don't know how this got btt!
I guess I am a city slicker!
However, I split my time between the ultimate city and the ultimate country. I spend half the week in a 1 br second story apartment in Brooklyn, NY with husband and one redbone, half in the Catskill mountains bordering the Catskill forest preserve a mile and a half from a town pop. 280 with two churches, a post office, and a gas station. I keep my hound fenced in when in the country so he doesn't go bear hunting at will, and stays out of my nearest neighbor's leghold traps. In the country, we live in a one-room log cabin with a woodstove for heat.
I have never had trouble over the hound in the city. He is pretty quiet indoors, and charms the socks off city slickers when I tie him outside stores while I run errands. The NYC schools use Where the Red Fern Grows, so a lot of kids who have never seen a live hound get very excited about meeting him. He gets walked around 5 miles a day in the city, on leash or in a fenced dog run with other dogs, so he meets a lot of people and other dogs. Most city folk think he's the most beautiful dog they've ever seen. A fair number of people who have migrated from the country stop to reminisce about hounds they knew in their youth. Every once in awhile he opens on an alley cat and everyone gets an enormous kick ot of the extravagant bawl!
A couple days ago, a Con Ed guy came half up out of a manhole to pet my hound. When he came out, the hound plunged his head in the "den" and bawled a big greeting, much to the surprise of the other guys still down there!
