls, dock jumping, and rally obedience. Our dogs do all of the above and do it well. We train for a variety of events and travel a lot of miles BECAUSE WE ENJOY IT.

I feel any working breed of dog (and yes, especially a hound) should demonstarte the natural ability and desire to do the work they were bred to do. But there is no reason they should not have proper conformation to go along with it. Some breeders will breed for high level hunt, some for high level show, some for dual dogs (and oh how I respect you) but at our house we breed for multi purpose dogs

Better the breed and respect your fellow competitors.
