Nick, nick, nick, you should know the ignorance of the Walker would over ride the briains of the bird dog. Heck it might pull the Walkers intelligence up to the level of one of the dumber Black and Tans though, so you might be on to somethin.

Before you blow a vein I'm just jokin.

Found what I have always accused one of the lines I like of having in their background.

A Gordon Setter, here is a picture of a pup in a show. The hair gets longer on them, but that pups hair pattern looks awfully fimiliar to some of our "rough haired" black and tans pattern of length and wave don't it? LOL

Rip, did that bitch throw some pups that had rear dewclaws? Rear dewclaws would be an indication of rotty and that pup looks like one to me. Gordon Setter maybe.

That picture is of a Gordon Setter pup in a show somewhere. It's not mine, I got it off somebody's website.

Yes, the lines I am talking about do throw some rear dew claws at times, and their ugly pups are erily fimiliar to the pup in the above picture. But the one that is worse about throwing the dew claws is not the one I most think has the Gordon Setter in it.

What I am saying, I believe one if not both of the lines that I like the most have a Gordon in their background, and maybe other things as well LOL.

This may be where the lay up ability from my old Sandy bitch came from is what I was meaning, if indeed lay up ability isn't a hound trait. I'm convinced of the Gordon in one line moreso than the other, though both of them throw "rough haired dogs" from time to time, I think one line is much more intelligent and more like the Gordy.

I don't care myself, I liked that dose of brains and lay up ability, it made it easier to over look her faults.

O.K.Guys, let me give you a recount of a hunt where my recently deceased dog, "JABO" did his "THING". Also you can call either of these guys who were on this particular hunt. Jabo was pretty consistent in treeing "layups and could also work a cold track with the best of them.

Danny Smith (615)382-0831, Randy Wilson (615)384)5190 and myself were hunting a section with small patches of swamp ground. 2 dogs(one was JABO) went into the woods and started to "locate" with head in the air. They were circling the area, head in air and locating. JABO moved all the way thru the small patch, head in air "locating". He moved out and into a small pasture, still "locating" then into another small patch, located a couple of times and fell treed under a COON.

This was on a warm winter nite with a slight breeze moving from the direction of the coon. This still seems unbeleivable and I relate this story MANY times a year. Can furnish names of MANY guys that have seen JABO tree "layups".

One night a friend and his son and myself were moving thru the woods. I released JABO and he took an immediate right turn, went about 20 yards(head in air) and fell treed. I said "come here stupid" and the young guy said 'Mr. Grubbs, here sets a coon. Layup dogs are so rare that most people have never seen one.

I am now hunting a younger full brother to JABO. He has treed a few coon w/o ever opening on track but I have not yet determined if he's treeing "layups" or just "still mouthing" a few. Time will tell. He's usually very open on track.

Justin we don't live that far apart. What 3 dogs are on your Great List? Thanks, Trott.

Told you all before about NtChCh Hamiltons Blue Boy Ten and his pups ability to tree layups. All 3 of his owners will tell you that Ten wasent the best track dog. It was his layup ability that made him. I have owned 6 pups from 5 different females, everyone of they were layup specialists. Some were top track dogs and some never ran a track there whole lives. There was no connection between the two, except the ones who didnt run tracks spent all night crisscrossing the wind looking for coon. I treed as many with one kind as the other. I have watched these dogs in pecan groves, I have seen them wind a coon from over a city block away. They would locate, run to the tree, and blow the top out of it. I have found though that a true layup dog, rather it can run a track or not, is more accurate then one who could not. I once saw my Pride dog wind a tree on the way back to the truck. It was a den tree and wasent hard to climb, so i did. When I looked in the hole there lay a coon. I know that coon hadent been out for at least 10 minutes couse I had my light on it as I walked up. He was the best layup dog that could also run track, and he winded the coons scent on the limb, or coming out of the hole. None of these dogs needed anymore hussle either. I have walked miles to all of them. I garentee you they werent lazy. It did seem like the smarter ones were the ones that didn't track though. I will tell you one thing, a true layup dog will tree you a sack full of coons, or spank you in the nighthunts.

Larry, those kind do exist but are rare, but ask your self if you think most dogs could smell that 10 minute old scent on a stinking dentree that a coon had been peeing around for months, I can smell those kind myself and I don't have much nose at all.

I have never seen a coon toilet closer than 50 feet from its den. If it is so easy to do then why dont you dogs do it? I have also saw them wind from outside an old barn and went inside and shot coon from the rafters. I never ment this kind was commen. They arent. But you can breed for it, Ten proved that.

Larry I was just joking with you, I had one out of Ten and he could wind one a couple hundred yards, but he wasn't much on tracking, layups was his only lick other than being a real hard treedog.

Justin Smith has the cat got your tounge? Can you show your dogs in the woods? Or are you scrapping trying to find one to borrow? You been called out. Prove yourself. We hear you talking all this talk can you prove it? I have four volunteers that live within 50 miles of you said that they would be glad to go hunting. You game?

The no tracking layup kind might fill the back of the pickup with coons, but I personally don't enjoy hunting them.

I love to hear a dog run and tree a coon. I like that layup ability well enough, as long as they can still run the hair off a coon.

To me, that is a true hound trait, and what I most enjoy.

I hunted some pups out of Ten also, and didn't like any of them much.

Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.
