Told you all before about NtChCh Hamiltons Blue Boy Ten and his pups ability to tree layups. All 3 of his owners will tell you that Ten wasent the best track dog. It was his layup ability that made him. I have owned 6 pups from 5 different females, everyone of they were layup specialists. Some were top track dogs and some never ran a track there whole lives. There was no connection between the two, except the ones who didnt run tracks spent all night crisscrossing the wind looking for coon. I treed as many with one kind as the other. I have watched these dogs in pecan groves, I have seen them wind a coon from over a city block away. They would locate, run to the tree, and blow the top out of it. I have found though that a true layup dog, rather it can run a track or not, is more accurate then one who could not. I once saw my Pride dog wind a tree on the way back to the truck. It was a den tree and wasent hard to climb, so i did. When I looked in the hole there lay a coon. I know that coon hadent been out for at least 10 minutes couse I had my light on it as I walked up. He was the best layup dog that could also run track, and he winded the coons scent on the limb, or coming out of the hole. None of these dogs needed anymore hussle either. I have walked miles to all of them. I garentee you they werent lazy. It did seem like the smarter ones were the ones that didn't track though. I will tell you one thing, a true layup dog will tree you a sack full of coons, or spank you in the nighthunts.
