I should off had another one this morning. Gobbling his fool head off. I was getting in position. Had to cross a big holler to get on his ground. Meanwhile other hunter has heard us carrying on. Public land and of course. He walks straight to turkey and runs it off lol. Idiot!!!

I had a great opening morning. Too good. My season only lasted 30 minutes now I'm done.

Got to where I wanted to be a little late at 6:20 and this bird was already gobbling on his own off the roost. Sat down and gave him some soft yelps. He was gobbling like crazy. It was probably 20 minutes until he hit the ground and he came pretty much on a string gobbling the whole way. Shot him at 20 yards with my new SBE II.

I got right up and got over there but couldn't see him or hear him flapping. Then I saw where he had rolled back off the ditch bank into a ditch filled with water. He was muddy and soaking wet. Not a good combination for field photos. A nice heavy 10.5 " beard and 3/4 spurs. Will try to get my nephew a bird now.

My nephew came up yesterday at 4:30.
It was a little after 5 before we could get started.
Couldn't find a tom to get after till 7:45. There were 2 toms strutting in the field.
We sat and watched them for a few minutes and I told Joel that I was pretty sure we could call them in the next morning.
Then , a hen stepped out of the woods. I figured , " No problem , it can still work." Then , another one stepped out and I figured I was done. I told Joel we could still try , but I wasn't sure if I could pull them away from 2 hens.
5:45 this morning , we were set-up and ready.
About 5:55 , they started gobbling.
They hit the ground about 6:15 , so I started talking to them. It seemed like hours , but in a few minutes , they were in the field. They both seen the decoys and went into strut and started our way. They were struttin' , spittin' and drummin' , the whole way in. (about 100 yards)
When they finally got close enough , 30 yards , I told Joel to take him when he was ready.
He started moving the gun into position. By the time he got ready , the birds were at 10 yards. BANG ! He , missed ! :yikes:
They started to turn and run , BANG ! This time , the bird folds.
He's down and out st 6:30 !

Nephew Joel and his first turkey......
9 3/4" beard , 1" spurs , 21 lb's.

Moved half way closer. Give him a cackle and some excited yelps. Here he comes wide open. I was ready this time 10.5" Beard... 1 3/8" spurs...

one of the best hunts ever

This year in southern indiana the hens are already sitting on eggs. We figured it would be tough...and it is compared to normal.
But last Thursday morning, with my buddy doing the calling, we had two fly down from from about 200 yards away to the east. These two birds went south well south, then west until they were directly south of us, gobbling thier heads off. At that point they were 100 yards from me, across a golden rod field. They started toward us, but I could not see them, just kept hearing them gobble. Finally I saw a head peaking up above the 'rod. on they came. I raised my single shot 10 gauge, pulled the hammer back, and they stopped! Looking right at me sitting just beyond the decoys. So there i was, caught between grass and hay. Just as my arms were thinking too heck with this, they came closer.
I let the biggest of the two have it at 55 yards...dropped him like a sack of taters.
9 3/4 beard, 21 lbs, 1 inche spurs.

Great hunt!

Got this big guy yesterday! He had two beards! Birds have played it tough this year, but this one came in without much of a hitch.

I started out mouth calling to this one, but he wouldn't answer, so I switched to my trusty Alumi-Witch and within minutes the gobbling started closing in on us. He came in with another bird and they hung up for a few minutes in some tall grass. Finally, this one came out enough for me to see a beard and I dropped him. Didn't know at the time that he had two beards, then when my dad and I walked out to him my dad said "He's got a double beard!". I thought he was kidding, but no!

5/14/12
1st Beard: 10 1/2"
2nd Beard: 7"
Spurs: 1 1/8th Each

Son's First Archery Turkey

My son Jayson has shot some extremely nice birds. Last year, he said he wanted to use his bow. Well, long story short, no birds came within range.

I had told him that a jake for his first bow kill would still be a trophy. We have been hunting here the last two weeks. It has been very unusual this year. One spot has no mature birds. There is a gang of 3 jakes that are tending the hens. This week we tried another farm. I saw 4 mature birds as I roosted them last night. This morning they flew down at 5:55 am. At 7:00 am 2 jakes from the north came down, and i will be darned if they didn't gang up on the mature bird and leave with the hens. Two hours later here comes 1 hen and the two jakes back. The jakes would not come in, but the hen did and tried to whip one of the decoys. That was all it took the two jakes started into the decoys. Jayson let the arrow fly when they hit about the 18 yard mark. His arrow was true, and the turkey started to flop right there.

It has been a long two years, but Jayson stuck to his ... bow ... and he finally got ihs first archery turkey.
