You are in line at the store when the guy in front of you pulls out a gun and shoots the cashier. Should you be convicted because you were there?
COMMON SENSE and the rules should override your desire to eliminate the competition.

Why yes, I do like to argue but that's beside the point LOL.

I never mean any harm or offense in these debates. I learn alot in them and I enjoy the rules discussions.

The point is yes a dog in the area according to the rules DOES have to be leashed because the rules say ALL dogs at the tree must be leashed. Nobody has a choice in that. You can't wait and see what the dog does. You just have to leash him up if they are at the tree.

By the same token, the dog can be at the tree, not treeing and therefore it isn't scratched because being at the tree is not running, molesting or treeing off game. It just so happens to be at the tree and the handler nor judge has the option to just see what he will do. The dog must be leashed. Just because you put the leash on him at the tree doesn't mean the dog is scratched.

That is what the origional post describes, the dog didn't tree, just happened to come through that area. Didn't open or anything (at least that's his side of the story and that's all we can debate is the side that is posted).

All anyone has been saying is that the dog does have to do something, he has to perform some kind of act, to show that he is indeed running, molesting or treeing off game. You can't just scratch him cause he happens to be at the tree and then by rule had to be leashed at that tree.

For what it's worth and how it was reported to me today via the MOH, the dog did not ever bark, nor was it declared struck.

Thanks to Rip for the correct response and explaining in further detail.

Good ? I think it now becomes a matter of the judges opinion on weather the dog worked the track that ended at this tree, If he feels that this dog trailed to the possum tree he has a case for a scratch.

No I don't know it. Rip said it had to tree and I've just always figured if it was handled at tree it was scored at tree or don't handle it to start with. So why don't you enlighten me Mr. Advisor!!!

There is no rule to minus the strike points (if the dog had been struck). You would have to circle the strike points.

I know its not a scratchable in the senerio presented. I have a question though. A dog can be scratched for running off game, and a dog can be minused for quiting his track. So, if he is struck he was running off game or quit his tracking thus deserves minus????

We are almost talking about the exact same thing to where I quit with the comp hunts 5 years ago. I would have friends over to pleasure hunt that were Comp hunters. They would carry a stop watch and play/makebelieve the whole time we were hunting. Turned out to be a two dog cast at a comp hunt and I was asked to guide and mine made the third dog. OK. My buddy was the judge. I said, as he well knew , My dog may meet me off the tree. They treed and called treed. We went in and mine did not meet me. she was cutting about 125 BPM. He said "handle your dogs" I stepped forward and she made two jumps at me, dug her feet in my chest and bounced back on the tree. He said Minus that dog for putting her head down and going back on track in about 2 seconds. I'm just a coon hunter that used to know the rules but I don't know them new rules good enough now. So to heck with it. I don't comp hunt and he no longer trains his dogs with me. Even Steven is what I figure.
