Rip, I think it is a fair argument to have whether this is a tax or not. I think not, you think so. But your challenge is that neither Obama NOR Romney think it is a tax. Romney has made numerous statements over the years defending the health care system that he put in place as Governor, saying that it is not a tax. His campaign staff are pushing that message. So you have a choice between voting for two candidates who believe the same thing on this issue. Both have put the same health care system in place, one at a state level, one national.

After Chief Justice John Roberts handed down his ruling that the individual mandate requirement in the Affordable Care Act fell under Congress’ power to tax, the question of whether Republicans were taking advantage of calling it a tax or insisting the ruling was wrong to call it that has continued into today, when senior Mitt Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom insisted the mandate, according to the candidate, was not a tax, and that he disagreed with the Court’s ruling calling it such.
Truly, the SCOTUS ruled that the only way it was anywhere close to legal is if it was a TAX. They have openly said it is a TAX. Oprama doesn't like it but that's what it 100% officially and legall is, a TAX so either the Oprama administration has to admit it was a TAX or say it is illegal whichever one floats their boat. As for Romney, the STATES have more power than the feds. It only mattered if it went against the State constitution. I have no problem if any state wants to institute Opramacare or Romneycare or even Tenncare (see we already had that). So you can't compare Romneycare to Opramacare because state level is different than federal level. Huge difference.
But the tax imposed for not having insurance isn't the biggest cost. Its the other hidden taxes and costs, like the new tax on your healthcare. Yep you guessed it now that will be taxed. Also there is a new tax on your insurance plan, yep you have to pay a tax on something you hopefully don't even use. It's a tax on your insurance.
It goes on and on and on. It is by far the largest tax increase in American history.
